Forum Graphic & Displays : Graphics Cards - DOOM ]|[ 'Requirements' Posted
<A HREF="http://www.warp2search.net/article.php?sid=13092&mode=thread&order=0" target="_new">Warp2Search</A> has posted some 'speculative' d3 requirements. I'm surprised that they would say it has a 'minimum' of a 9600Pro as the 8500 and 9000Pro would be close to the GF3ti in performance.
I have a lot of trouble believing that the minimum requirement would be such a high end card, since it was supposed to appeal to more users from what everyone has said. I would think an R9600Pro class card would be well above the minimum and closer to 'standard' (or as most people call it, Recommended). I also find it funny that they actually put the GF4ti alongside the R9700/Pro, when the R9500Pro is clearly a better suited card, and the 9700 owns the GF4 in all the previews (optimized for Nvidia hardware).
I wonder if they are baseing their assumptions/'speculation' on those early reviews/benchmarks, which really didn't tell us much/enough.
However where does my CPU (XP2000+) fit in, it's not quite 'standard' and it's well above 'minimum'. I guess it's sub-standard, what a pitty! I guess AMD doesn't have ANY Cpus that will fit their 'optimal' category! Damn Intel!

# Speculative DOOM III System Requirements:
Minimum:
# CPU: 800MHZ ~ 1GHZ
# GeForce 3 TI / ATI 9600 Pro
# 256 MB RAM
Standard:
# CPU: 1,7GHZ ~ 2GHZ
# GeForce 4 TI 4400/4600 - ATI 9700/Pro
# 512 MB RAM
Optimal:
# CPU: 2,5GHZ ~ 2.8 GHZ
# GeForce 5800FX/5900FX - ATI 9800 Pro
# 786 ~ 1024MB RAM
I also like the 256mb of RAM, I have a feeling that 1GB of the PC 133 (what would be running on the .800-1Ghz) would pale against 256mb of PC2100. Oh well.

These requirements have been dicussed on quite a few forums. 99% of the people discussing it agreed that the requirements are false.
It was a good laugh though
Exactly. There's no way. But it was worth a look, and we might be able to cadjole people into buying more gear (thus reducing the price for the rest of us [as long as supply is good]).
I think the minimum will likely be a BIG RAM MX, and an R9000/9200 (lower than the 8500/9100) perhaps even a big mem. 7500, and then go from there.
I WOULD like to see the game released by August like the mention, but even that I think is a WILD exaggeration.
I am planning on an upgrade, just waiting 'til sept. for the Athlon64 and the Dothan (and the ATI mobo) to help me decide whihc direction to go. Especially with the news of a new P$ board from SIS that will have PCI-EX. Lots to come in the fall, just like last fall.

Wow, I'm not so sure the "optimal" needs more than 512MEG of RAM with XP or more than 256MEG with W98SE. Once you get more memory than that the system can actually run SLOWER, and I'm not even getting into older motherboards that can't CASH more than a paltry 128MEG or less.
So, I'm agreeing with you that most people will be able to run DOOM III just fine on a 1GHz or better card with a Ti4200. If you don't have a card at least this good, dig the money out of the couch cushions and get one. The price is right around $100.00. Half Life will Auto adjust to fit your card, and I'm sure DOOM III will too.
heya all;
I dont know about you guys but i dont play UT2003 on shiz mode, i play it on holy shiz mode, i dont want to play doom 3 on anything less then holy shiz mode either.
doom 3 is going to kick the shiz outta our machines, remember when Quake3 came out it took a state of the art machine to run it at 60FPS or more, thats how doom 3 is going to be, you might get decent frame rates with the toys off but crank it up and your computer is going to get shanked cold blooded, i think those recommendations are right on the money, doom 3 is gonna pwn your shiz.
Some of you may not have owned a computer long enough to have played Quake 3 when it first came out, your about to find out why John Carmak is god.

