Netbooks are perfect for so many scenarios, and it is hard to argue with their super-cheap prices. But for a graduate who needs to get a good look at his or her screen, a netbook’s 7"x11" display simply doesn’t cut it. Rather than spending $800 or more for a notebook with a 17" monitor (and tons of high-end components, to boot), why not consider a nettop PC? A nettop is just like a netbook in that it is cheap, lightweight, and small, except that it is a desktop PC with a real screen. Averatec’s All-In-One costs $550, although major retailers have been known to reduce it to $500.

Its components are minimalist: an AMD Athlon X2 1.5 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics, an 250 GB hard drive, four USB ports, one eSATA port, a card reader, and 802.11g WiFi. Just the bare basics, right? You might find these exact same specifications in a netbook, but this computer comes with a swiveling, adjustable, 18.4" monitor attached. The computer base itself is quite a bit smaller than one square foot. This means that this computer can squish down to size when space is needed.

Other useful features include a 1.3 megapixel Webcam, a mouse and keyboard that come with the nettop, and an internal DVD drive. This PC runs Vista Home Basic. If you like the Apple iMac, this machine makes a great alternative for graduates with basic computing needs and little space. The iMac starts at $1,200, so for less than half the price you can gift an Averatec All-in-One (pssst...It also comes in white).

No high-school school or middle school years have ended, and no quarter-system universities have finished the semester yet. Semester system universities held graduation, mostly, last week. I don't think it is too late to be thinking about graduation gifts at all.

Here are my thoughts.

On the AIO PC: It's nothing more than a laptop without a battery. Nothing can be upgraded. Consider getting a Laptop instead. On the plus side, it is stylish.

On the HP Printer (from personal experience): Every HP printer I've used have had horrible problems loading paper. Consider Lexmark or Canon.

On the Panasonic Camera: Nikon's Coolpix and Canon's Powershot can be found at similar prices and are (generally) better cameras.

I must admit though, the N10Jc looks pretty cool ;)

Hey Quantumrand,

Thanks for you advice. What if I asked for you to find me a computere under $500 with a tiny footprint (no tower) and a bigger than 17-inch screen. Would you be able to do that? That's where I think the cheapie AIOs come into play.

Better as a wrist support pad. I have 3 PC's and I can only use this one 1 of the them. Really? I have to buy 3 separate Replicas for my PC's? In this economy? No thanks

There is a multi-PC version of the Seagate Replica, we just didn't review it: http://shop.seagate.com/store/sgat [...] .125882200

All I know is that the best gift buy would be great if I wasn't worried about other luxuries such as food, clothing, & shelter.
