Hello...I have a $1000 budget and am looking for a reliable and durable travelling notebook rig that I will use for Word Processing, web access, and financial reporting. I hope to buy an Intel CPU near 2.2-2.4 Ghz, 512 Mb DDRAM, CDRW, 32 Mb ATI or NVIDIA video card, >40Gb 7200 rpm HDD, >865 chipset, 15" display, 4 hour battery life, <8 lbs wt, 1.44FDD, and 1-year warranty. Please let me know what URL's will show candidate notebooks with these specs. Thank you.

Seems your budget is going down =)

However your question is to vague if we were to answer it this post would become a pissing contest.

So check the major manufacturers first (google can help), another thing is that the price depends where you live (europe america....), in holland acers are relatively cheaper than dells than they are in america.

So chack manufacturers websites for what you want, or check ebay.

to help you a bit:
It will be difficult to find a 7200 rpm HDD in a $1000 laptop
4 hour battery life is hard to find in a non centrino laptop

good luck

Life's a joke and so am I

agree with toxicogen...

i think your best bet - at least in US - is to pull out the Sunday ads and see BestBuy/CircuitCity/CompUSA etc... and see where there numbers are at and what you can get a notebook for. They usually have $1000+ notebooks on there with their rebates etc... Now, will they have all that you ask ... I don't know about an 865 chipset or the 7200 rpm drive or 4 hr battery life ... but that's what I'd do. And, most likely, those would be the HPs/Compaqs, Toshibas, Sonys that those guys carry among others and their web sites would be good starting places.

here's a quick <A HREF="http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=cat01174&type=category&_DARGS=/site/en_US/catalog/fragments/product/olslinelistingsortfilter.jsp" target="_new">search @ bestbuy.com</A>

You can get the same amount of battery life in an AMD AthlonXP-M system as a Centrino, and it is cheaper. But you won't get better than M9 graphics (unless you get the Athlon64 MTR :P), and you may be able to upgrade to a 7200rpm HDD while just going slightly over ur $1000 budget.

Other than that, you don't have much choice.

With what you want for a grand, best bet is ebay. I'd be looking for those stuff if I have closer to a budget of 2 grand. Either lower the expectation... expect 30gb, 256mb ram, combo drive, celeron processor or bring up your budget.

Have to disagree with you on that:

PROCESSOR Mobile AMD Athlon™ XP-M processor
CHIPSET Via KT333
Screen 15" XGA+ TFT (1024x768)
Memory 2 SO-DIMM DDR SDRAM-PC2100 Sockets (2x256 MB)
VIDEO ATi M10 64MB DDR Dedicated videomemory
STORAGE CD Rewriter/DVD Combo
80 GB 7200rpm 8MB cache 2.5" HDD
Weight/Dimensions: 2.8Kg (including CDROM, harddisk en battery) 328 x 283 x 26 mm
Wireless lan

Price = 1316.60 euro's (ex. vat)

I agree it's way over the $1000 but you would be a bit hard pressed to get something resembling his specs anyway (well... on my side of the atlantic)

The system is configurable and if you "strip" it down to:

256MB
40 GB 4200 HDD
no wireless lan

you get a price of 985.00 euro ex. vat (subtract another 40 if you go with a cd-rom drive)

If all else fails: Read The Manual
