Hey,

I found a way to download email to outlook and not have my antivirus software interfere. Every antivirus (most of them) has a pop3 scanner that starts when windows starts. If you have antivirus software and you use a third party program like aol2pop, enetbot or web2pop that downloads your email into outlook then I'm sure you have run into problems. Sometimes you'll get timeouts or can't log onto server, etc. The problem is that the third party software (aol2pop, etc) needs to bind to port 110 in order to get your email. Your antivirus software scans this same port because it is usually reserved for email. This is what causes some of those errors. It happens at startup. If your third party software loads first then you are ok. If your pop3 scanner (part of your antivirus software) loads first then you may get an error saying that enetbot or aol2pop is unable to bind to port 110. In this case you can't get your mail. You can disable the pop3 scanner in msconfig but your email will not be scanned- Pc-cillin's is called pop3trap and norton's is called something like popccl or something (not sure)- there should be a "pop" in there- check your startup programs in msconfig.

Well, I used to deselect pop3trap in msconfig and use batch files to start it at the same time as outlook but that got annoying. I abandoned the batch files and for months I just left pop3trap deselected and hoped I didn't get a virus from my email. But recently, I found these programs that alter the way startup programs load. One is Startup Organizer by Meta products- its ok. It costs $25. Becareful- you can mess up your system if you don't know what you're doing. Anyway, it allows for some programs to start after other ones and set delays for startup programs. Don't get this one because if you do alter the way something loads then you can't restore it that easily. You have to create backups and manually restore the file- really annoying. I just installed Absolute Startup by F group software and it works really well. It can restore everything to normal startup by just one click- which is what you want. It allows me to select Pop3trap (pc-cillin pop3 scanner) and set a delay for 2 seconds after everything else loads. This way my pop3 email program can bind first. So far I have had zero errors and my email is finally getting scanned like it should be. You will never even know this software is there. It monitors registry changes and blocks some startup worms and viruses too. Overall it's a good program.

Just thought I'd share the news because I searched everywhere for an answer to this and could not find one. Every support forum said to change the ports in outlook and the third party software so that the email scanner can't interfere, but your email is not being scanned.

Absolute Startup costs 25 bucks but there is an evaluation period.

There is other stuff out there too- some free- but some don't come with an installer/uninstaller and they lack the refinement of the other ones.

If I can help one person with this post I'm happy

See ya
