Cyber-Crooks Taking Advantage of iPad Frenzy

Hackers are loading up fake websites with scareware amidst the iPad frenzy, reeling in the curious with fake information.

Wednesday seemed like The Day The Internet Stood Still... or at least, it did for those who sat on edge as Steve Jobs caressed his new iPad on stage. Unfortunately, web surfers wanting more juicy information than what Apple's front man provided have found themselves in a world of financial hurt.

According to various computer security firms such as Trend Micro and Symantec, cyber-crooks have thrown up “booby-trapped” websites with fake information about the new Apple iPad tablet. The websites are loaded with query terms that lure in surfers with the fake bait... and then pounce on the unsuspecting victims with “scareware.” Believing that they are infected, Internet users cough up money for the supposed fix.

"Sadly, this is just the kind of opportunity fraudsters like to exploit by poisoning search terms," Symantec security expert Candid Wueest told AFP on Friday. "We can also expect to see iPad-related spam and phishing attacks hitting consumers hard over the coming weeks. We'd advise the curious to be on their guard."

Ivan Macalintal of Trend Micro said that the scareware scam began on Wednesday. However this latest stunt isn't anything new--hackers normally take events and use them to exploit the curious. Recent attempts took place after the earthquake in Haiti, and immediately after the death of Michael Jackson.

Nintendo is expected to display the new Zelda game along with Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Andriasang reports that Nintendo's Satoru Iwata released a corporate snapshot regarding the game plan for 2010. According to the report, the upcoming Zelda game--currently under tight wraps--will finally make an appearance at E3 2010. Nintendo also plans to show Super Mario Galaxy 2 at the event as well as the mysterious Wii Vitality Sensor.

This year will also see a few major RPG releases for the Wii console, with The Last Story—a joint effort by both Nintendo and Mistwalker—set to provide a new, unique RPG experience. The RPG called Monado, developed by Monolith Soft, has been renamed to Xenoblade, and will hit store shelves this Spring.

Also due to hit stores this Spring/Summer is the new installment of the Metroid series, Metroid: Other M. The game is currently in development by Team Ninja, the studio behind the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden series; Metroid's original creator, Yoshio Sakamoto, also has a hand in its development. Nintendo launched the official teaser website earlier today which can be accessed here.

For all the closet Nintendo DS fans, Iwata hasn't left you out in the cold. A new installment to the Golden Sun series is expected to ship this year. If that wasn't enough RPG goodness to keep you busy, Gamefreak is currently working on a new Pokemon game, the first main release since Diamond and Pearl back in 2006. The new game will feature a new land and a new game mechanic.

Nintendo's Satoru Iwata: iPad Has "No Surprises"

Satoru Iwata was unimpressed with Apple's new iPad.

Nintendo's Satoru Iwata on Friday dismissed Apple's newly-unveiled iPad tablet, saying that the device doesn't offer any new surprises. In fact, he said it looked more like a big iPod Touch, leaving him virtually unimpressed. His view echos many verbal impressions made by critics and Apple loyalists alike since its big reveal back on Wednesday.

"There were no surprises for me," he admitted.

He also shared the same lackluster enthusiasm towards the use of 3D in gaming. "I have doubts whether people will be wearing glasses to play games at home,” he told the Press Association. "How is that going to look to other people?"

Although Iwata welcomes 3D movies such as James Cameron's Avatar, he doesn't expect 3D gaming to really catch on.

In the same briefing, Iwata also denied rumors about the company working on a DS system with built-in motion sensing technology. He also denied rumors about Nintendo working on a new Wii that will sport HD graphics. "I question whether those features would be enough to get people to buy new machines," he said of the DS.

Iwata did admit that Nintendo engineers are currently working on new consoles, however he did not provide any additional details. Iwata also did not specify if he would or would not purchase the Apple iPad, as it would make an excellent high-dollar drink tray as shown here by Pee-Wee Herman.

It's a whole new generation.

As shocking as this may be, this should surprise few as the prevalence of interconnected gadgets increases. A 14-year-old boy from Lacey, WA has been arrested by police after he sent a naked picture of his 13-year-old ex-girlfriend to his fellow students at ChinookMiddle School.

Authorities say that the picture made it to dozens of students in at least three different schools and those who helped spread the image could face child pornography charges. If the teens are convicted, they could face up to a month in detention and be forced to register as sex offenders.

"They did this with intention to harm her," the victim's mother, Toni, told KIRO-TV.

"She did something out of trust, I suppose, wanting to be accepted, loved. It was a mistake," said Toni.

Mitsubishi's 149-inch OLED TV @ ISE 2010

Mitsubishi has tightened its cool modular OLED technology, and will show a new prototype at ISE 2010 next week.

Next week at the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2010 event in Amsterdam, Mitsubishi Electric plans to showcase a prototype OLED screen measuring 149-inches (6.2m²). The technology actually made its debut back in October 2009 during the CEATEC show in Japan--Samsung claimed that its scalable OLED screen technology was the first of its kind.

