I'm upgrading my gaming rig and wanted to post my proposed build for comment/opinion. Here goes:

Gigabyte GA-8IGX MB
1 stick Corsair DDR333 CAS 2 RAM 512 Meg

or

Gigabyte GA-8IHXP MB
2 - 256 meg sticks Kingston 1066 non-ECC RDRAM

and

P4 2.26Ghz processor 533Mhz FSB
Visiontek Xtasy GeForce 4 Ti 4600 video card
Antec Tru power 430 watt power supply
Western Digital WD800JB 80 Gig Hard Drive w/ 8 meg cache (will be used for my OS's and programs)
Asus 52x CD rom
IBM deskstar 60 Gig hard drive (From my old system. Will be used only for data storage.)
LAN - will use on board LAN.
Audio - Creative SB live MP3 (from my old system)
I have plenty of fans and great case with a slide off side.

I may experiment with overclocking but it's not a priority. Stability would be a higher priortity.

I probably won't use the RAID.

As I said this will mostly be used for gaming. It will boot between XP Pro/W2K Pro/W2k Advanced server (I use server only for testing as part of my job.)

I would set up the IDE interfaces as follows:

Primary IDE master - WD800JB
Primary IDE slave - IBM deskstar
Secondary IDE master - CD-ROM

I will have another P3 800 machine networked to this one running W2K pro/W2K advanced server. It also has 2 hard drives. I back up my data weekly copying it from the data only drive on the first machine to the data only drive on this one. This has served as a great backup solution for me. Additionally I regularly image my drives using Drive Image and save a copy of these images to both of my data drives for redundancy. This has enabled me to get away with not using anti-virus software which I hate. I will also have my Plextor CD writer on this machine since I have a duplicate copy of my Data/MP3's on both machines.

Additionally I have DSL but most of my gaming is single player off line stuff like Diablo 2, Morrowind, Wolfenstein etc.

I pretty much would be buying everything from Googlegear so my component list comes from my research and what they have available.

Well that's it. Thanks for taking the time to read it and feel free to comment on anything and everything.

I have a few suggestions.

I would ditch the Antec 430 Watt and switch it for an Enermax 430 Watt Power Supply. I have had much better experiences with the Enermax PSU's. Also, you obviously want the top of the line Video Card. You should wait until next month and check out the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro. This card stomps on all of the Geforce cards. It performs even better with all the extras turned on. Or you could save alot of money when nVidia drops their prices.

If you want to go with DDR memory and overclocking is not a priority you should wait for the SiS 648 chipset to hit the shelves. The SiS 648 chipset supports DDR 400 and AGP 8X. PC-1066 is a little better then DDR 400 so you would not notice the differences unless you overclocked and then the RAMBUS would be the better choice. Asus and Soyo should be releasing their boards, the P4S-8X and the P4S-648 Dragon Ultra, later this month. Abit already has a 648 board called the SR7-8X. Intel will also be dropping prices on the 1st of Sept. The 2.26b and the 2.4b will both cost $193.00 USD.

Everything else is great. Nice job. You may want to check out newegg.com, they have very cheap prices and one of the best customer service records out there.

Thanks for the well thought out reply Big. I'm not much of a fan of trying new products that haven't been on the market a while. I like to see some reviews by this or other sites first as they really do shape my buying decision. I also stay away from the dreaded v 1.0 when it comes to software or drivers. Having said that, I might have answered my own question as to the MB and RAM decision. Seems the 850E chipset and 1066 RDRAM will still be among the fastest and already has a track record. Plus as you say the Kingston RDRAM and GA-8IHXP should let me overclock to stay up on things until its time to upgrade. I will look at the Enermax PS and will definitely wait until Sept 1 to buy anything. You saved me $147 on a P4 2.4 at todays prices. Plus that will give me a chance to see how ATI card and SIS 648 are fairing out in the field. Even if I finally decide to go with the RDRAM the prices should be lower.

Just in case you are interested, here is a site that reviewed a Radeon 9700 board. Note that this is not the 9700 Pro. This board is a little bit slower. Expect to see the Radeon 9700 Pro that will be released at the end of the month to be a little bit faster. Asus also just officially launched their new board. I will set a link to that as well. Yes if you do overclock, lets say u up the fsb to 160 with the RDRAM you will probably get a memory rating of almost PC-1300 or 650 Mhz, your cpu speed will be at 2880. Nothing could compete with this. Anyway here you go:
