I've got an external 160g Archos USB hard disk connected to my main PC....
(Win XP home)

....I can also separately connect it to my old win 98SE computer.....

Can I via a USB hub connector connect it to both at the same time so that
either computers can access the data on it without having to unplug one and
plug it on the other.....????.

Advid:
Take a look at this gizmo...

I've used it to connect a USB printer to two computers and it worked fine.
But I've never used it with a USB external hard drive so I can't confirm it
would work with that device, although it should.

P. S.
You mention connecting this switch through a USB hub. In the past we've
frequently encountered problems connecting this or that USB device to a USB
hub but no problem when the device was connected directly to the computer's
USB port.
