Is it an add-on, upgrade, full OS? It doesn't seem to be sold anywhere by itself. What is xp media edition and what does it do?

Windows XP Media Edition is another version of Windows XP Professional with various features that let you use your PC as a Media Center (as the name suggests). You can do all you could do with Windows XP Professional but you also get a remote control (designed by Microsoft) which lets you use its Music, Video and TV functions. You can actually use your PC to record proper live TV shows, you can sort music like a jukebox, you can look through your photo album and look through your collection of movies that you have made.

The PCs that have this version of Windows usually dont come with a monitor or are rather small, suggesting that you use your TV as the PCs monitor. This version of Windows is Microsoft's attempt to bring the horrible beige PCs into the living room. To make sure that Microsoft does not suffer from any Pircay whosoever, this version of Windows is NOT SOLD SEPARATELY (hence the reason they include a remote with these Media Edition PCs). This is a real bummer to people who want to build their own Home Theate PCs. Also unless someone can clone the remote controls, there is no way pirate versions of Media Edtion will work properly.

Media Edition is only really for those who want to put their PC into the living room and mainly use it for entertainment. Unless you have a monitor and TV plugged in or you use an LCD/Plasma screen then word processing and web surfing will be very hard to do on an average TV set.

Hope this helps
