Hi, i'm one of those users who tested the external beta of Symantec Norton Antivirus 2004, and found out that it needed to be activated in 3 days or it will stop working. I felt bad about this, I've been using nav for 4 years and I might shift to mcafee or anything without activation.

What do you think about this?

Yeah unfortunately Symantec has gone down the path of give away the old stuff and charge like wouded bull for latest version.

If you stick to Aopen they usaully give away the AV product on their CD but usaully have to manually install the virii update.

This is what I use, latest does not mean best, because its usaully bugware.

You aren't the first person to realize that Symantec's products just aren't what they used to be; especially the Anti-Virus and Systemworks packages.

This is the product that I turned to as a replacement a couple of years ago: Panda Anti-Virus Platinum 7.0. It's an excellent utility, in all respects, and IMHO, it's superior to similar offerings released by other companies.

I hate this product activation crap. If I buy software I want it to just work. I don't want every stupid application to connect to the internet and ask permission to work.

Imagine what it will be like if every program required activation.

5 years from now when you build a new PC and you may have to make 20 phone calls to ask permission to reinstall all your software because it has already been activated.

Then of course they can force you to upgrade by just not activating old products.

My hope is that Symantec is only doing this with the beta and that the retail product will not require activation, otherwise they won't be seeing another dime from me ever!