Basically currently Doom 3 will rape any machine right now~~~ when people starting getting 10000+ in 3Dmarks 2003 is when Doom 3 will be raped by machines

I'd get a nVidia GeForce FX 5900Ultra... if i had the money and if THEY WOULD CHANGE THAT #()#@ HSF
Take that with a grain of salt. To run it nicely, though, I can only imagine you would want a nice, expensive card. I'm hoping that the 9800pro will drop in price enough by this fall.
I recently got the Doom 3 alpha.
Here are some screenshots.
This using the high detail config file, 1024x768, no AA, no aniso.
It slowed down ALOT though if a character got right in your face and you shot him. The alpha is pretty buggy (obviously).

Thank's to the screenshots Willamette provided, I'd like to direct your attention to the horrific mipmap banding that the ATi cards have been noted as rendering in DoomIII.
Blurry textures where ever the character isnt directly looking. It's ATi's vender specific Arb path for this game.
Looks a little poopy. <A HREF="http://www.dodstudios.net/uploads/uploads/Willamettedoom3.gif" target="_new">http://www.dodstudios.net/uploads/uploads/Willamettedoom3.gif</A>
Im sure by release Carmaks team of merry men will have it polished up real nice, i wouldnt worry about it.
I dont think there will be much difference in rendering between an Nvidia and ATI card at that point, infact they stated they were working primarily with the ATI GPU to get the game engine optimized, they already knew how to work their magic with the Nvidia brand as Quake 3 was optimized primarily for the Nvidia GPU.
I have a feeling you guys will be more then happy with the results.
one thing to remember is in the style of John Carmak, it doesnt matter what machine you have his game will pwn it, he is always one step ahead.
The alpha really wasnt a good indication of the graphics of the finished product, infact im betting that what we have seen so far will pale in comparasin with what we will see when the game is released, our machines are gonna be blowing chunks on it, and i cant wait.
I have been kinda sick of being able to play anything out there with max details with no problem, it doesnt give me any incentive to upgrade, so i just say to myself i will wait a little longer, cuz why upgrade when you dont have to.
most of us meet the Optimal requirments and will be fine upon release, but we wont be able to play it at max details without chunking.
Like for instance my CPU and Ram meet the requirments just fine but i will need a faster graphics card without question, with my current system i will be lucky to get 30FPS at max graphic details, and i have a p4b 2.4Gz, Asus P4G8X-Deluxe, 1GB pc3200 at 2-2-2-6 in dual channel mode, Asus v9280S ( ti4200 superfast 8XAGP 128MB) which by todays standards is no slouch, however doom3 is going to just totally rape my computer.
I will definately have to upgrade before i can play that game at the quality levels it was intented and that i enjoy playing at. its kind of depressing considering i just built it 6 mos ago, and its already inadequate for the games comming out in the third quarter of this year.
People like to quote the minimum requirments and think thats good enough, but what the hell is the point of playing the game if your not going to play it as it was intended, you gotta max the graphics details to enjoy it the way Carmak intended.

I wont buy any game that needs more than 512mb ram to run smoothly on max settings. Its only just become normal to need 512 megs to run software and already we need more ??? If any game needs more than 512 megs then its just an indication of how crap the programmers are.

I have to say the sys reqs announced are no exxageration according to my experience with the alpha.
I played the alpha on two systems.
not to mention the weaker one but the strong system still had some hitches like when the sliding door animation was meant to be rendered just when a monster was waiting behind the door to jump towards you.
this two rendering jobs made the game pause alittle even for an intel 875 chipset Mb with a 2.08 Ghz P4 512 Mb ddr400 dualchannel mode and a gfx 5800!
so i think the hige amount of ram mentioned to run the game at full quality aint no joke.
(the game was set to highquality at 1280*1024 res and everything else at it highest.

