$700 and up

The latest Acer thin-and-light notebook is the Aspire Timeline. It comes in three flavors: a 1.6 kg (3.5 lb.) 13.3” compact, a 2.0 kg (4.4 lb.) 14” mid-size, and a 2.4 kg (5.3 lb.) 15.6” full-size version. All are eminently portable and highly functional, with a brushed aluminum finish that is light and also good looking and nearly smudge-proof. The design includes built-in, ultra-modern laminar wall jet cooling technology and well-thought-out gestural touchpad controls.

Timelines come packed with features and power. Each works with either a Core 2 Duo SU9400 or a Core 2 Solo SU3500 and an Intel Mobile GS45 Express chipset with 4 or 8 GB RAM. Hard disks up to 500 GB are available (320 GB standard) and 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless may be supplemented with WiMAX. The standard operating system is Vista Home Premium, while the 14” and 15.6” units include an optical drive. There’s even a 5-in-1 memory card reader built in and plenty of ports.

With a notebook so light, slick, and capable, the only question is: Does Mom get to use it herself or must she fight for it?

From the slotradio.org website:

"Much like radio, these songs are played in sequence and cannot be rewound or rearranged, yet in slotRadio™, individual songs can be skipped as often as you want."

So you buy mom 1000 songs, she hears one she likes, and has to skip the other 999 to hear it again? What is sandisk thinking? Why not just get mom a real mp3 player, or perhaps a FM radio?

There had to be a catch: After all, how else would a record company allow 1000 songs to be sold for $40? That's why I wrote that it reminded me a lot of the Internet Radio model (Pandora, etc.).

My girlfriend is planning on getting her mother a netbook, probably the MSI Wind. It's sort of a cheaper alternative to the Aspire Timeline.

I'm sure netbooks are going to be extremely popular this year for Mothers Day. I'm not aware of any models that have come out in the last month, which is why I didn't include any (almost everything in this gift guide is very new).

Pretty sure my kitty would pee in that grass charging station. :(
