So it's Black Friday and you've just snagged yourself a shiny, new Android smartphone or tablet. Looking for apps to install on your new device? Look no further! Even if you don't have the budget to spring for paid applications, there are a host of great, free apps on the market that can add a lot of functionality to your Android device. Compiled here is a list of 30 free Android apps for the new user.

Note: We chose not to include apps that require rooting your device. While rooting opens up a whole new world of functionality, it can also "brick" your new toy or void your warranty, something that a new user might not want to experiment with immediately. Still, if you want to give it a shot, here's an article on rooting your phone and a list of handy apps for rooted devices.

    What is an Android App? I take it, that it is not an Ipad App. But I'm mystified by this description. As an artist, I wish to purchase a drawing/painting app, and I'm totally confused the "Android" factor. I'd so appreciate an explanation.
