Help - SpySweeper Wants to Remove/Fix???
Forum Windows XP : Windows XP General Discussion - Help - SpySweeper Wants to Remove/Fix???
Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support,microsoft.public.windowsxp.perform_maintain (More info?)
I have been searching the web, but still have not found any good
information. Anyone have more details/thoughts on what SpySweeper is
finding? Are these safe or should be removed? They are currently
quarantined, but I can reverse it if they should not have been.

Help... I just discovered that letting SpySweeper proceed to quarantine the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\optionalcomponents
\* below results in a Norton Internet Security 2005 error.
Error: "The Norton AntiVirus component is not installed or failed to
load..." (3031.9), (3031.10), (3031.6)
Taking them out of quarantine, restores the functionality. I still do not
understand why it is flagging these registries... any insights? Do I need
to have it remove it and then do an uninstall and reinstall?

Double-checked via regedit and all registry settings for
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\* Value
data are legitimate paths to known safe applications that start at startup.
The exes and processes they point to was also confirmed. Now I am more
confused why SpySweeper is flagging them???

It looks like a conflict between the two. Spysweeper is trying to quarantine
the same thing as NIS. Do this..open Spysweepr and select options, then
click on report spyware paste your report here and send it to spysweeper, do
the same for Norton.

Thanks for looking at it... I also posted it to the CastleCops SpySweeper
Security Forum. I was a little surprise with the SpySweeper flagged items
as I have SpySweeper, Spybot, Microsoft AntiSpyware, Ad-Aware and NIS 2005
all installed and at the latest version. Keeping at the latest version has
been a little of challenge with Microsoft AntiSpyware though. All the
other software is coming up clean. I am thinking that this is a false
positive... I am just afraid that I am missing something. This happen
after the latest definition updated... maybe SpySweeper had an error in the
latest file. Sending the log in was a great idea, maybe they will discover
an error on their end or tell me what I need to do on mine.
Thanks again for all your help and thoughts!@

You will not believe this... from the CastleCops website, someone let me
know that for everyone using AT&T SpySweeper, they got a bad definition
update (509). Using 509 will result in false positives and removal of
registry settings that will stop certain applications from running.
Solution... update definitions to 511, remove items that 509 put in
quarantine and run sweep. Guess what... none of them now get flagged.
