Would like to know how to open the case of my Palm Vx. I know one is
supposed not to do this, but I have a well-founded suspicion that there
is a bad electrical connection in there, together with a hope that I
will find a connector that I can re-seat. Memories of re-seating
electrical connectors in PCs to solve strange problems prompts me to
think I could do the same with my Vx.

You would very likely be incorrect in your assertion.

What possible room could exist inside a Vx, the thinnest Palm PDA ever
made to-date, that would cause a connector to get "unseated"?

Well, IIRC, there is at least 2 connectors that can get unseated in a Vx.

To answer Michael, here is an URL:
<http://www.gethightech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=GHT&Category_Code=_P5TAKE>

I would add 2 suggestions to this page:
- try to create something to protect the screen
- it's easier (and safer) to open the case in a continuous way instead
of heating it completly and trying to open it all at once

Be careful, it's tricky. The hardest part for me was finding the Torx
driver to open it. If I remember right, it's a #6. I hunted all over
for one, locally and on the net. Found a set of small Torx tools in a
surplus parts place.
You also have to be careful taking it apart. Just do slow and careful!
The on/off switch can fall out and be tricky to get back in right. Best
to keep it laying flat, fix what you came to fix, and button it back
up.
Hope this helps in your world!

Thanks all. Some good material there. I'll have a go - nothing to lose,
as the fault is such a nuisance I wouldn't want to pass it on to
someone.

Main evidence for a bad contact is that the certain (though temporary)
cure is to hold the Vx vertically ("Palm VX" up e.g.) and tap it smartly
on the table.

My Torx set goes down only to 10, so I shall have to find a small one.

Looks like being fun.

I just took apart my Vx. No torx in there. Other models use the torx,
V/Vx is glued. But do keep your eye out for a set of tiny torx bits.
They do come in handy on current generation stuff.

I was unable to get mine apart with a hair dryer. Took a paint stripper
to do it.

It's very easy to bust the little tabs off the buttons. Be careful
when removing/installing the boards in the case.

Michael
As another person who had done it, you have to get the Vx very, very hot for
it to come apart but it is not as difficult as it sounds.
