8. Step 3

Now I need to plug the USB drive into the desktop PC and unplug any existing internal hard drives in the PC, install my old notebook hard drive in the PC and make sure it sees the notebook hard drive as its own boot drive. Since my notebook drive is dying, I'm not actually going to boot the PC from it. Rather, I'll boot the Apricorn OS from the CD and clone the drive onto the new drive that is now plugged into a USB port on the desktop PC.

First I need to remove the screws and the caddy that secured the old drive in my notebook.

But before that I'll mark the drive bad so I don't confuse it with any other drives.

I am removing screws on one side ...

and the other

Here my wobbly notebook drive is ready to be installed in the PC.

First, locate your desktop hard drive and find the ribbon cable and if possible, a free Molex power connector.

Now move the cable from the desktop drive to the notebook drive and then plug the power connector in. The notebook drive is now the boot drive for the desktop.
