Two High-End Graphics Notebooks Compared : Introduction

1. Introduction

It’s no secret that notebook sales are responsible for the lion’s share of recent growth in the PC industry. The advantages of a mobile PC are obvious, and as prices get lower and lower, these useful tools become more and more attractive to the general public.

Of course, there are two notable segments of the PC buying public that are hesitant to move to a mobile computer: gamers and professional workstation users. In both cases, the reason is the same: they need more power than a typical notebook can offer. While notebooks have progressed leaps and bounds from their slow-as-molasses beginnings, let’s face it - they’re still not going to win any speed records compared to desktop models.

Or are they? Most notebooks are targeted at people who want to surf the ’net and edit documents, but that doesn’t mean that high-performance mobility isn’t available. Welcome to the realm of the desktop replacement, that special category of notebooks that boasts "anything a desktop can do, I can do too".

We’ve had the pleasure of spending some time with two desktop replacement notebooks with both striking similarities and differences: the Eurocom D900C Phantom and the M-Tech D901C.

A Common Hardware Platform

Both the Eurocom and M-Tech notebooks are created by the same 3rd party manufacturer. For this reason, they appear similar in many respects, so some of our readers have requested we have a look at these machines to see what sets them apart.