As we reported in October, the overall screen consists of a grid containing smaller, edge-less OLED modules. This “modular” approach enables Mitsubishi the ability to create seamless screens consisting of any size or shape—the display could even feature curves. In essence, these little OLED modules create "pixels," and could require hundreds to comprise an entire screen. However, the visuals are bright and crisp even when viewed up close, and the grid is undetectable.

According to TechWatch, the display that will be shown at ISE 2010 will actually measure 1920mm x 3264mm in size. The display will also sport a resolution of 1088 x 640 at 3mm pixel pitch, and feature a light output of 1500cd/m². Unlike the 155-inch version shown at CEATEC (which consisted of 10mm x 10mm squares), this prototype will be more suited for indoor applications in “relatively brightly-lit” areas.

$10,000 Gun Needs Matching Wristwatch to Fire

Wired is checking out the tech down at the Shooting Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show in Las Vegas. One of the more interesting finds is a high-tech gun from German company Armatix.

You see it all the time in movies; someone's gun is wrestled out of their hands and one of their own bullets ends up in their leg. Worried that this might happen to you? Well, worry no more because Armatix aims to please.

At SHOT the company showed off .22cal that requires a matching wristwatch before it will work. Wired reports that the watch sends a wireless arming signal to the gun. If the gun is picking up a signal from the watch, an LED on the back lights up green. If there's no watch signal, a red warning light appears.

Now already, we can see a little bit of a problem; if it's just a wireless signal, couldn't somebody else fire your gun if they got close enough to you?

The €7,000 pistol is shipping this spring.

Ex-Broadcom CEO Cleared of Selling Drugs

Former Broadcom CEO, Henry T. Nicholas, has been cleared of drug charges.

Drug distribution charges against Henry T. Nicholas, co-founder of Broadcom have been dropped. The news comes after insider-trading charges against Nicholas were dropped in December 2009.

The Business Insider cites U.S. District Judge Cormac J. Carney as saying:

"From the evidence ... as well as what's been attained from the pretrial services, it does seem that you had a serious drug problem...You paid dearly for that. You lost your marriage, you lost your job, your reputation has been tarnished, but from what I gather you've been clean and sober for two years and I commend you for that."

According to TBI, Nicholas was accused of giving Broadcom clients drugs and throwing extravagant drug-fueled parties. He is also said to have built a "sex lair" in the basement of his home. A builder working on the basement tried to extort $9 million out of the once very successful entrepreneur by threatening to release incriminating evidence involving drugs and prostitutes.

A 17-year-old Niagara County girl is serving six months in jail for a drunk driving offense.

The Buffalo News reports that Ashley M. Sullivan was Wednesday sentenced to six months in jail and five years probation for crashing her car while drunk and killing her boyfriend.

Sullivan went to Florida a month after the crash and a photo posted to her Facebook page is captioned, "Me drunk in Florida." The judge said the reason for her jail sentence was because she was "troubled" by the girl's conduct since the crash.

Judge Matthew J. Murphy III also refused to grant Sullivan youthful offender status for the same reason, stating, 'I don't feel she has earned it." According to the Buffalo News, when Sullivan's defense attorney said, "This young woman is remorseful," one of the two dozen people gathered in the courtroom laughed.

Sullivan's license was revoked and the girl was told when she was released from prison, she would be electronic home monitoring for a year.

Google's Nexus One is barely cold and already we're planning the next iteration. Word on the street is Motorola will be designing the next Nexus device.

This isn't the first time we've heard the words "Google phone" and "Motorola" in the same sentence. Tech Radar point out that, at the Nexus One launch, the company had lips flapping when it said the device was just the first in a line of Google smartphones from an array of different manufacturers including HTC, Motorola and others. HTC got checked off the list with the launch of the Nexus One and now the Street reports that Motorola is could be working on the next one.

The Street cites co-CEO Sanjay Jha who outlined the company's 2010 plans in a conference call with analysts on Thursday. Jha detailed that 20 smartphones are on the bill for this year, including "one direct to consumer device with Google."

Firefox Mobile Headed for Android OS?

The first beta of Firefox Mobile may appear on the Android Market next month.

Looks as though users with Android-powered phones may see the first beta of Mobile Firefox (Fennec) sometime in February. The German Mozilla Community Website was the first to reveal the news, reporting that most of the work on the browser has been completed.

Development of the browser originally began back in December 2009. Although the Firefox Mobile team has successfully launched the application on an Android-based phone, currently it's not able to surf the Internet. There's no indication on what still needs to be addressed, or it the team is actually on track for a February beta release.

Currently Firefox Mobile is available on Maemo-based devices, and also appears as an alpha for Windows Mobile smartphones. Recently Jay Sullivan, VP Mobile at Mozilla, showed a demonstration of Firefox Mobile during a Labs Night meeting held earlier this week.

If all goes well, Firefox Mobile should show up on the Android Market within the next few weeks.
