I have just built a new m/c with dual Xeon CPU's on an ASUS mobo using the
promise raid array in striping mode. Loaded new copy of XP pro OEM SP2 with
all updates. All has gone OK except that in most, but no all applications,
the files structures in the 'save' and 'open' dialogue box seem to have taken
on a arrangment system of their own which could possibly be based on when the
fiules were last modified in reverse order, but it is hard to be sure. I want
them ordered by name. If I right click on the list of files or folders I
have the option to arrange by name, which solves the problem for that
specific level but makes searching out files an absolute nightmare. The files
arrangement is as I would expect in 'Explorer', but not most of the
mainstream packages I am using eg Adobe Photoshop, CorelDraw, Macromedia
Dreamweaver etc
Any help on this mystery problem would be much appreciated
Ralph

This is an old sort order problem (present in most versions of Windows):
Open Windows Explorer and put the focus on C:. Change view to Details.
Order the Name column. Then open Folder Options and click the "Apply to all
folders" button. OK and then use File> Close to close Windows Explorer.

You'll have to reset your view for some folders (customized folders will
still be customized) but the sort order in dialog boxes should be okay now.
If not, repeat the steps but close Explorer holding the CTRL key and
clicking the X.

Some programs (not many) will maintain separate sort orders and viewing
preferences for their own dialog boxes. You'll need to adjust those
individually while working in that program and using that program's menus.
The most efficient way would be to do this as you come across them.
