What irks me more, is the people who not only steal a piece of software, but then post asking for help when they have trouble with it. It was a common occurance when Windows XP came out

rofl!! exactly.
i'd say that's my biggest gripe on piracy, there are too many people nowadays that treat pirated software like trading cards. it's funny when you can pick out the guy who is running pirated software (at least on adobe's forums) they'll come and ask a question that either:
a. common sense could tell you
b. it's in the first 10 pages of the manual.

What a skillfull programer can do is write a program that immiatates the security chip, intercepts any requests, and sends back the appropriate OK. It won't be easy, but it is possable.

Look at Windows XP's licence number generator. A small program can generate legit keys for instaling Windows XP, which was suposedly uncrackable. The funny part is, it uses a windows DLL file to figure out if it's a legit code.

If ignorance is bliss, then why is everyone so miserable?

This whole topic got sideswiped and now is about how piracy is wrong, a subject that has been beat dead thousands of times. Yes it's illegal, it's wrong. Speeding is illegal, so it's wrong. If you get caught, you get a ticket. Sure in the hell doesn't stop speeding though does it? The technology is already there to eliminate speeding, but I don't see a push for it. What am I talking about? I'm talking about a rental car company, possibly Alamo, but I'm unsure, fines drivers if their rental goes over 80 for more than 20 or 30 seconds. All their cars have a tracking chip in it hooked to satellites, and the chip sends a signal to Alamo (if it is them, I forget) and when you turn it in they fine you for speeding. It's perfectly legal because you sign a contract upon renting stating among other things, that they'll fine you for speeding.

Anyhow, the topic was about if they are going too far to stop piracy by limiting your control of your computer? There are other options, but then they'd miss the chance to get inside your home and business. Total lock-down of your system can't be the only option.

Of course you resolved your argument to personal attacks and insultes for no reason, and didn't even skim the actual topic of anti-piracy hardware/software.

If you are referring to my reply to STEALTHBIG, then you're sorely clueless because he specifically stated "<font color=red>You can criticize me all you want</font color=red>" which I gladly did. One can hardly be blamed for doing what was requested of them.

Alternatively, if you were talking about my reply to your rather sarcastic post, what do you expect when you carry such a snobbish attitude and combine it with an obvious lack of intellect? Further, if you actually read my response to that post you will see not a single personal attack. I questioned you, to which you didn't answer. I gave advice, which you obviously didn't take. However, not once did I directly attack your person.

As for the actual topic of anti-piracy hardware and software, I could care less about and much of this thread has not even been about. What I'm concerned are the morals and personal ethics involved as well as the legal ramifications, which, by the way, is just much a side of the coin of this topic as the specifics in hardware and software.

We all know the fact is I alone can't change anything and Americans as a whole would have to.

Do we? I disagree. One person <i>can</i> make a difference. This is especially true when one person makes a difference by motivating other people.

I also applaude the fact that you can quote the constitution, but then make references that are skewed and pointless.

Appearantly your ability to ascimilate information is as lacking as your abilibty to identify documents. The quote in blue was taken from the Declaration of Independence. And as for it's relevence, the point is simply that America's founding fathers believed that if a government no longer served the people that it foverned, then the people should overthrow their government. If America loses too many rights, I personally believe that that only way America will ever get them back <i>is</i> to overthrow the goverment, and more than likely by force. And those who don't have the balls to try and do this, should just shut up because there's no room to complain when you aren't willing to do anything about it. That's the difference between whining and rallying.

Yes the people downloading britney spears off the net are total crooks. Poor Bill Gates and his billions of dollars. Why do you defend them so much, being that you haven't achieved anything in life?

I defend them because they deserve the results of their work. Just as I defend Joe Blow down the street who wrote his little shareware program that registers for only five bucks, but everyone just cracks and steals anyway. It isn't about an in-depth comprehensive review to whom rights should apply. It's simply about that rights should apply to all, regardless.

You're a bully, and contribute nothing to these forums or society.

See, this is the difference between you and I. I don't directly insult anyone unless they specifically ask for it. You do. And if you think I contribute nothing to these forums or society, then you obviously are as blind everywhere else as you are here.

Med school? Oh please! Doctors are <i>the</i> most hypocritical people on this planet, short of perhaps politicians. And if your posts are <i>any</i> indication of your intellect, then you'll be lucky to even become a registered nurse or a medical transcriptionist.

nja469, are you <i>really</i> as stupid as you sound? Or are you just brain fried from too much studying?

Food for thought....
One time I went to buy a car from a local dealer. I got through test driving and picked out the car I wanted. The sales person asked me to fill out a credit report. As I was filling it out she told me to answer yes to one of the questions even though I told her the answer was really no. I asked her why and she replied that the credit company was more likely to approve my loan that way. I got up, gathered my things, and walked out. I walked out because the person I was going to buy a car from thought that being dishonest was OK. Would you buy a car from that person? I didn't. For those of you reading this thread that have or may have a job that places you in a position of trust, maybe you should reconsider the whole piracy thing. Sure, it may just be a little thing...but being dishonest about the little things makes it eaier to be dishonest about the big things.

