Next Generation iPhone Spotted by Developers

It's iPhone 3,1! It could be iPhone 4G!

Apple's naming system for the iPhone in its software has been fairly straight forward. The first 2G iPhone was 1,1 and the 3G was 1,2, signifying feature set upgrade with a similar class-CPU. The iPhone 3GS got bumped to 2,1 thanks to a massive CPU upgrade.

While it'd be logical to expect a 2,2 iPhone coming in the next refresh next summer, certain application developers who log usage statistics have found that an iPhone identifying itself as version 3,1 has been running some of today's apps.

iPhone developer Pandav told MacRumors that its iBART public transportation for San Francisco guide is reporting usage from an iPhone 3,1.

With stiff competition coming in from Palm and Android-based phones, such as Motorola's Droid, Apple may choose to skip the small upgrade entirely and roll out a significant upgrade for its fourth iPhone model.

9to5Mac postulates that this may be the first we'll see of Apple's purchase of PA Semi from two years ago. Steve Jobs previously said with regards to the then-recent acquisition, "PA Semi is going to do system-on-chips for iPhones and iPods."

Black Friday Brawls: Plenty Fought, No One Died

Nothing like one-day-only deals to make people foam at the mouth and act like they're completely nuts.

Black Friday is traditionally pretty crazy. Last year a Walmart employee was killed by a stampede of shoppers and while there were no major casualties this year, there were plenty of classy confrontations including women having spitting contests and brawls at Walmart.

Brawls broke out at two separate Walmart locations in California. The LA Times reports that police were called to the Upland branch because customers were "fighting inside." Shoppers were tearing into shrink-wrapped merchandise and refusing to form lines. Eventually police threw the 300 customers out into the parking lot and told them to get in line while Walmart employees emptied everyone's carts and put all merchandise back on shelves. Naturally, not everyone was pleased about this. Shoppers were reportedly yelling, banging on windows and trying to sneak into the store through the lawn and garden section. Things eventually calmed down and the police left once everyone was behaving like civilized human beings.

A little later on, a fight broke out at the Rancho Cucamonga Walmart. A spokesperson for the San Bernardino County sheriff’s department said deputies were called with Walmart employees claiming, “subjects near the electronics area were fighting." Fortunately, the drama had played out by the time the deputies arrived.

The examiner.com reports that 14 police units were dispatched when a fight broke outside the Jantzen Beach Toys R Us, near Portland, Oregon. Two women began swearing and spitting at each other; and about 100 people who were lined up in the dark started plowing into each other in an effort to get ahead. The ruckus was soon brought under control.

Did you see any notable bad behavior while out shopping this year? Let us know in the comments below!

Couple Gets Married at Best Buy on Black Friday

Does this mean they'll celebrate their anniversary every single Black Friday?

Bargain-hunting can get a little crazy. Waiting in line isn't just time consuming, it's can also be cold, boring and exhausting. Sometimes, the friends you make standing around outside the store can help make things a little more pleasant. And who knows, maybe you'll meet your future wife or husband. Having met online a few days earlier, Jennifer and Edward Burbo met up on Black Friday '07 to stand in line together.

This year, the two decided to save money on a big wedding and tied the knot while waiting in line at their local Best Buy. Jennifer and Edward Burbo stood in line outside Best Buy for two whole days to be sure they were first in line and on Black Friday, the couple had the big wedding they'd dreamed of as cameras filmed the two saying, "I do."

Shoppers in the line signed the guest book and Jennifer made sure she was wearing something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. Aside from getting hitched, the Burbos were waiting to snag some deals on, 'gaming systems and cellular phones' for their four children.

Office 2010 Ships in 2010, Beta Now

Office 2010 is expected to go RTM in June 2010, however until then, Microsoft has released a fully-featured beta of Professional Plus.

Neowin reports that Microsoft will ship its highly anticipated Office 2010 suite (RTM) in June 2010. It also regurgitates information that was made public many months ago: that there will be six versions including a free offering with limited functionality and built-in advertisements. Office 2010 will also appear as a full install, or as an upgrade to current Office 2007 consumers.

Currently Microsoft has not coughed up pricing plans for the full-blown or upgrade offerings, however the products will work on Windows XP (x86 only), Vista (x86, x64), and Windows 7 (x86, x64) when they ship this summer. And despite all the legal hoopla taking place over the summer, Word will still be available in Microsoft's popular Office suite, sitting alongside Excel, Outlook, Publisher, and more applications.

For consumers who just can't until June 2010 to get a peek at Office 2010, Microsoft has launched the Professional Plus 2010 beta right here. According to Microsoft, there are ten applications available in the free suite: the usual suspects along with PowerPoint, OneNote, Communicator and more. To use the beta, Microsoft insists that consumers uninstall previous versions of Office.

To download the 685 MB Office 2010 beta, consumers must have a Microsoft Live account. We couldn't get Microsoft's Download Manager to work in Internet Explorer 8, but so far it's working just fine in Firefox. The download is taking forever and a day to initialize, so expect a long waiting period before enjoying the Ribbon-laden Office 2010 goodness.

Duke Nukem: D-Day Teased Not DNF

By Kevin Parrish, published on November 30, 2009 at 1:30 PM

A new Duke Nukem game is making an appearance on Facebook.

We just can't seem to get enough gossip when it comes to Duke Nukem. After all, the iconic hero has been around for over a decade, and like Michael Jackson, made such an immediate impression that he was the talk of the town for years. Unfortunately, like the King of Pop, Duke has seen his share of under-the-table jokes, most notably the Dukem Nukem Forever PC game and its seemingly infinite development.

