I am thinking of buying a notebook for college. I am an avid gamer, and I need to figure out if now is a feasible time to buy one. I am currently looking at the Inspiron 8200 with 64mb Geforce4Go 440 graphics card. Is this going to last me at least two years, and still play games reasonably well? Is something going to come out a week from now that blows the doors off this card? I know with the ever-moving market that new cards come out, and I have to deal with that, but I mean is a card going to come out literally a week from now. Is this card even that good? I am currently running an old Geforce2 GTS on my desktop, is there a huge difference between the two cards? Thanks for the help everybody!

GeForce4 Go440 is a mobile version of GeForce4 MX440.

There are some differences between them--

1. Clock Speed: Standard MX440 has a clock speed of 270 MHz. Go440 is clocked at 220 MHz.

2. Fill Rate: Standard MX440 fillrate is 1100 Mtextel/s or 1.1 Gtexel/s. Go440's fillrate is 880 Mtextel/s

3. Memory bandwidth: Standard MX440 has 6.4 GB/s memory bandwidth. Go440 has 7.0 GB/s memory bandwidth.

GeForce4 Go440 is the fastest mobile graphics card at this moment. ATI mobility Radeon 7500 is the second fastest and little slower than GeForce4 Go440

This card is somewhat faster than your desktop GeForce2 GTS. But no huge difference between them.

Is it possible to upgrade a notebook once already factory done? And if so, how easy? Are there any cards coming out any time soon that should blow the doors of this one?

I'm really not sure if you can, but I know R9000 mobile will be out soon, and I'd say it's faster, and also has DX8 compliant hardware.

There is no way to upgrade the graphics chip on your notebook. For cooling and space requirements the chips are all on-board. The best expansion anyone's ever come up with for a laptop is a memory upgrade, but that's it.

In the case of nVidia, not only you can't upgrade hardware, you don't get driver update either. We have a gateway portable, with a geForce2 Go, it has real problems with OpenGL driver, gateway has no idea how to fix it, and nVidia doesn't do anything with it as well, we end up with a portable, a "high performance gpu", but every time we try to run anything, we have to turn on software render only. Don't know about ATI drivers. So good luck!

There, go look around at the R9000 Mobile's reviews. They seem really quite good.

BTW, do you just need to save room, cause there's this. Put in some good parts, and get a 15" LCD panel, and you'll have a much better system than any laptop, for probably not as much.