Just because you're not paranoid, doesn't mean they're not watching you.

The other problem with the system is backwards compatability. If my chip is old and doesn't have this new technology hardwired in it, will it run this software that uses/requires it?

Are you going to require legitimate business people to upgrade their hardware and millions of dollars and thousands of hours moving to a new hardware platform so they can use your new version of X Software?

Of course, if it doesn't require the chip, then you realy haven't solved anything as it's easy to simply bypass it on the hardware level or software level at that point, or simply just not use a CPU that supports the feature.

If ignorance is bliss, then why is everyone so miserable?

LOL.. as I said you'd repost only attacking me further. I challenged you to a healthy debate that would deal with facts on the topic without personal insult, something that is obviously beyond your comprehension. You rather bully people and write inflated, redundant posts that are pointless and total garbage. Again your insults are rather childish for being as old as you are; I'm still 21, only partially through school and sadly well beyond your maturity level. I am not brain fried and will have no problem completing medical school, U of M in fact, one of the top ten institutions in the country. That comment was just another attack on your part to make yourself feel better about being white trash.

Nothing you said can be backed up. On the other hand we know you're trailer trash. Honestly, you must have nothing better to do with your life than to sit on your computer and trash people all day since their opinion defers from yours. Obviously, you had a hobby of computers, but since you have no ambition and are trash; you cannot afford to indulge into your hobby. I had a few friends review my posts and they concur that you're redundant and are far from comprehendible. Also they feel that you're the one lacking intellect and imagination. We all enjoyed the picture of an overweight, unattractive, loser in his trailer on your web page. You insulted me by saying I'm stupid and now I'm insulting you with the truth. We can back it up. We can log into your web page and see I am writing the truth. I bet it hurts, I hope it does. You’re a bully and most likely had a very rough and traumatic childhood since you have not matured, nor have you succeeded in your adult life.

You attack almost anyone who disagrees with you by writing huge redundant posts trashing them personally and barely covering the initial subject. Then, you do this over and over until they realize you're insane and give up, letting you, the immature adult get the last word. Again I implore you to get a job and make a real difference aside from sitting on your ass, most likely on government assistance fighting with people on a tech forum.

I’ll resell what I like when I like. There is nothing illegal about it. The whole piracy and resale deal only applies if I have the product still installed or made an illegal copy of it for myself. When I sold my windows 98se all that was required for the deal was the customer was aware I at one time used it, and was insured it was never copied and was not on a system .Words that came from my Microsoft rep threw my supplier. And since the license agreement clearly states one copy one machine (well in more words but who reads that damned agreement?) No one ever said I tested software either dude. I simply found no use to it any longer and passed it along the food chain. Meh pretty soon you’ll tell me I am not allowed to sell my old computer equipment because that would be cheating the hardware manufactures of another sale. I say phff and phff some more and some more phff as I shut down my comp and phff I leave and hell phff as I go home for good measure.

Computer chip maker Intel announced this week that upcoming processors would contain a new technology, code named "LaGrande," which would copy protect software, movies, and music. Intel didn't say much about the specifics of the technology, but -- according to a Boston Globe article -- did acknowledge that it could, and likely would, be used to implement digital rights management schemes such as Microsoft's controversial Palladium.
Privacy and consumer advocates such as the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) warn that measures such as the new features proposed by Intel could be used to limit consumers' ability to exercise their fair use rights, spy on their viewing habits, or otherwise compromise their freedom and privacy. EPIC cites one case in particular in which a researcher declined to publish a paper exposing security holes in an Intel copy protection scheme, for fear of being thrown in jail for violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

The last time Intel attempted to introduce such hardware (including a digital serial number that would allow software and digital content to be "locked" to the processor), users threatened to boycott the chips, or buy competitor AMD's products instead, to avoid a potential Big Brother inside. Within a few weeks, computer manufacturers had added a feature which allowed the BIOS to turn off the serial number at boot time. While Intel defended its action at the time, it later backpedaled, removing the serial number from its chips.

you guys are so paranoid. can someone point me to an article on privacy?

if your chip is old, then you're out of the loop dude.

the future e-business is kinda like this:

you go to company X website. companyX asks you if you're secure and legit. if you're a new computer (i.e. prescott), you'd say, "i'm legit dude, are you legit?". the companyX then says "yes". then you verify each other's info.

if you have an old computer.. you'd be kicked out door.

You went to school for a variety of programming languages, yet your own web page looks like a dreamweaver template.

Considering that I wrote 90% of the content of that webpage and did 100% of the layout from '95-'97, using only notepad, and self-taught myself HTML from a book, I'll take that as a <b>huge</b> compliment that it turned out to look like something just as professional the results of Dreamweaver. :) Thanks. :)

Of course were I to redesign the whole thing with what I know today, I'd be using a lot of dynamic HTML and server pages. Since the last time I tried Geocities won't let me host such technology, I just haven't bothered with a redesign. :(
