LARS did a very good job this time around, with lots of tests and lots of info. And a nice aside from Thomas about ASUS' current situation/decision (I agree wholeheartedly). I wonder if the VGA Buyer's guid would still give kudos to the FX5600 line.

LOL, if the 9500P can beat the 5900U, can the 8500P beat the 5800U? hehe.

wow, thanks for posting. lotsa reviews.
doesn't matter to me a ton though, I'm getting the 9800pro b/c the price is already dropping. Add ramsinks, slap in a slot cooler, I'll have XT performances for a lot less $$$.

Crash, I might be able to swap my R9000NP for an FX5800U and turn it into a Quadro.

If u gonna do ogl, the FX/ quadro r the way to go!
Hmm, 5 extra FPS for an XT...is it really worth it over a 9800P? Admiral Flame says no. Mwahah, I rule Captain Obvious.

Flame well I'm thinking about doing more MAYA come winter (on the days I can't ski and there's nothing on, and all of y'all are borin me
). My video editing and movie making sorta came to a halt over the summer due to alot of activity. We'll see.
I still think the R9000 does things just fine for now and the R9600P will be ok for later. I'd like A Quadro or FireGL, but decided I really don't need one, as much as it would be 'nice'.

OK finally read them all (only took 1 hours after arriving home!
So far I think the THG , [H] , and Nordic hardware reviews are the best with some good screenies and a fair bit of detail.
One of the most interesting interesting things I noticed was the effect of the XT for high resolution and large AA/AF (like at [H] in the TR-AoD benchmark ).
Also it was interesting in the Bjorn3D article that they mention a Vouvher for HL2 (I never though about that as being the HL2 bundle). That would kinda suck for people waiting for HL2. I would personally prefer a buggy version now, and a voucher for a downloadable upgrade/replacement.
A voucher for future use kind SUX IMO.
Anywhoo, my general impression, not much improvement, but a worthy addition if you are Starting from scratch and just want to build a killer rig. Whether or not it is worth buying now instead of waiting for thr R420/NV40 depends more on when those bad boys hit shelves, and no one seems sure about when that will be.
I would still like to see some benchies with the R9600XT, not just a description. I have a feeling I know what they will be like, but it would still be nice to see (especially if someone has a similar setup to mine.
Well that's just my 2 frames worth.
P.S. I'm also very thankful to [H] for telling me how to enable GOD mode in the XIII demo. Gotta try that later.

I don't understand why this card is getting as much attention as it is getting now. All it is is a rearranged 9800 Pro clocked a bit higher, not even a lot higher, but just a little higher. The clock speeds don't even come out to nice even numbers (though that doesn't matter its more of presentability.)
I do agree with one thing ATI is doing, they are marketing it as the 9800 XT so as no one will buy it hoping it will be a lot better than it's brother the 9800 Pro. I remember the fiasco with the 8500, 9000, 9100 and 9200 which I am still confused about now.
-----------------------
Add witty comment here.
i agree, getting a 9800pro and modding it to be even better than the xt is the way to go, especially with the dropping prices. but, do you think with the modified chip architecture for better heat dissipation that the xt could be clocked faster with the same cooling mechanisms?
btw, here's a couple more oxymorons for ur sig if you want them: military intelligence/boneless ribs
Really depends how complex things are gonna get with you. If you're gonna do very complex things, a standard gaming card will do. Some time before Maya had issues with ga,ming cards from Ati...dunno if that's fixed.
The one and only "Monstrous BULLgarian!"
I don't know, the Tom's HW review said the chip got very hot, and the R9800pro's 128megs of ram is a lot easier to cool/OC than the R9800XT's 256.
Remember, they also mentioned the shoddy attachment of the cooler to the card? I'd prefer to install ram sinks myself than have pre-assembled ones. That's the main point, the GPU cooler on the R9800pro is sufficient, just slap on the ram sinks and XT numbers will be in reach, I'll personally talk about how it goes b/c I'm getting a R9800pro in around 2 weeks (my first ATI card for 4 years!).

lol, yeah, forgot that the XT got pretty hot, i forget little details like that when i read something...anyway, good luck with the pro, wish i could get one to replace my Ti4200 (sure, it's fast enough for UT2003 and the other games i play, but i've learned to hate nVidia--a lot).

