Ohhhhh yeah daddy knows about voodoopc machines very well. Unfortunately I do not have that kind of cash. I looked at the Compaqs but do not like the support that comes with them. I dont even wanna get started with the e-machines. Well I was looking into the Dell Inspirion 9100 but they are all Intel chips. Cool thing is that I have inside sources in Dell and can get a mad discount.

So why are you asking here?

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...

Reply to blah

... ditto.

why not get a 'mad discount' on a Dell; sell it, and buy your A64?

oh, and IMO, I would just as soon go for a Compaq/HP as I would a Dell.

Cause I really want an a64 notebook. If I cannot find a descent one for a good price then I was going to get a dell.

A good Athlon64 notebook is available from eMachines.

The e6805 which has an A64 3000+ mobile chip, 512 Megs of PC 2700 RAM, 60 Gig HD, 24 x 4 USB 2.0 and 1 firewire port(s), and built in wireless.

It is based on the Arima W720K8. Almost no major computer dealer designs and builds their own laptops.

the screen is a 1280 x 800 resolustion widescreen. it's very bright and is powered well by the 64 Meg 9600 Radeon.

You can buy it on the emachine's website or look at it in person at Best Buy. I'm aware that people will say that eMachines suck and they did 3 or 4 years ago. Things have changed. eMachines is now owned by Gateway and people have been saying good things about the 68xx line of laptops on different boards.

It came with Norton Antivirus, Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator 6, and microsoft works installed. Also had
quicktime, winamp 2, and realplayer intstalled. pretty good package.

Also it came with 3 restore CD's

I've followed what people posted about the 68xx series on www.hardforums.com, www.notebookforums.com, and
forums.anandtech.com. What I've read on those boards
convinced me to buy one.

The price was a big factor. $1499. I wanted the latest Dell or Alienware but those cost upwards of a grand more for a machine with similar specs. If you are still wary you can get a 3 year extended warrantee. Best Buy had a 200 dollor mail in rebate at the time I got it so I paid about $1800 total in the middle of May for it.

So far I've played UT 2003 on this machine at 1280 x 800 with all the goodies except AA and AF and I get 40 - 70 frames per second. I used fraps to check.

Playing CoH heroes I get about 20 - 40 frames per second with some details toned down slightly.

Pluses:

bright screen,
plays all the games I want it to for now.
fairly good keyboard I like the feel, although the
space bar is kinda small (got used to it)
Fairly good software package.
HD and wireless PCI and one Memory Module easily
accessible.
You can upgrade the CPU if you're really adventurous

Minuses:
Fairly heavy 7 or 8 pounds. (not really a problem though).
Non upgradable GPU
Only one Memory Module accessible without voiding the
warrantee.
Norton Antivirus pretty obnoxious I have to disable auto-
protect to play games otherwise there are lag spikes.

All in All it's a good machine especially if you look at similarly specced machines from Dell or Compaq or Toshiba.
Can't beat the features for the price.

Yeah I cannot say that I am a biggot when it comes to e-machines and even gateway, had bad exp with gateway with an old performance 600. Those are not bad configs with the M6810. Wat kind of bench scores do you get with your machine?

I ran 3dmark '03 just now and got 2449 3dmarks. It's what I usually get. I haven't disabled every background program but I ran it after a boot.

As I said in my previous post I get 40 - 70 fps in UT 2004 at 1280 by 800 with the eyecandy turned up pretty high.

I don't know the 3dmark 2001 score because it won't run. I'm not going to bother trying to troubleshoot the problem because aside from that the laptop runs all the games I play well.

looking at other posts I've seen people get 3dmark 2001 scores in the 9000+ range without overclocking.

if you overclock you can get another 1000 to 2000 3dMarks in 3dMark 2001. People have said that the GPU is very overclockable in posts on the bulletin boards I've mentioned.

I just bought the Emachines 6805 at Bestbuy with $300 in mail in rebates. It has an ATI 9600 mobility video card, AMD Athlon64-Mobility CPU (1.8ghz 1GB L@ cache), 512 MB ram, and it is solid. I did a LOT of research and this is your best bang for the buck. If you want a DVD burner and faster 64bit CPU go with the 6809.

Yeah I was looking into the a64 3200. Wish they used pc3200 memory Those e-machines are pretty sweet looking and not bulky like the Inspirom 9100 which is thick as a dictionary. I got alot the thinking to do.

...If you can, buy as little memory as you can from the Manufacturer (Dell / Emachines / wateva), and then buy as much RAM as you want after-market (like from resellers or distributors or wholesalers... you get the picture) - it usually works out cheaper, and you can choose the RAM that you want.

Way ahead there buddy! Dell lowest for the Inspiron 9100 I believe is 256mb. I want to put 2 512 sticks in it and know Dell will charge an arm and a leg for it. Know of any good notebook RAM? I was going for GEIL again.

Good good! Best bet for a Dell is to get Samsung (or Samsung-based) RAM. Lots of experience has taught me that it is the most compatible.

If you want to get a Dell try the 8600 inspiron cause you can get with the newer Pentium M CPU's now and it is closer than the Mobile Pentium 4 to the Athlon 64 in design philosophy (imho). In terms of larger L2 cache and better FPU performance than the P4 mobile or desktop. Plus, it has the best battery life of any CPU put in a laptop.

It'll be more expensive even with just 256 megabytes of RAM, but Dell does have arguably the best support for laptops as far as I know. Customer support is the hit you take if you buy an eMachine. However the 3 yeah warrantee from Best Buy is very good. For example they'll replace the battery when the one that comes with the lappy starts to degrade in performance for free.

Reply to Arashi

That 8600 Is an ok choice but dont like that AGP in it. Dell NOW has descent support as long as you buy business. If you buy personal/home use then you will get stuck with overseas support that are completely retarded and overdependent on scripts, just like gateway/emachine. If I do get emachine, I will make sure to get Besy Buy warranty support.

as much as Dell support may suck - it is still the best out of all of them (home/home office based). And I've found that if you know your way around it, it can be very good - and it does have the best reputation (as bad as it might sound).

I found Crucial to be the MOST (if not ALL) compatible with ALL types of ANY PCs that I (or you) might have.

Reply to blah

That is so ironic! Surprisingly I've found crucial RAM to be less than compatible once or twice. Although for some reason I am lead to believe that Crucial have used Samsung chips in the past...
