WSJ: iPhone 6 to Have New Way of Charging

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Induction charging?

The Wall Street Journal's Yukari Iwatani Kane seems to have a special inside track when it comes to Apple information. It's notable, then, when a report comes out from the paper that talks about the manufacturing challenges of the next iPhone, and even the iPhone after that.

According to the Journal, the next iPhone will be similar to the iPhone 4, but will be thinner and lighter. It will also sport an 8 megapixel camera. Apple will also supposedly shift from its Infineon wireless chip to one made by Qualcomm, the latter company being the current supplier for the current Verizon-specific Apple products.

The Qualcomm chip used by Apple right now has the capability to handle both CDMA and GSM frequencies, leading to some speculation that the next iPhone will come in one hardware configuration for all networks.

There are also concerns that the next iPhone could be further pushed back from launch if Hon Hai Precision, also known as Foxconn, isn't able to improve its yields.

Foxconn chairman Terry Guo told the Journal that his company is facing challenges with Apple's touch-screen devices.

"The touch-screen devices are so thin. It's really difficult to install so many components into the iPhones and iPads," Gou said. "We hope to raise the yield rate and volume in the second half, which will help improve our gross margin."

Even further out is talk of the iPhone 6, which the Journal has heard from a source that it will be a major revamp of the design and that Apple is experimenting with new ways of charging the phone. Perhaps it will be a wireless charging method similar to the HP Palm Pre's Touchstone charger.

I like the idea of wireless charging

Wireless charging works if the chargers are cheap. We have 6 iDevices in our family (counting kids iPods) - everyone wants a turn on a few chargers. Plus more for traveling or the car.

Wireless charging is still inefficient. These chargers will burn through much more power to have the same charging time, or they will take forever to charge a device if same amount of power is used.

So true. It has been out for a while....Hell its almost the same as the way many electric toothbrushes charge...

It will be "revolutionary" because it will be an Apple exclusive device that will cost an "arm and a leg"!

Just a curious question because I don't know the answer. What other electronic products out there use wireless charging currently?

As long as there's a way to cable charge the device I think this would be great. Cables are still nice for securing the device. It's nice to have a something to break the fall of the device.

molo9000 :
Current chargers use about 5watts and an iPhone battery holds about 5watthours.Even tripling the power consumption would not have any significant impact on your electricity bill or the world's climate.Nobody said that "a new way of charging" means conventional induction charging. Some people suggest they might use "resonant inductive coupling", which would allow energy transfer over a distance of several meters.I don't see the point though. Nothing wrong with using a cable.

All the little things add up. How many iPhones are out there and how many will there be 4 or 5 years from now? All of those wirelessly charging devices would consume a lot of power together.

This is the same mentality as "its just a dollar, it won't break you", but when you add up all the dollars you spend because its "just a dollar" it ends up being quite a lot!

You can also bet that as soon as Apple does it, a thousand other companies will feel they have to do it.

IIRC Palm Pre had this kind of charger as an optional accessory

i read that Nicola Tesla once powered 200 lightbulbs over 40 km away wirelessly and almost finished his work of sending power from the US to England via thunderstorms and the ionosphere. Then again, he was Nicola Tesla. good luck with us catching up to him.

It's actually exactly like electric toothbrushes and some wireless razors have been charged for the last 2 decades.

Not surprised by this, one of the potential spec sheets for the PS4 being shopped to the cable industry has the PS4 with a charging mat built into the top, it would allow for recharging of the remote control, and controllers all at once, no reason it wouldn't also charge your cell phone if placed on it.

Stop being a hater. No one nowhere said anything about it being revolutionary.

I see this as a natural progression of apple with the iOS 5 suppose to be PC free, there's no need to connect to the computer anymore.

No need to connect = no need for a cable, except to charge. Now if they go wireless power then they can eliminate the connector port entirely.

This is really screw up jail breaking the device since now they will remove any access to the hardware, without having to open the device.

Apple charger will charge world wide where ever you are you wont be able to escape it. The power stations will also emit a brainwashing signal as well.

If the 5 isnt a radical change from the 4 I wont continue to buy it. The 4 may be my last stop. 8mp camera has been in devices since last year so I hope thats not one of thier major selling points for the 5. If it doesnt have 64gb, 1080p video and not dual core with at least a 4.2 inch screen they can keep it. There are way too many other nice phones out and coming out that will beat it.

wireless charging may seem cool but it uses multiple times more power and charges slower.

and some chargers do not turn off meaning when plugged in they are using their full power draw 100% of the time.

(not sure if the quality ones do that, but the addon ones tend to do that)

wireless charging is just not up to the task yet.

For some quality ones, (at least for chargers for wiimotes) will use magnets in the charger and/or the battery cover to turn the charger on and off (or at least in low power mode).

For example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUU4AsxaY6s

Would not surprise me if they do something close to this. but i agree, i dont think wireless charging is here just yet....

Where do these people get their information? Apple does not intentionally leak information about unreleased products to anyone. Ever. The only people at Apple that leak info about unreleased products are those that are about to get fired for something they weren't supposed to do in the first place.