I think you should add "Hot black girls" to your list cooltek. (They're not completely non-existant, but its like 1 out of 1000, maybe even 1/10000). OUCH HARDCORE!!! Lol. Just my personal opinion

Flame, I'm still just playing with MAYA. It does work ok on the R9000NP, but it would be nice to try it with a real workstation card to fill my AGP-PRO slot.
In anycase, I'm not really worried, no one's paying me for this, and if it gets TOO annoying I'll either get a cheap FireGL from the Univ.; or a Quadro, or a Wildcat from one of the local dealers (I'd love to find a Wildcat IV on sale at used computer store).
But for now my tinkering will be sufficed with what I've got, but ohh the thought of something bigger/better is always nice. But considering I just ate my wallet for tuition and a few other items, I'm not willing to upgrade right now, especially after having seen the new Canon Rebel Digital at the local camera shop.

*Yawns*
I'm relatively unimpressed with the limited performance gain of the 9800XT. Considering that the good 'ol 9700 has a whole year of age on its name with somewhat similar performance, the 9800 XT really isn't all that Groundbreaking. I'd expect a bigger improvement after a whole year, but I guess there is really no good reason to blame ATi considering there is no one currently pushing them to be more competive than they already are. Heck, I owned a bussiness and no one could outclass my product, I would not have as much of a reason to push new technology either. I would milk a cash cow for all that it's worth. Well maybe things will get interesting this christmas with the R420 & NV40, maybe the Volari cards too!

LMAO!!!!, oh man is that true (IMO)
she's the 1 in 10000+, oh yeah, so is Halle Berry
No it was just a repeat and I couldn't delete it for some reason. Beyonce is pretty hot, but like I said, one out of a thousand
Halle Barry is not hot though, way overrated.
The most hot black chicks I've seen have been extras in rap videos.

Lol, theres alot of hot azns, rarer than whites/latinos but they're there, and certainly more populous than blacks. Too bad
Why do you think almost all black men are attracted (not ONLY) to white women, but not all white men are (in fact I'd say MOST aren't) attracted to black women? Huh, huh?! PROOF!

Yeah, it's not a major diff./improvement. But it is something.
It's partially a PR move IMO. Always launching something. I think it's also a release to do things like take the FX5900s out of Alienware and other 'gaming' maker's rigs.
The distance the XT puts between it and the non-pro does give it a bit more of an advantage, but it's really all about the 'GOTTA BE #1' market really. I'm more interested in the R9600XT and what its OC range is and the Catlyst 3.8 driver options (like Overdrive) that are likely bundled with the cards.
I think it's really what most of us came to expect in the last few days/weeks.
I'd still buy one if I was building a gaming system from scratch to dominate others with top-end rigs. But since most of my friends are still running 1-2 years old hardware I have no motivation, especially since the R9600P handles everything I throw at it (except Mozilla 1.5b BETA!
)
I think these reviews also give more and more people the opportunity to see the write-ups about nV's woes. Which may also have been part of the point.

I've noticed similar trends like that also. Even though I'm white, I tend to normally go for non-white chicks. But some reason, I haven't felt attracted to African women nearly as often as I have felt attracted to women of other cultures. I hope this statement hasn't offend any black members of the forum. I have several black friends. (Some of them are girls too.) (So, I'm NOT trying to be prejudice under any circumstance if anyone thinks so.)

Maybe its not a big improvement, but im still wondering if it can be o/ced. Also the Asus card seams to have a better quality cooling system so i'd like to see her potential.
I think it was the Asus reaching 60c tough anyway it might not be a real big performance boost, but at least 9800pro prices might drop a little wich is always good.
Why should the tastes you have in women be a bit more picky, make you racist?
Why should it make you sexist?
Everyone is racist, some however are truly racists. These people here, ARE NOT.

Well we all have our preferences and opions. However to air some of them on a public forum in this form really just isnt acceptable.
I never said the person making the comment was either Racist or Sexist, however what i said was that the comments were and that they are actually offensive. Please dont confuse the two. My statements were not made with any malice or ill intent what so ever towards those that made them. (Men never grow up, they just learn to hide it better
If you cant understand why these comments could be considered either sexist or racist and considered offensive then i am sorry but its not something i can explain to you. Its something that is learnt not taught(thats something else that takes time to make sense of /ponder)
However they should still be removed or edited out.
Well, thats bout all i am gonna say about it, <gets of soapbox> and i am definately not gona comment on Grapeapes post as i dont wish to compromise my current moral stand.
"" Society is to blame ""
Hey if Coolsquirtle who is Taiwanese (or some other forum user) comes out and says he is not sexually attracted white women, I would NOT find that offensive by any stretch of the imagination. This is not to say that this is his preferences, that was just a quick hypothetical example that I could pull from the top of my head.
Each individual has their own racial preferences that they look for in mates. My prefernece of Asian/Pacific/Latin American women is actually frowned upon by my Mom even though my Dad has no prob with it. Its just each individual's preference. I have no problems with people who prefer not to mix either. I have friends from many races, and just because some of my friends aren't physically attracted to women of my race doesn't mean I don't like those persons.