No, this was not leaked on purpose.
Yes, we are upset about it, and it will have some impact on how we deal with some companies in the future, but nothing drastic is going to change in terms of what support is going to be available.
Making any judgements from a snapshot intended for a non-interactive demo is ill advised.

maybe some of u know about this and ita little old news but i found it interesting to mention.
link is here:

I think the reason sys reqs seems a little nvidia optimized
gets back to the leaking issue considering the rumors that the alpha was leaked by an ATI corespondent at the activision E3 booth.
guess this is (dealing with some companies) in carmack's terms, not quiet lifting support from ati cards but optimizing the game for nvidia cards.
seems fair i guess.

Like the Carmack address note, the fact you judged this game's performance based on an alpha that isn't even A DEMO, means you are full of it. Don't even think for one second just because a badly coded alpha that has a bug on doors with enemies behind them with a script to attack you means it will lag on any high-end system with the final code.

As I said before, judging any card's graphics rendering and performance in the alpha is foolish at best. It can't mean a thing. The game will have better graphics and will be coded properly. The alpha, is, how can I say this, even more premature than anything possible. It's like if I opened 3d Studio max, played around, made an unfinished level, did not do many scripts, set some characters, did not enter music scripts, nothing else, but to test my game, in its earliest possible incarnation.

NO! NO I DO NOT! Don't ever Tell me whatI mean!
Ooops, I mean, actually I stated what my current feelings/opinions are, let me rephrase it to allow you greater comprehension of my decision process.
I'm interested in either an Athlon 64 (been waiting since LAST spring/summer when the speculation began [release by Q4 '02 or Q1 '03, SURE!]) or whatever the current Intel offering will be (using the ATI mobo with the nice feature of non-disabled IGP); OR if the Dothan with a Mobile Radeon 9600 is availible from IBM/DELL and not as expensive as a small import, then I may go that route. I'm interested in both, but I'll wait 'til I see them (or their reviews) to decide.
IF I can play D]|[ and HL2 on a Laptop with 'good' Res. then that would be very nice as well. My current P][ 366 Thinkpad with shared neo magic video just won't cut it I don't think.
Anywhooo, that's what I meant. Sorry it wasn't clear enough for SOME.

Bah, I still believe the Prescott will be the real deal. At 3.4GHZ with enhanced Trace Cache and L2, as well as more core enhancements, this thing is likely to beat the A64, and offer so much. IMO you should add this to the wish list.

The fact that you consider;being suddenly surprised by a monster hiding just behind a door; a "BUG",shows you are full of it and you didnt get the point of that.no that was not a bug that was what doom3 is supposed to be: scary and horrifying but that particular moment needed so much amont of data being transfered simultanously that the system i mentioned above was all good at it except for lackin 512mb extra ram,and thats bcuz it was set to high res and highquality.

Lol!, I thought you had a better notebook then me!
Mine's a VAIO PIII 600 speed-step with Neomagic Magicgraph 256AV
Wanna compare 2DMark scores?
No, not really. I know they both suck.
BTW it's the same Neo chip (mine uses all of 2.5mb of memory, and you?) Funny thing is I did list it in my list of rigs during your last poll/survey. Did you forget sooo soon? Aww I'm hurt!
I did have a better Thikpad (PIII-900 w/ 16mb rage mobility) before but I sold it to a co-worker thinking I would get another one last fall. However I got new ski stuff instead. And thought, ahh I have the other one for now.
In any case I like mine, and considering it mainly acts as a webbrowsing unit that I can carry around the house (with WiFi) it doesn't really NEED more power, but since I'm spending more time on the night shift at work (to accomodate school) I'd like something that will let me game a little more so I can spend less time talking to you guys!
I'm kinda hoping that there will be a cheap version of the DELL dothan/9600, since I have a feeling from what I've seen of late that I will have to choose something other than IBM since they seem to only put the 'good' graphics chips in their top of the line models. And $5,000+ CDN ($3,500US) is a litle much for what will essentially be a portable gaming/dvd unit. Especialy since most of my portable computing can be handled by the palm-enabled Kyocera phone, including 512mb for MP3s and stuff.

I'm not discounting the Prescott, that's why I said that the ATI mobo is in there with the P4 of the day (likely Prescott), however I have high hopes and good feelings about the AMDs (likely on a Gigabyte or ASUS made Nforce3 board in that case) and like I said I will wait for the reviews to help make my decision. However once again ski season will be fast approaching and $1000 ski pass and then the lure of new gear will be in the mix, so there better be compelling reasons to upgrade other than 2 fps in some games and yahoo synthetic benchmarks to pimp out. I'd like to upgrade (because I also like the idea of a more flexible platform with SATA and other little advantages, but I may wait for PCI-EX even. Anywhoo, it's all a long way from now it seems, and I just got my <A HREF="http://www.out-there.com/rtl_abaf.htm#30" target="_new">Abominable Sports</A>, and <A HREF="http://www.mountainmagic.com" target="_new">Mountain Magic</A> catalogues, so AMD and Intel better send me a catalogue quick! Grape...I knew that you had a notebook, I just didnt remember the specifics on it
I really have no use for mine, I dont have WiFi, and it doesnt game at all. It does have a DVD player, which is it's only redeaming quality. Before I got it, I just thought it would be so awsome....alot like my game consoles.
I beg to differ on Quake 3 - I got it when it first came out and I have put it on all kinds of machines like Geforce 2 MX and even TNT2 M64 and it was programmed so well that it works superbly on most machines. And I'm not talking about low detail modes either.
Engines as good as Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament are licensed to so many developers because they scale very well to most systems and run with good detail levels as well. I think that Doom 3 will be the same.
I know that many people have been getting all worked up about their so called lowly PC specs and how Doom will sh#t on their systems but this simply will not be the case to anything like the same degree as people are making out.
Now obviously if you don't have a DX9 card then you won't be able to run it with full detail but it will still work well and will scale well hence the different code paths based on GPU detection. And those people trying to justify their extravagance by saying that Doom 3 will need 768 - 1GB of RAM are just kidding themselves. I mean come on guys - I remember the time when 128MB was loads and as many people know Win98 systems cannot make full use of memory over about 256MB anyway so to say that any system will need 1GB is ridiculous IMHO.
Well that is my 2 pennys worth. I say lets all relax and enjoy the beast when it finally comes out.
4.77MHz to 4.0GHz in 10 years. Imagine the space year 2020
when Quake 3 came out i built a new system just so i could play it, I owned it the first day it came out.
I built an Asus Cusl2, 512MB crucial pc-133, p3-1Ghz(Overclocked), Geforce 256(Overclocked), Seagate barracuda ATA-66 HDD, etc etc
i could play the game fine untill i cranked it up to max details, and then it chunked like i was running a diamond multimedia PCI card...ROFL
So dont tell me what it can and cant run on with Max details, i know what it can and cant run on because i was there.
XeeN
It was my bad when I didn't specify the lag caused by the "monster behind a door" script. I didn't mean that the script itself is wrong, since I know very well what D3 is about and I did have the Alpha.
You are still wrong, you judge the Alpha as being definitive. Why not just run to the store and go upgrade your whole comp just for that? Fact is the Alpha was leaked when it had NO readiness for the public, I made an analogy about it in a previous post. Nobody should interpret a single thing out of it! It's all bugged up, full of jam scripts.

