Ya, I realize this is the wrong forum. But seems like topics barely move even here.

Heres a shot with my current LCD on the left and the 2405 on the right link
Pulled that from a guy at my main forum.

I think I'm getting this guy.. be the perfect compliment to my SLI.
The wife gets the 2005FPW..

I dont know how many here out of of this but I coudl see one wondering why the Dell LCDs are popular.. well, they are priced right and great panels from LG and other manufacturers.

I think this guy will be about as high as a single link DVI card will go.. 1900x1200.
Reports are that X850s/6800GTs and the like are powering it fine without being dual link.

Reports are the 30" Apple Cinema (another killer LCD) is requiring a dual link card.
Which, to my knowledge for gaming cards is limited to the Apple only 6800Ultra, Quadros and FireGLs for the PC.

All I can say is DAMN nice screen.. I'm starting up on WoW when I get this thang.
Ppl are reporting no dead pixels (my current panel has no dead pixels) and no backlight issues.
Should last a while I hope.

Is that a 2005 next to a 2405? I'm on the 2005 and might give it to my brother and get the 2405 when I find a 25% off coupon.

My 2005fpw has dead pixels and possibly some backlight issues but I have another one coming tommorrow.

yeah it is the 2005 next to the 2405.

i love this 2005.. and im pleasantly suprised with my move to lcd.. i aint never ever going back from dvi/cleartype

while 1680x1080 8xAA/16xAF is pretty sweet.. reports are that SLI is pushing 1920x1200 (2405) w/2xAA/16xAF in HL2@~40-100fps... awesome.

im def down for this one.. going to wait a few weeks to get some more reports and benchies from some friends at other forums but im pretty psyched about 1920x1200 in WoW and HL2

That is a sweet screen, I read about it last week, but a $1,999 US pricetag made me go WTF? Nice to see it was a typo and is selling @ 1,199. The 2005 here is $899 CDN without purchase and $749 with purchase (I was [still may] going to see if they'd still give be 'pruchase price' due to it being less than a year since the laptop).

Anywhoo, the 24" is nice, but as for running the max resolution, they may be running it with the DB-15/VGA connector, as 19x12x32 is the absolute max of single link, and you need quality TMDS(s) for that, and many of the tests out there haven't bee favourable on the quality.

all i can say is that ppl are reporting with the latest cards it runs it fine at native res with the DVI. i believe it.

Quality?

I read one review and it was a good one. I think at extremetech.

They can be had for $860 if you call Dell. No one with a decent card has been complaining of poor quality, either.

I'd really question if any of them would know what a red-shift, jitter or noise is. Most people going on about them on their X800/GF6800 or whatever card would be gamers, and as long as it displays the pixels they think it's just fine. And really if you have noise/jitter at high res, what's the point in using DVI over DB-15?

It could be that they are getting good results with reduced blanking which is more than likely supported, but I just would be leary when recommending them to people who might notice the difference.

Here's Lars' look at DVI connectors, it's very thorough;

http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041129/index.html

And based on those results and Extremetech's results, I'd worry about some of the cards out there trying to push pixels on the 2405. I think for Kinney/Game it won't matter because with his SLI rig it'll have more then enough bandwidth using 2 single links.

In layman terms what does that mean to me with one single x800xl?

Have you seen the new Samsung 19'' LCD with 8MS under $500 USD?

19" looks really small now. 17" is almost comical. Once you spend time with a widescreen you really can't go back.

Yeah like I was telling game/kinney I was just looking at one at BestBuy/FutureShop here in Canada and it was on sale for $458 IIRC. It was like $100-150 off! Nice monitor, looked brighter with better contrast than those beside it too, and didn't seem washed out like some. I just wish it had Pivot. The older Samsung 21" 25ms 1600x1200 with tilt/pivot/rotate is $999 (used to be $2499!), it's so tempting if it weren't for the terrible refresh. For the new 8ms the other drawback is that it's 1280x1024, I'd really prefer slightly more pixels (I'm so useed to 1920x1200 [used to be 1440 before we switch to the Intel Extremes!] at work), dang why can't the consult with me first! That's a few of the reasons why the dells are so attractive. But still there is new stuff coming out all the time.

The logo for 8ms is stupid race cars, should be a monster or something, Formula 1 or Nascar games aren't the problems FPS games with quick 180 degree spins are the games these would be best for. Anyways, like the idea of the technology just would prefer better dimesions and options.

Also I've been considering a new overall TV for the winter olympics in Torino, and Projectors are getting cheaper all the time. I just saw a new LCOS one (can't remember the maker [Canon?]) whihc was 14XX x 1080, and that looked like a damn fine choice to me especially since lamps are getting cheaper now. I'm really getting more confused by the second. I was set on a Phillips TV for this Xmas or my birthday next year (around the time of the Olympics), but Phillips drop LCOS and I see the DLP rainbow. So I need a new Big screen (the 26" and 27" won't cut it) for my 2 weeks off work of non-stop watching! Anywhooo, too many options, not enough decision making ability on my part, or crunch time motivation (if something better might come in 4 months I have to think about that! ).

Arghhh, anywho, back to the main question, yes I've seen the Samsungs.

To you with an X800XL, it should likely be fine, the nVidias seem to be the ones with jitter issues, you should be able to run max resolution on the Dells without problems.

I just think you should keep in mind that you may have issues, however unlikely, and you may need the VGA/DB-15 option should they arise. Thankfully the Dells have that fallback option. For the 2005FPW it should matter as they should all do fine at that level.

Doesn't the X800's all come with at least one DVI? None are analong only that I know of...

That's right, but if you card can't push clean signal from the TMDS and you have even moderately long cable, you're gonna be best served by the VGA over the DVI. It's just the flexability. All the cards have both (except low profile or DVI only [which still have analog within]), but you need your monitor to have it too or else you're stuck.

Yes, but we were specifically talking about the Dell 24" Mon and the X800 card.
Why or better yet what situation would cause a DVI card not to push a clean signal to a DVI monitor besides an unusually long monitor cable?

The ATI's push clean from the chip based TMDS and as such I would expect that you'd find almost all will be fine, but for whatever reason, poor PCB, bad chip (the one tested was an R420 [not even R423]) so you never know the R430 could display problems even though it's unlikely, but quite possible. The 2405 will be pretty much the max of the single link in even the best conditions, and if the ATIs displayed the slightest hint of noise (check the red freq eye diagram for the X800m it's a little rough, but still solid) you may want to switch. I'm not saying it's an absolute must as it might be on some cards with far poorer results, but you can't tell based on a single test of a 'similar' card.

Just to show you how it COULD matter (but probably doesn't), let's say Low-K insulation helped in all three of Lars' tests to insulate signal cross talk within the chip, with the x800XL being 110nm non low-k, who knows that may affect the output/outcome. Now I don't think it matters in the least, but as an example of X and Y being different it's something to consider if you start seeing the typical display corruption. The main reason to go DVI is for less noise/corruption/conversion errors, if at the very limits of the technology you see more corruption, then it makes sense to switch back to the tried and true. Just like BNC connectors, good for what they do well, but not needed for all situations.

Anywhoo, the primary thing was to just be aware that there can be problems and make sure you have the tools to deal with them.
