My $40 Targus laptop carry bag is fantastic with lots of pouches and extra zipper closed slots. It even looks sleek and smart. I don't get the whole $400+ bag for carrying a brick that vibrates when they `check their email.' Get a smart phone...

Well, the guide here reads like the Sunday Fashion supplement in the NY Times. Interesting, but not really practical.
What would be nice to have in a Tom's guide is:
1. How heavy is the case?
2. How well does the shoulder strap work (comfort)?
3. How well does it protect the laptop? (drops, side impact, etc.)
4. What size laptops (12, 14, 15, 15.4, 16, 17, ...) fit?
Laptop Mag does some reviews, with a bit more practical information, but this is crying out for something more in-depth, so prospective buyers can really compare. Not that style is not a factor, but that's more a personal choice thing.
I really question the idea that a $2-300 and up laptop bag or case has "better function." The only one that seemed to offer additional functionality at that price was the solar charger bag.

Good idea! We're looking into doing thorough reviews of laptop bags here at Tom's Guide. Obviously, this article was not a review--we simply wanted to show the breadth and depth of what is available on the market for style-oriented laptop owners.

It would also be good to have info and pics on the interior of the bag. One of my main gripes for most bags is that the pockets allow everything to slide toward the bottom of the bag so that all the do-dads are bunched up in a thick mass. It is much better to have two sets of half height pockets so that some items can be kept in the top pockets (near the handle when carrying) and other things can be kept in the lower pockets.
I'll stick with my $30 black nylon Wal Mart special thank you. It is built solid,has lots of storage space,lots of strong straps and padding. The best part is the money helped a single mom have a job and stay off welfare too.If I look too ritzy in this day and age I'll not be getting a raise either.

if i wanted to read a product ad i would read a mag that caters for it, if you're going go do a gossip piece latest trends atleast do a review on it instead of printing the marketing crap you from the companies [r firm..
To me, if the bag weighs more than the actual content, it is not really worth it. It is just adding dead weight. Good padding should not be heavy at all.
Recently, a kangaroo hoped in front of a bus load of nuns and caused all of their deaths, so it arrived in my domain last week. I have been using hoppy's pouch to carry all my equipment. I just put a leash on him. All the demons love it! It is soooo cute and adorable.
