I am building a new system right now, here are the specs:
AXP 1900
256MB Kingston DDR266 ECC CL=2.0
Soltek SL-7DVRV4 (Purple Ray)
GeForce 4 Ti 4400 (VisionTek Xtasy)
Maxtor 40GB 7200RPM ATA133 HD
Antec SX1030 W 350W PS
Cendyne 24x10x40x CDRW
etc.
I just put this thing together, this is the first computer i have put together myself, and it boots up, and says
"detecting/searching for IDE devices", which i have 2 of. The HD and the CDRW. They are both plugged into the mobo using the proper cords, and both have power, and the jumper settings on them are right(i think). Neither of them is a slave, they both have their own separate chords. As far as i can tell, the mobo cant detect theses devices. I can get into the BIOS. The mobo does detect the floppy drive, and trys to read a floppy if i put one in. I need to load Win 98. But the CDRW wont open the tray. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED. Do i need to assign certain
IRQ numbers? Do i need to change the boot sequence/order? What SHOULD happen the first time i boot up, assuming everything is installed right? Should it ask me for an OS disc? I really dont want to take this to the local comp. store and pay like $100/hr to get it working. Pretend i dont know much about computers, and tell me step by step what to do. Thanks alot.

Okay, okay. In the Standard CMOS settings make sure under "type" that it is set to auto.

I can't think of a good signature so I'll use this one.

Well dude, to be honest it sounds to me liek u plugged in the IDE cable backwards on the Motherboard...try taking hte IDE cable off of your cd-rom totaly and only have power running to it,,,,than power on the system to see if the tray will now open.....if it works great, if not, than look a little closer cuz maybe u have a Slot Loasding drive where u only place the CD into the Slot and it excepts it in itself......

Its happened to me before where i plugged in the IDE cable backwards on the older style cable that doesnt have a notch on the top and when its plugged in backwards, the drive would not recieve power....try that, if that doesnt help, post back.......OH, alos try using a different power cable for the drive........maybe that'll help...

ALSO, make sure your Hard Drive is set to MASTER and that yoru CD-ROM is set to SLAVE......ok...try that out...

Also, make sure the IDE cables are in all the way. Sometimes if they aren't snug, they won't be detected. This may be a stupid question, but I have to ask: Did you connect the power lines to the devices?

Already did that, but thanks alot! I just figured it out anyways. This motherboard uses an AWARD bios. For some reason, AWARD wants the HD and the CDRW on the same cable, as master and slave, i had them on 2 cables.
But i still have one question, on this 40 pin 80 conductor IDE cable, going away from the mobo, there are two female plugs. When i plug the one at the end of the cable into the HD it recognizes it. When i plug the middle one into the HD it dosnt recognize it. I need to use the middle one with the HD because thats the only way the other plug will reach the CDRW. Can i change the master/slave config in the BIOS? Again any suggestions would be helpful. TY.

If that is the case, than u have the Hard Drive set to Cable Select (CS)...and u did it by accident, make sure 100% u have it set to Master and not CS....becasue its impossible from what ur saying..as my Hard Drive was plugged in as MASTER on its own on the MIDDLE ide port on the cable on my other board with a AWARD BIOS and it worked fine....therefore check the jumper settings, and after u check them double and triple check them......

You can't change the master/slave settings in the BIOS. Some HD's have a different jumper setting if it is alone or with some other IDE device on the chain. Make sure you have these jumper set properly.

???? no award bios doesn't need to have the cd rom and hd on master and slave. you probably have them on the same cable on the computer connected to a single ide connector on the mobo. if the two were on truly different cables on different ide connectors duel masters run fine.

if both drives are on the same cable one must be master the other slave. it doesn't matter what the drive is. but if the drives are on two different cables, connected to two different ide heads. then both can be master. but any other drive you connect to those cables must be in slave mode.

how do i know you ask? i'm running a asus a7v133 raid board. with four drives. two cd roms, two hds if i wanted to i can connect all of the drives to different ide connectors on my mobo. but of course i don't have enough cables for that. so my cd roms are on one cable. writer at master, cdrom at slave, and my hds are on different "channels" (ide connectors) due to the fact that one is ata 100 the other is ata 66. it's not award bios that must have one master one slave. that's only if there are still on the same cable going into the mobo.

Translation for those of you who can't read  :

DUDE, I know for sure that you are wrong, because I have my DVD as secondary master and my harddrive is primary master.

Some CD-roms and HDs have a setting for being the only drive on the chanel. You should be able to have them on seperate IDE chanels. Also, don't use Cable Select if you can. I've had problems using that mode on any IDE devices.