Man I know what your saying there. I don't ski, but I race sleds all winter long. Now that the days are starting to get shorter, I'm getting the feeling like I do every fall, The Need For Speed. I can't wait to be thundering down the trails on my Arctic Cat. Got me going this morning Grape!!!!! Starting to look at parts & clothing for the upcoming season. Ah, lake racing, trail riding, snow bunnies in the bars!!!! One of these days I'm coming to Canada & taking on those trails. For now it's the U. P. Gods other winter wonderland, well it's called the Great White North up there. Shakes head, takes a couple of deep breaths, tries to calm down & wait for the snow to fly.
Don't get me going!!!! LOL
Sorry for being off topic, but couldn't resist!
Honey, what's that smell? Don't bother me now I'm working on my computer! OOPS!
How is it again that the leak was ascertained to be ATI's fault? I think the leak is Carmack's fault for even letting the code get out of his realm of control, period. He should have kept it closed tighter than fort knox. I work on projects all the time that, if found out, can compromise my coworkers, my company, and in some cases, the lives of civilians and military alike. I have a top secret clearance for a reason....I don't compromise information. If Carmack and his company were smarter, they would have been much much more careful. Ahh hell though, let's blame ATI anyways...it makes more sense...afterall, they are the devil right?
"You leave that 9800 Pro alone Bobby Bouche, ATI is da devil!!"
"No momma, I like fps! and it showed me its boobies...and I liked em!!"
Ok, enough...I'm laying off the caffeine.

ROFL!!!!
It's my thread, what do I care if you're off-topic? Anything dealing with Sno-Sports is NEVER off-topic with me. I've got an Ski-Doo MXZ 583 sitting at the cottage (not getting MUCH use while I'm out WEST), had a Blizzard before that. I'm not a BIG snowmobile fan, it's more of a means of transportation for me (a VERY FUN means). My cousin liked to ski-doo alot then switched to Quads because of the limited use [Quads go great in snow])
If you're gonna ride trails I highly recommens the one's in Ontario. There's actually a trail That cuts ALLThe Way from just outside Ottawa to Thunder Bay (going through North Bay (where my cottage is) And with some fancy (read somewhat iffy legal status) riding you can actually go 99% approved trail riding from Quebec City to ThunderBay.
I'm not a big trail rider just use it for Forkin' around on the lake and to get from one cottage to another (my parents have one on each lake in North Bay) and to visit friends (quicker than car [no speed limits on the lake]). However also this year insurance has gone WAY WAY up. It's now on average about $1000+ CDN (about $725 US) just to insure your sled for the winter (only 4-5 month of good lake riding). It's nuts!
Anywhoo, yeah it's funny you should mention about jonsing to go back. Out here our ski season runs to mid-May (starts Oct/NOV.), and it was just 3-4 weeks ago I looked at a friend from/at work and said 'You know Lake Louise has their Ski passes on Early bird special now, eh!' And he said, 'don't tell me I know.' And we both said almost in unison 'Can't Wait! UmHum, can't wait.' We've been talking about it ever since.
Also doesn't help when you can see the snow-caped mountains from your apartment and from work!

There ya go, you had to do it.
I'd love to have that type of season around here to look forward to. My season usually starts somewhere around xmas & ends in Mar. for me. I'm not one of them that has to ride in April, tear up a set of Hyfaxes, just to say I rode in my shorts on April XX. Last season we didn't get good riding snow until almost the end of Jan.
The guys I ride with & talk to have told me how good it is up there. I just haven't been up & tried it yet. You know, once bitten, well. I'm so spoiled I can't ride in the lower as it is. They say you've got express ways up there & no congestion. Believe me It's been tempting me for a few years now. I'm afraid that if I did ride up there I wouldn't want to ride any other place. I'm already 6 hours one way from Munising where I base out of.
We all ride Cats. When we're trail riding we usually put on 100 miles a day min. It's not unusual for us to ride 120 to ??? a day & we don't usually ride after dark. I've put on 1,000 miles on my sled in less than a week before, many times. I ride a 500 with EFI. My son rides a Widow Maker we call it, a 800 Xcountry EFI. That is one wicked sled. To much sled for me to handle. I let them boys fly & follow the snow cloud they put up. LOL
When we're lake racing I've put 60 to 70 miles a day on that way. Lake racing is a blast, nothing to be worried about. Usually there is a drag strip laid out, but I'm not into that. I'm studded & all, but for the trails. Those boys get it on & can eat my sled for lunch. Cool thing about lake racing is the bars all around the lake. When your trail riding there're town to town. Don't drink much on the sleds trail riding, takes to much out of you & it's intense riding. May be 1 or 2 beers for lunch. Lake racing is a race from bar to bar & it is a race from the time you light up the sled until you shut it down. Biggest thing to worry about it the ice fishing shanties.
Yea insurance & fuel, WHEW. Not a cheap sport. I know of no other motor sport that you can get that much speed out of without getting in real trouble though. Most time's we're above 80 MPH. My sled will only do 100 MPH tops. My sons, we have no idea. We can't find anyone to keep up with him to tell us how fast it will go. He's got a mechanical speedo & it only goes to 100 & is buried most of the time. Had a Yamaha Viper that thought he could tell because his speedo is digital. Well my son ran off & left him at 117 MPH. I've never had so much fun in the winter in my life. All of my vacations seem to be in the winter for sure.
I have read about your winter sport from your posts. It always gets me going. I sure love the winter. Now that you've got me going today. I'm going to have to go out & lift the trailer cover & give my baby a loving pet. Let her know she's not forgotten out there, & will be able to play soon enough.
Some topic for the middle of July Huh?
Honey, what's that smell? Don't bother me now I'm working on my computer! OOPS!
I agree with you eden.
The numb nutts in this forum are comparing an alpha to a yet unfinished game. And judging performance from that.
Get a *uckin clue !!!
That's like eating banana's that are not ripe, and saying the whole crop is bad!

