oh yeah and on linux is there like a DOS type thing? where you can do like IpConfig or like Netstat commands and few all your ip's and internet connections and stuff like that?
and say you wanted to change the speed of the way the windows open like the drop down menu's... like in windows you can edit the MenuShowDelay in the registry, anything in lInux?

I do have Opera installed, but I mostly use Mozilla as my browser. Main reason is because Opera doesn't do Ad-blocking as well as Moz can. Opera is still faster, and renders some pages better though.

The little applet on my gentoo box shot is a separate program called gdesklets. They have a website. And the desktop environment is gnome.
Some day I'll be rich and famous for inventing a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet.
eterm is just a terminal program... basically command line. Linux really is just a command line operating system, and you throw Xwindows (gui) on top of it. All of the guts are command line driven. So that's your DOS type thing. It's really almost all command line and very little gui. You can do a netstat and ifconfig etc, as well as a whole ton of other stuff.
You can change the menu drop down speed, window appear mode (fade in, slide in, pop up etc), number and size of multiple desktops, number size and orientation of virtual desktops, etc etc, all in your gnome config. You have more control and more options with linux.

I use firefox for my browser.

ls - list files in directory, similar to dir in DOS
cd - change directory like dos
mv - move/rename
rm - remove(delete)
rpm -Uvh
rpm -i - update/install rpm packages
tar -zxvf - untar and un-gzip an archive (throw a j in there somewhere and remove the z and it works for bzip2 IIRC)
ps -A - list all processes
locate - find
glxinfo - display 3d information
ln -s - create symbolic link (shortcut)

Oh, and to compile something from source, here's how it's done 99% of the time:
./configure
make
make install

ahh nice........ so in command line.. or Terminal i just type that

A HELL of a lot of trouble with wine (free), or a fairly quick and painless install of winex by transgaming ($).
First you'll have to get your hardware acceleration going, which shouldn't be too difficult as you have an nvidia card. The instructions are fairly simple.

Although a lot of people here recommend "easy" distros like Fedora and Mandrake, I think it's a very good idea to go with Slackware if you have a friend who is willing to help you. As for some of your questions that you have not gotten answered.
Linux is a lot faster if you do encoding/decoding stuff (music, movies, pictures etc), but it will usually seem slower in the GUI. The X windows system (XFree86) on Linux is a very feature rich environment, but hellish to configure and it supports many more or less arcane features. So your computer will seem slower at first (as you will be in X most of the time), but as you start to do "real work" you will see a pretty decent speed increase.
You'll get used to a LOT of acronyms in the *nix world, but most you can figure out like DEV, MNT etc. iso9660 is the standard format for CD-ROMS and iso8859 is a character set. Anything preceeded by iso is defined by the International Organization of Standards, so it's sometimes very cryptic what it really is.
Pretty much the only thing you'll lose is gaming performance. Some games are offered in Linux versions (ID seems to be good at this), some can be run in winex and some don't run at all. Even nativly supported games take a hit in performance usually.
However you'll gain a lot of knowledge and understanding about computers, and also countless hours of fun configuring servers and making stuff work the way you want them to.
I usually tend to introduce some security tools to the newbies since it's fun when you get those things to work (like logging your first port scan). Try out Ettercap, Ethereal, Nessus, nmap, IPtables/Netfilter (yes, they are both the same), snort and tripwire. These are fun programs that don't brake anything and offer tons of learning and fun at the same time. (Be a litte careful with nessus and nmap as nessus can be _very nasty_ if you want it to, and your ISP may not allow port scans although they are not illegal by law). When you get comfortable move on to configuring custom rules for PAM, install and configure FreeSWAN (or whatever is going to happen now), and then configure LIDS. When you have LIDS running with custom configuration you'll find that *nix is fun, or you'll curse and swear the entire country of Finland for ever existing.

if you are looking to make your desktop look better, a couple of window managers you can check out (in addition to kde, gnome) fluxbox (what im using) openbox, blackbox, enlightenment, window maker, tvwm, icewm, fwm, from the top of my head. if you install the gnome and/or kde (qt) libs, you can run any kde or gnome application, even if you are using a different windows manager.
apps to use
firefox -browser
xmms -media
xine or mplayer -video
openoffice -office
there are many choices for any task you could think of
kernel compiles
the kernel is the part of the os that directly interfaces with the hardware, and controls input and output to your computer, processing requests made by applications. the linux kernel is open source, so it can be compiled by anyone who wants. this is good because you can make a very small kernel for your system, that only includes support for devices you have, so unlike the nt kernel, you wont have extra code sitting in there that is not being used, and is slowing things down. compiling the 2.6.4 kernel took under 10 minutes on my p4/2ghz, so no, it is definatly not as long a process as your friend claims.
the reason gentoo installs take so long is becuase everything is compiled from the source code. this will result in _slightly_ faster performance as they can be optomized to your hardware, so for large packages such as xfree86 or kde, it will probably not be worth it. in that case, you install binaries of the program, which are pretty much precompiled packages.
xfree86 is an x server. it provides a graphical environment for your linux box, similar to the kernel controls your main hardware, x is part of the interfaces to gui devices, such as your mouse and video card. the window manager is what actually controlls the look of your desktop, it draws all the menus and windows you see.
the slackware install is not that hard, you will probably have the most trouble on figuring out which packages to install as you will not know what most of them are, but when you finish and boot for the first time, you will be greeted with a command prompt, and will have to set up everything by hand, which can be very hard for a beginner. that is why something like mandrake or fedora will be much better for a beginner. trust me, you will still have plenty to figure out from there. i had the same attitude as you when i started, but i did decided to try mandrake and it was a good way to get an intro. if you do do slackware on the first try (!) you will have to understand no one on irc on linux forums will want to help you with your forgivably noobish problems.
Hi Silver.....
Just wondering what app you have running with the weather in the bottom right of the link :Gentoo 1.4 running Gnome.
Can I install it on RedHat 9 or Fedora ?

You can run it on any distro provided you're using Gnome.

Wow.... what an ordeal trying to install.
I switched from RH9 to FC2 in hopes it would be easier but ran into other problems with net/sound with that distro that I have another post on. Did you have any problems with gdesklets ? If I give up on FC2 I will swap my RH9 drive back in and start a thread on gdesklets.....
God I hate being a newbie again. Winblows sucks but at least.......

Sort of, but once you figure out how it works it's pretty simple. Of course I just had gentoo do most of it for me:
emerge gdesklets-core
then I downloaded the sensors and displays I wanted, installed the sensors
./InstallSensor
in each directory, and started them up

Is emerge a "gentoo only" thing ?
