Back in the Saddle again...
Forum Graphic & Displays : Graphics Cards - Back in the Saddle again...
Well enough about my love life.... How y'all doing?
It was great being out East, still wish I was there to a great extent, oh well the snow will fall soon enough and I'll be glad to be here again.
Didn't really have a chance to check in here so it looks like I have alot of reading to do.
Yes, the Dell was waiting at work for me Yesterday when I got in, and I've only now had a chance to install all the updates and stuuf and check it out. Gaming is OK (still hate the touch pad, I could probably play D3 with a trackpoint if need be so trackball was needed), however benchmarking is SAD!
With a P4 2.8ghz HT plugged into the power outlet (didn't check to make sure it was running full-out ) windows is set to decide for me, I'll run another set of tests later. Anywhoo, 513mb of DDR333 and the FX5200 didn't fair well. At 640x480 (fuzzy on this LCD) first run was 267.8 seconds = 8.0fps, second run not much better at 264.2sec = 8.1fps.
Anywhooo, good to be back gonna post more pictures later. Didn't have time to visit ATI even though I drove right by it on Hwy 7 after golfing with my dad at the old IBM country club in Markham.
Here's a <A HREF="http://img62.exs.cx/img62/1171/Hell_Laptop_n_Phone.jpg" target="_new">PIC of the laptop along with the phone</A> (this time with the D3 flaming lost souls on the screen).
BTW, <A HREF="http://www.pusboil.com/evilhomer.wav" target="_new">THIS</A> is my ringer for my phone right now also.
G'night all, chat ya' later.

hello grape! You are finally back
Welcome back. You do have alot to catch up on with HL2, CS:Source, and 6600GT reviews abuntant. Firing squad seems to have been busier than most sites, or at least taking a more serious interest in HL2. Might want to head there when you get bored with Doom 3 and catch up some.
P.S. The GrapeNutz fan club dissolved in your leave.

Hey Perv! What's Up?
Watching Olympics and Surfin' with the Laptop on the couch (Mmmm 802.11A). Still getting used to the touchpad, and damn this laptop is HOT on the lap (P4 2.8ghzHT running at 1.5g [clock back when not working hard]) pumps out a fair amount of heat out the back.
MMmmm toasted is better!

Yeah, just checking the HL2 stuff slowly right now.
Seems the consensus is that the ATIs do well (all thing being equal), but that this is a stress test, and not really fully representative of game play. But what is the Timedemo of D3? (unplayable on the laptop but the game is fine for the most part).
Interesting results, but exoect stuff to change once the game is out and can be optimized and floptimized.
Also it appears that the 'HL2 going gold' post from 'Gabe' was a hoax.

d00d, please tell me you bought a mouse for your laptop, PLEASE tell me you did!
Sweet ass ringers and damn, didn't know you could have such backgrounds on a cell phone, sw00t!

Surprised the 802.11g wasn't included in the laptop. All those we sell that have wireless, so far use G IIRC.
Is the wireless connection working well though? Pumping up the expected amount of bandwidth like wired? What security settings did you enable? (planning on a wireless setup early next year)

Nice pic of your cell and laptop.
Don't roast those crown jewles. With that dell.

I use a Kensington Trackball and it's awesome, I can use it on the couch, no 'elbow room' issues.
I have G it's 802.11 A/B/G, however I prefer A due to no interferance from cells and other wireless and less chance of snooping since most people have B/G, and better WEP @ 152 bit.
As for additional security I lock in the MAC addresses and thus reduce/stop the risk of others from connecting.
802.11 A is getting rarer, but I think I could run without WEP and wide open, without the risk of anyone else connecting.
<b>HB</b>, thanks for the kudos and the advice/warning. I think I may get a laptop stand for the couch because it does get damn hot the air coming out, the base is ok, but the air blows right on my knee, I expect the hair to burst into flames any moment now.

Damn, the way you describe enjoying the web and using the laptop on the couch seems so comfy and fun. I'm imagining myself laying on the couch doing that. Ahhhh...
What does a laptop stand look like?
Touchpads are indeed annoying, I must admit. When I try to show a customer what's inside that laptop and the software, the trackpoint shows its weakness. Just not flexible and fast enough.
Then again I still think a normal mouse isn't any worse than a "notebook mouse" (mini version) for use with a laptop when travelling. The difference in size just doesn't seem an issue when you look at regular case size and typical usage surfaces. But they're cute lil mice I must admit, hehe.
Though that notebook USB memory card is really exagerating it. Come on! I mean, as if they're not small and portable already, you have to offer mini versions too, like the Cruzer Mini Notebook version from Sandisk? It's not even half the size of the Cruzer Mini, yet it costs less and probably works just as well.

Doomed Doomed he's all Doomed up.
Yes, a few weeks ago. It was good but not HL good. In the beginning it was but like some have said, it got kind of repetitive. I also should have played on a harder setting... more of a challenge would have made it better. The ending was good, and bad. Too short IMO, but it had a good ending video that didn't piss me off like Far Cry's ending video did, and it left the possibility for a Doom 4.

A Laptop stand looks like a TV dinner tray/stand with short short legs (like a breakfast in bed table).
As for the touchpad, the roller/track-ball is a good solution. The belly-button trackpoint of the Thinkpads is still awesome (good enough for gaming IMO), I think next laptop will HAVE to be a Thinkpad even if it's got mediocre graphics. I also miss the 'ThinkLight', I was watching 'Comedy Central Roast of Denis Leary' last night and I wanted to adjust brightness and volume with the function keys, and I couldn't see what was what. That Thinklight seems like a gimmick but man did it ever make a difference. Nice touch.

LOL So thats why you bought that laptop. So you can stay in bed all day long. And play with your new toy.
Play with the old toy ya' mean!
Actually I needed something for the couch, to take to work, take on trips (flying back east in Oct for work), and when at hotels during ski trips (saves on pay per view in the middle of freakin' nowhere).
Nice to have something with USB2.0 and Firewire too so that I can do editing on the road as well.
But having something bedside like in 'Other People's Money' is kinda sweet. Just wish I wasn't worrying about smacking it if I used it to wake-up to.

Yeah my dad's Thinkpad has the ThinkLight. Didn't know it wasn't present on other laptops.
I figured it would come in handy at some point.

Yeah my old T-pad had one and I miss it; dang them boyz at IBM sure is smurt!
<b>priyajeet</b>, yeah I had that for e-mail for a while, got a little tiresome. My current one is ASH from Army of Darkness saying <A HREF="http://new.wavlist.com/movies/093/aod-groovy.wav" target="_new">GRr-oOoovy</A>; never get tired of that. And it's short and Sa-weEet!
I'm thinking of changing my ring to <A HREF="http://www.fortunecity.com/lavender/python/35/smart.wav" target="_new">another Homer phrase</A> (of course I'll get a better version).
Then there's these two candidates.
<A HREF="http://www.moviewavs.com/TV_Shows/Simpsons/pokerdog.wav" target="_new">Dogs playing Poker</A>
<A HREF="http://www.moviewavs.com/TV_Shows/Simpsons/32dohs.wav" target="_new">And this was pretty much made to be a ringer</A>
and back to <A HREF="http://new.wavlist.com/movies/093/aod-broomstick.wav" target="_new">This</A> and <A HREF="http://new.wavlist.com/movies/093/aod-swallow.wav" target="_new">This</A> from Army of darkness if I get bored.