Shut up.
Agreed, this looks better, but still SPECULATION

Hmm in an Anandtech sneak preview of the official pre-release benchmark of Doom3, the flaghip card from Nvidia, the FX 5900 Ultra was able to run at 1280x1024 with details set on medium at around 70FPS, with no anti-aliasing, anistropic filtering, or texture sharpening.
I suppose thats decent, but their pre-release demo didnt allow any customization of the graphics engine AT ALL other then low, medium, or high, and even the generic "high" setting is never the highest the graphics detail will go.
I dunno guys it doesnt look good, i think all of us are going to be in for a shock on just how weak our hardware really is, despite our pride on how bad ass we think our systems are, they arent going to be enough to play the game the way John Carmack intended, when the game releases its time to get out your wallet boys.
Here is the benchmark from Anandtech...

That preview is "old", we've seen the fps graphs like last month?
It doesnt matter that the benchmark is a month "old", the benchmarks arent any less relevant now then they were then. its still the same hardware we are talking about "today", nothing has changed heh

You shut up, my opinon stays the same!
I believe however, that the test:
1)Originated from an incomplete game, hence not completely optimized
2)Is a timedemo, i.e. the kind that stresses a card a lot. If that were the case, you can expect MINIMUM FPS of 40-50FPS in such system, if the game used a stressing timedemo. Sadly it is in medium settings as well, which downs the hopes. Expect 20-30FPS minimum I guess.
Again, we must be patient and let the master at work, focus!

No, you shut up. Your oppinion is stupid
I <b>help</b> because <b>you</b> suck.
Absolutely, infact they stated the drivers werent optimized, niether was the code, so it could stand to gain some performance in the final release version with finalized drivers for sure, i think it will definately pick up a good 10fps, i hope im wrong and it runs better on lesser systems at max detail, but i dont think it will, guess we will have to wait....i hate waiting, i have waited long enough -=P~~~

