9. Dell U2412M Monitor

Attractively designed tech-goodies for the living room and the home office (or just about any other place in the house).

Dell U2412M Monitor

When it comes to computer displays, you’re usually looking for one of two things: speed and color accuracy. Speed is important for gaming, especially if you’re big into FPS titles like Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3, while color accuracy is the top priority for the graphic design and video editing crowds.

The U2412M from Dell caters to the latter, thanks to its IPS panel and rotating display. IPS panels aren’t as fast as the more popular (and cheaper) TN panels, but they do have better viewing angles and very precise color. This LED-backlit, 24-inch, 1920x1200 resolution display has much in the way of customization, with oodles of ports and a substantial OSD. Starting with ports, the U2412M has VGA, DisplayPort and DVI for video out (no HDMI, but you can always use a DVI to HDMI cable), as well as five USB 2.0 ports (one upstream, two downstream on the back, two downstream on the side). If you keep your tower tucked away under the desk, the included USB ports make connecting peripherals, smartphones and iPods that much easier.

The U2412M has plenty of options for coloring and other settings, too, including settings designed for reading text, watching movies, and playing games. The color temperature is also adjustable, giving you a wide range of customization in a relatively inexpensive ($350) package. The physical aspects of the U2412M are also fully customizable, thanks to the included height, tilt, swivel and pivot adjusting. Tilt and swivel are more common these days, but height and pivot are rare, and welcomed with open arms. Having a portrait-oriented display on the desk is great for reading code or viewing webpages, and the height adjustment means you can position the U2412M for optimal ergonomics.

It’s a bit more expensive than its TN panel-based 24-inch counterparts, but the U2412M is one of the best values in displays today, thanks to the LED backlight, more truthful to color IPS display, and its wealth of extra features.

Dysons are decent vacuums but they don't hold a candle to Kirbys.

The Kirby is more durable, generates more suction even on a nearly full bag, has a larger diameter hose, a much longer average lifespan (25 years), is less likely to clog and is made in the USA.

My Diamond Edition still runs and looks like it is brand new and gets used once a week. It is six years old.

Also those Dyson bladeless fans are false advertising. They are just hidden in the base and channel air. Instead of a large quiet blade it instead has to use a high RPM (noisy) fan to push the air through the small exhaust vents.

This is a horrible gift idea. With the small vents I would imagine they would get clogged often as well. Just think of what builds up on a normal fan blade or in your computer case in a thin vent.

As for noise. Think of computer case cooling. Would you want a 120mm CPU cooler at 2,000RPM or a 60mm CPU cooler at 10,000RPM.
