10. Kodak ESP 7

Scanner and Copier

Good quality. The scanned image is sharp but the flesh tones are less precise.
Scanner speed is fine. The initial preview takes less than 6 seconds. A full scan of a 300 dpi 4x6 print takes almost 13 seconds.

The copier takes 18 seconds for a black and white and more than 37 seconds for a color copy.

The argument for Kodak is still the same across all the models: economy for ink jets. This isn't enough for everyone, though. You still have to think about how speed and quality compare with the competition. This was already a problem on previous models. So, Kodak has updated its product: new design, new look, supposedly higher speeds. What about the quality?

After the ESP-5, it’s now over to the ESP-7. With the exception of the black case, we have a totally new looking machine, both in terms of aesthetics and functionality. There are two sections allowing the separation of 4x6 prints and A4s. The control panel has also been moved. It is now right at the front instead of on the side.

One real plus point: the panel also has new functions such as an Ethernet port and Wi-Fi.
The ESP-7 has undergone some major changes that move in the right direction. Some problems remain, however: the printer is extremely loud and the installation software takes a long time to load.

Office printing: good in black and white but unconvincing in color

Kodak claims 30 pages per minute (ppm). In black and white draft mode, we actually got 23 ppm which is pretty good. In standard mode, the results are less impressive. Black and white speed is 8.8 ppm, a very good score not mirrored by color performance which gives only 4.6 ppm.

When it comes to quality, a sensitive subject, draft mode is an appropriate name. Although readable, the blacks lack intensity and drops are visible. Black and white graphs are very good: tinted areas are nice and even and text is precise. Once again, results for color work is not so good; tints lack homogeneity and characters that appear on a color background are practically illegible.

Photo printing: sharp

Photos print quite fast: count about 50 seconds for a 4x6 color print. A4s take more time: a little over 2 minutes per page. Photo quality is good. Images are sharp and drops and/or lines are not very noticeable or even invisible. If you really want to be critical, you could say that a bit more contrast would give a more faithful reproduction and also look better on the eye.

Office color prints are pretty economical (only HP with its extra large cartridges gets close). Color photo prints also come in cheaper than the competition. Kodak is still only working on a mono-cartridge system: when one color is out you have to chuck the whole cartridge and waste ink. Try to recycle your cartridges as much as possible by taking them back to the shop.

We had a look inside one empty cartridge to see that there was still a lot of ink in there. Best not to leave these chemicals in the office trash.

Kodak ESP 7
PlusesMinuses
  • Ethernet port and Wi-Fi
  • Good ergonomics
  • Speed and quality for black and white office printing
  • Sharp photo prints
  • Cost per page at the very lowest for ink jet
  • Poor speed and quality for colour office printing
  • Lack of contrast in photos
  • Too expensive!

The ESP 7 is a notch above the ESP%

I've used Epson photo quality printers at home for years and have been very happy with the print quality and costs. My only issue, is that after a few years 3-5 they clog up and print unevenly. The good news is by then, the newer printers have much better quality and cost less.

if you guys at toms still have these machines i would love to find out if they still work after you leave them sitting for a month and a bit.

my biggest issue with all ink jets is they dry up on me.
i have been through both cheap and pricy ones and all die.

i have given up and turned to mono laser and for the rare occasion i need colour i go to the local copy shop.

the only think I can say is I'll NEVER buy an Epson printer. Good quality colors, yes, but SHIT ink design.

I just bought a MP620 and so far so good, great quality printing, photos are fantastic, but must use Canon paper for this and so much easier to set-up than and Brother MFC machine (what a nightmare!) had Epson before this and it crapped out after 2.5 years. Its so good to have a WIFI machine !!! At least in Auckland its so damp the jets will never dry out!

2/ prices? where are they?
3/ Is this easy to use as its simply easy on the front panel? or has the reviewer actually used it?
4/ I could go on and on, I can't make much sense out of whihc to go for, no conclusion, limited info, few facts, duplex?
terrible article, read elsewhere....
