I am about to get an NX73 and was wondering which memory chip is more
useful all round for multimedia. The Memory_Stick or Compact_Flash?

I am aware that for MP3 or sound from the CF I will need to use a
special CF driver or hacked media player...

Can I simply put MP3s or \ and Video (MPEG\DivX) on an MS card and
will they work (with sound) with third party applications such as
Pocket Tunes and TCPMC (Core Pocket Media Player)??...

..... Or will I also need a hack for the MS card like the CF card?

Which is the best MS to use? Pro? Whatever? (Not bothered about
security differences.)

Last question for now... Is there a shortened version of the CF memory
cards (like the shorter PD cards)?? <I'm wondering if a shortened
version may allow the back plate of the NX to be closed flat..)

Sure I'll have loads more questions soon :)

I did not have good results with CF in my NX-70. It worked but for some
reason the battery ran down very quickly. Finally gave up on it and went
back to memory stick. The two downsides on memory stick are that they cost
more and the socket is spring loaded so it will occasionally hurl one
across the room at an inopportune moment.

The practical difference between MS and MS Pro is that MS Pro comes in
larger capacities. I don't recall where the transition is offhand. Also,
the NX can't handle any kind of storage larger than 2GB.

If you are going to use CF, you have to have a memory stick in the machine
as well, otherwise it complains and misbehaves.

I have no idea what happens with TCPMC or Pocket Tunes--the Sony player
works fine so I've felt no pressure to change. There is however no special
driver needed on a Clie to access the memory stick--MS is Sony's
proprietary media, CF is the competition, so they don't include support for
CF for anything but WiFi.

Even if there was a smaller CF, there would be difficulty using it--many
devices that support CF have a button to eject the media, the Clie is not
one of them, so once inserted, such a CF might very well require
disassembly of the machine to remove. Disassembly of a Clie is not a
simple task--first you have to find a source for the proprietary
screwdriver that is required (lurkers, before you say "Torx", the screws
are _not_ Torx nor are they line-head or anything else that I've been able
to identify--they look superficially like Torx but they are 5-pointed, not
six).

Thanks for response J,

HeHe... Sounds like a toaster or my old floppy drive :)

I have a Treo600 with a similar accidental ejection problem. Filling
down the card to slightly below the surface solved that :)

Cost is not so bad these days at $80 or so via ebay.

I have looked at the Clie now that it came this morning.

I think without physical modification to the device inside & below the
cf door it will be almost impossible..

I'll keep my eye on the idea but probably a non starter.

As to removing a short card - a small piece of nylon ribbon 'super
glued' to the card can usually solve that if clearance in the slot
allows.

I have one on order from Hong Kong (ebay seller "elvisfong" ) for $8...
I'll report back here if it works.

Anyhows. Thankyou for response. After much thought I think I will get
as large a MS Pro as possible for now and later add a large CF as
swapable media as my little DV camera also uses CF.

Cheers

I guess you _can_ find _anything_ on ebay <grin>. Thanks for that heads up.