Yeah, and have to navigate around those who wish to talk hardware. Silly! Had a snowcone the other day though. Mmmm Snow fix!
Yeah, I'm familiar with the 'break the sound barrier' days, I used to race around cottage country in my mom's 300ZX. MMmm 155MPH on an open stretch of 4 lane highway at 4am. Nothing better. I know my cousin used to just kill my sleds (he always bought as fast as he could ge) he had a VMAX that used to EAT my Ski-doo every time, he hated having to 'throttle back' so we could ride together, and whenever we approched home/cottage he'd gun-n-run straight in and be stowed before I even made shore. He's got a newer one but I don't remember the model (still Yamaha though).
We used to occasionally puddle-hop across long strips of open water (especialy near shore where an error meant only 1-2ft water [still had to have it serviced though]). Always looks awesome and reminds me of Seadooing (one of my other fav. pastimes on the lake [along with windsurfing]). MY cuz once got a good 200+ yards of full throttle floating. I still haven't sunk one yet, but then again again I tend to be more conservative than him, he risks it more the closer he is to retiring his sled to his dad.
I do miss it though, out west here it's nowhere near as popular as out east. And there are no lakes to really speak of (not like Ontario).
I do recommend that if you get the chance, try some of the trails in Onario, they are, without exageration or braggadocio the BEST trail system in the world. Yes it is like a highway (complete with OPP to arrest you too [so bring a radar detector]) people love doing it and farmers (like my other cousin's father in law) open their field in winter so the trails can cut across to be continuous from one end of the province to the other. Truely special.
Although I'm definitely more a lake rider where I can drag/use an inner tube (or O'neil SeaDoo ring) or skis and snowboard around on the back. Long trips don't attract me except going from one lake to the other (one on each side of North Bay) and knowing that there is someone's ottage there full of beer to crash at for the night.
Oie Can't Wait for Snow! And it was Frakin' 33C today! Argggh!
Can't wait for X-mas, going home again and then the partying begins!

As much as one would LIKE to say that they have right now a competent enough card to run with alot of the stuff turned on, it says alot for the future of gaming and graphics cards if it does over-tax current top end cards, it means we have stuff to look forward to and a new standard/bar for the card makers to aim for.
Hopefully it will be very playable with a GF2 or R8500 with most detail turned off (especially shadows), but also hopefully it has some serious effects that will come out once you have the computing power to run them.
I also hope that it is MAINLY VPU/GPU dependant and not main system dependant, as most people already have enough power to do their day to day chores with an XP2000+ or P4 2.4 and 512mb or Ram, it would be sad to have to upgrade $2000 i gear to just play a FEW games, when it would be nicer to simply pay $500 every 1-2 years for the VERY BEST card which did all the tough work. I think that would appeal to more people than a complete re-working of their rigs.
Like I said before shift the load to the card and leave the CPU to do things like AI, Maping, and communication. I'm sure many would disagree, but that just my position on it. That's one reason I was such a fan of the VPU/GPU-centric nature of 3Dmk03.
I any case, I'm sure I'll be fine to play all the new games, I'm just interested in seeing what goodies are revealed, that currently hide beneath the surface, once I upgrade.

This is exactly my fear as well and why I am no excited in today's cards.
I look at the benchmarks lately, done on the best of the best of P4 systems, and I'm like: Oh my god, they can't even do 60FPS minimum!
Back in the Voodoo days, pop the card in, you get instant max FPS at ALL TIME!
Nowadays cards which SUPPORT new technology won't go do much. Games that are badly optimized come out with bad results as well, making gaming a hard thing of today. It's a damn shame, and I'm afraid of upgrading now, for fear even a new card will have trouble playing them new games. Look at RTCW Enemy Territory FPS results on websites, it just doesn't seem fully smooth. I have an XP1600+ and am not upgrading any soon. My Ti200 needs to go, but I dunno to what I will go to, if the benchmarks reveal weak performance in any game! And it's true!
"sigh"
Oh Glide, wherefort art thou!

You've waited this long I have one thing to say. WAIT for the PCI-EX enabled cards with the AGP adapters to come out at the end of the year (there should be reviews by the time doom is actually on shelves). Either the RV380 or R420 should be KILLER cards (definitely the R420), and even if they get stomped later, they should be able to pull back-up duties on another PCI-EX channel (channel 5 with Suzy as the weather girl! [ooops sidetracked]) so they won't be completely useless.
If you can wait that long, maybe I'll even sell you my R9600P for $100CDN and a Bubba!
I'll probably get the R420 or RV380 within the first week just so I can beat GW's 3Dmk01/03/04 scores.