I must be too much of a fanboy. The one furthest to the left can amd me anytime. The intel person on page 7? Ugly or what?
I hope it gets more and more and more attention and I hope people buy into it. That makes it better for the enthusiast that wants to get ahold of the 9700 Pro or 9800 Pro...prices bottom out and I'm there.
Nvidia, the way it's meant to be benchmarked.
Public Forums wouldn't be public if we couldn't air our opinions and preferences...they'd be private forums. And this forum is exactly the place for anything anyone wants to talk about. We try and remind those that go off topic to come back to topic...but it's going to happen. You need to learn how to deal with opinions and preferences. There was nothing either racist nor sexist about any comment they made. In order to be either (racist or sexist), the person making the comment must be discriminatory and/or abusive toward race/sex. Notice that these comments are neither. Would it have offended you less if it were something like, "Polish women are kinda ugly...and their teeth are messed up" or "Korean chicks have weird looking faces" or something of that nature? Most likely this wouldn't have offended you as much because you're hopped up on the metaphorical, discrimenatory steriods that society has shot you up with.
You spoke of learning and teaching. Get out your pen and paper and take notes...you are about to learn something. There is something called an opinion. It is someone's personal idea about something. Personally I do not find Black women attractive. Does this make me a racist? Nay, it does not. According to you it does...but this comment is NOT offensive to anyone. It is a personal opinion. Is it degrading women? No. To be sexist, I'd have to discriminate against women AS A WHOLE.
Another thing you forget is that the women they are talking about PUT THEMSELVES UP FOR REVIEW by choosing to be in the public eye. They are moviestars and that means that their lives will be public. Period. This means that comments will be made about what they wear and how they look. By doing this; choosing the profession they are in, they are inviting critique. Critique is what is given here. So someone doesn't like black women? That's a personal preference and an opinion....it does not attack black people as a race and it doesn't attack women either...they didn't say they hated all women did they? You need to learn what you are talking about before you talk about it.
If you still don't know the difference between a personal preference (without abusive language as in our case) as opposed to racism...you need to change yourself to an Irish Mexican like me...and then move to the middle of the United States. Go to school in a small town where there are only caucasian kids. Make sure your last name sounds mexican too...something like...Martinez....wait..that's mine, you can't use that one. After you do this, you'll find out what racism truly is and you'll be able to tell the difference between honest opinion and flat out Mein Furor Seig Heil Hitler racism. Oh, and there are no moderators in this forum. Usually, if someone steps out of line...they're branded as a troll/flamer and they catch soooo much crap from the resident members that they will stop posting or switch names and calm their dumb arse down.
You'd better hope that people forgive you for being crass and judgemental...because from my standpoint, I'd love nothing better than to flame you out of the forum for being 'holier than thou' without knowing when discrimination or sexism is actually taking place...just be glad I didn't attack you personally. God knows I thought about it for a few minutes.
Actually, It's funny, you compromised your 'moral standards' by jumping to conclusions instead of educating yourself first (differences between opinion and discrimination).

TKS, I must say that was an exceptional post. You nailed several points right on the head. However, this dude does not deserve flaming, yet at least. It is completely natural for people to come to a forum misinformed. It happens all the time and so many of today's people are misinformed It won't be beneficial to jump on this guy and attack him. Afterall, he did say that he wasn't trying to cause a fight or any probs (or something like that. So, we should definitely cut this guy some slack and see how he accepts are logic on the situation. If he accepts it, Excellent. If he doesn't and ends up flaming us like barbequed chicken... well he'll deserve any flames he gets at that point.

Time to get back on track.....
Catalyst 3.8 overdrive drivers to be released october 8th.
These should be bundled with XT cards. The ability to regular users to overclock automatically without voiding warranty is huge. We take it all for granted, because it's not tough to mod a card and overclock it with third party drivers. The new XT line will have a variable fan and 3.8 drivers built-in for overclockers. This is not a big deal with the 9800 XT but will be huge on the 9600XT.

A nice post TKS, some points I agree some I disagree.
But as i said earlier, I've had my say, and am gona leave it at that.
"" Society is to blame ""
I cant see overclocking becomming completely mainstream.
Consider the following circumstance:
Dad gets new video card for kids
Kids read a bit aobut overclocking.
Kids try some nieve overclocking, setting the speeds to insane levels and burning out the card.
Unless the OC levels are limited to "safe" levels.
I dont like the idea of the audible fan... the heatsink also looks of a less than optimal design. Hopefully retail versions are better equipped.
As my sapphire R9800pro can do at least 429Mhz core with a stock aluminium cooler im suprised they didnt do better with the design.
