Hi, Hopefully someone can help me with this problem. I just inherited a Sony Vaio(older PII) and its problem. When I turn it on and log into Windows 98, the screen goes black, I thought it shut down, but the power light is still on. I've tried opening it, cleaned it, updated video drivers but still doing it. I'm not sure what else is in the NOtebook cause it won't let me stay in windows long enough
Has anyone had this problem, or know whats causing it, and can it be fixed?
any help to fix with be great, or does it sound like a boat anchor lol
thanks in advance

Have you tried an external monitor? If that works then it's probably your screen, which is not worth fixing. (too expensive)
You can of course try to see if its a lose contact or something minor like that.

Ps. How did you update the drivers without being able to work on it or see its specs?

EDIT:Disregard this post, it was definatly to early in the morning!

I reckon if you formatted it, you would solve your problem.

I'd bet my money that the backlight is burnt out. Unlike a CRT, an LCD screen uses a little florscent light to illiminate the screen. Replacing the backlight costs as much as a new notebook. Try connecting an external monitor to the notebook to see whether if its your laptop's screen or something wrong with the computer hardware wise (i.e. broken video card).

That was my first thought however when I read his post the secondtime I noticed this:

Therefore I presume that the screen was working before he logged on. That means that unless he hasn't been able to get the screen back on since, the screen is operational, maybe the settings (resolution ect) are set at a value that his screen/card doesn't support.

However it still beats me how he updated the drivers without beeing able to see anything.

Thanks for your replies. I'll try connecting an external monitor.
I guess I cut my first post short, was thinking it but didn't type it, sorry. The longest time the notebook stayed on, was about 1 hour, gaving me a chance to update the drivers. It would turn off and I would try again, till drivers, and windows were updated.
I guess by the sounds of it, I have a boat anchor.
thanks again