After 3D Realms closed its doors and laid off the DNF development team in May 2009, hordes of screenshots and renders began to infiltrate our defenses thanks to ex-employees looking for work. Soon Duke Nukem Forever was back in the spotlight, reminding all of us who fell sleep waiting on the game that it's still kicking around somewhere on a hard drive like an alien embryo waiting to break through its host's chest cavity. Hopes of a final DNF product quickly came to an end when Take 2 took notice and went after George Broussard and Scott Miller.

Now Duke has resurfaced again, this time in a new teaser image on Facebook. Located here on this new Duke Nukem account, the "preview" image of D-Day features what looks like an armored-clad EDF soldier--possibly Duke although he wouldn't be that lame--firing what looks to be a chaingun cannon at the Cycloid Emperor in a highly-detailed stadium.

But don't get all liquored up and race across the rooftops yelling "Duke Nukem Forever is here! Duke Nukem Forever is here!!" Indeed, Duke Nukem Forever is locked away in a vault forever, assets and all, until the legal dispute is resolved. With that said, it's entirely possible this is a new Duke Nukem game using the old PlayStation 2 game title--one that never made it to the market. Or, it could be D-Day resurrected and revamped for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Stay tuned, and cross your fingers that this will be the non-Forever Duke Nukem FPS game for the PC we've been waiting for... well, for forever.

Droid Gets Porn App Marketplace

By Kevin Parrish, published on November 30, 2009 at 1:00 PM

There's a new Android Marketplace aimed to provide users with plenty of adult-oriented, XXX goodness.

One of the bright shiny toys on Santa's Christmas list this year is the Motorola Droid (*cough* Tuan *cough*). While Verizon is giving the middle finger to its Droid owners by denying any kind of "authorized" tethering feature, there's definitely one benefit to picking up the latest Droid smartphone: porn. How? According to a report from CNET, developer MiKandi (my candy, get it?) has launched a mobile app store that sells adult-only content.

Currently there isn't a web-based storefront for PC users, making the "service" a Droid-only feature. The company's website even states that, "due the adult content on the MiKandi App Store, you MUST BE OVER 18 YEARS OLD to download." The video, sporting its porn-ified goodness below, explains the entire service, claiming to provide content with ratings of "R," "NC-17," and "XXX."

"Up until now, adult apps were censored, edited, and rejected," the company said. "In other words, all the life sucked right out of them." The video seems to be speaking to content developers, throwing out features that could be used including GPS, Flash, Java, Motion Sensors (!), and more. Based on the information, it may be that MiKandi is shooting for platforms other than Google's Android operating system.

Current Droid users can visit the MiCandi website and download the MiCandi Market app that allows users to read adult-oriented news, play games, read up on the latest porn stars, socialize, and of course, get a bunch of visual goodness.

Perhaps Verizon should add the ability to download porn unrestricted to its "DROID DOES" campaign. Then again, we're talking about Verizon, the company that locks GPS from subscribers NOT using its VZNavigator software. There's a hint of censorship in the air... can you smell it?

App Developer Hires Hacker, Security Firms Pissed

By Kevin Parrish, published on November 30, 2009 at 12:40 PM
Source: Tom's Guide US | Keywords: , , , , | Themes: Software, Smartphones, 3GSM

What kind of developer hires a known hacker to code its apps? Apparently its Mogeneration.

A few weeks ago, iPhone hacker Ashley Towns appeared in the news after unleashing the Ikee worm and infected thousands of jailbroken iPhones. The worm, deemed as a "prank," changed the device's background wallpaper to that of Rick Astley, the 80's British school-janitor-turned-pop-star behind Top 40 hits "Never Gonna Give You Up," "Together Forever," and more.

Now Towns has resurfaced, only this time he hasn't infected unlocked iPhones with another 80s pop star. Apparently, someone took notice of Towns' "skills" and has offered the hacker a job. He made the announcement via his Twitter page, saying that he is now working as... hang on for this one... an iPhone application developer! Macworld verifies the report, revealing that Australian developer Mogeneration actually offered the paying position.

But the hiring has ruffled a few feathers, and understandably so. According to Macworld, many have spoken out in protest but remain anonymous save for security firm Sophos. "What disheartens me is that Towns has shown no regret for what he did," said Sophos' Graham Cluley. "He admitted specifically infecting 100 iPhones himself, letting his worm loose in the process. Now his utterly irresponsible behavior appears to have been rewarded."

He also added that there are plenty of aspiring coders qualified for the job that would have not acted "so stupidly." In fact, he says, pointing out the "series of blunders" in Towns' code, that there are probably better coders out there looking for work. Do these sound like fighting words? You bet, and perhaps consumers should shy away from anything developed and published by Mogeneration.

America Spends $595M Online on Black Friday

By Jane McEntegart, published on November 30, 2009 at 11:20 AM

My, my, weren't we busy last Friday?

ComScore has the numbers for this past Black Friday and while overall spending for the month of November saw a marginal increase compared to the same period last year, Black Friday spending increased significantly, up eleven percent from last year.

According to ComScore, American consumers managed to jack the annual Black Friday spendfest up to $595 million, an eleven percent increase on last year's Black Friday spending, which amounted to $534 million.

"The $595 million in online spending this Black Friday represents the second heaviest online spending day of the season-to-date and a double-digit increase from last year," said ComScore Chairman Gian Fulgoni.

Fulgoni goes on to suggest that while it's possible the acceleration in spending is down to retailers leveraging the likes of Facebook and Twitter, it could also mean that online spending for Cyber Monday could be even better than etailers anticipated.

ComScore also reviewed Black Friday deal sites where bargain-hunting shoppers like to research their Black Friday purchases. A study of several sites over the five days preceding Black Friday showed that while some deal sites saw a decline in traffic by up to -17 percent, some sites saw an increase of up to 113 percent.

Check out the rest of the numbers here.
