My monitor has started to fade out from bright to dim and then return ,
almost like some sort of power surge. This has happened several times a day
and there are no storms to account for power surges. I do have a surge
protector. My monitor is a 19 inch crt about 5 years old. Could this be a
sign of a future failure in the making? I would like to get an lcd for
replacement is this goes bad. Could you recommend a good monitor at a
reasonable cost?

Sure sounds like it's starting to go if you have no plausible explanation
for the spontaneous changes in brightness. I like the Samsung Syncmasters.
Fry's/Outpost has a good sale on a 17" model right now (these are measured
differently than CRTs so it would be very close in actual viewing area
compared to your current monitor):

However, if you have a store close to you I recommend going and *looking*
at each monitor/model in action - especially with flat panel screens. While
Samsung's in general are "pleasing" to my eye, you may prefer a different
brand.
