I am curious as to what you people would recommend for a Athlon 1.4 GHz DDR solution. I do not want to have to overclock the mainboard in any way, so native support would be nice. Please list what features of the mainboard you prefer you like. If you could, also give the link to the manufacturer's page for the mainboard.
Second, what does the PCxxxx have to do with DDR RAM? Does this number limit it to certain mainboards? I am curious to this, as building a DDR system, I want the fastest RAM available for it. Certain mainboards it seems though, only take up to PC 2100. It would be greatly appreciated if you could give me any input on whether I can use this higher speed RAM and such, as I really want to be able to use the fastest their is; e.g. PC 2600 or 2400
Lastly, does anyone know how soon the nForce chipset will be available for Athlons, and what performance gain will I see if I use it. If you could list websites of estimates or alpha/beta boards, I would also much appreciate it.
As of right now, I am leaning towards the Asus A7A266.

The xxxx in PCxxxx refers to the maximum bandwidth (transfer rate) of the memory in MB, e.g. PC2100 is rated to transfer at 2,100MB/sec, or 2.1GB/sec. Memory can generally be underclocked, so PC2100 or PC2400 will work just fine if used as PC1600 memory. Aside from the 4-digit number, DDR memory also carries a CAS latency rating (CAS=Column Address Strobe) that refers to how long the memory takes to do certain operations internally. The lower the CAS latency, the better. Currently, DDR SDRAM has two CAS latency ratings, CAS2.5 and CAS2. As it stands right now, CAS2 DDR is generally no more than 10% more expensive than CAS2.5, so if you want the absolute fastest, you might as well get CAS2.

Note that only DDR SDRAM is described in this manner; older SDRAM is rated by its actual MHz (PC133 operates at 133MHz, PC100 at 100MHz, etc). PC133 actually has a maximum bandwidth of 1.06GB/sec, not 133MB/sec.

As it stands right now, there is no Athlon+DDR setup rated to use/require PC2400 memory. The best (non-overclocked) Athlon+DDR setups are Athlon-C's with PC2100 CAS2 memory. PC2400 memory is for people who want to overclock their systems, i.e. bump the system's FSB a bit higher than spec, or run CAS2.5 PC2400 as CAS2 PC2100. PC2400 might also be nice if somebody releases a future CPU rated to use it.

A little oddness--a few weeks ago, PC2400 memory was selling for less than PC2100 memory. Since PC2400 memory can be used as PC2100 memory just fine (see first paragraph), you might as well get PC2400 if it still costs less.

Right now, your best bet is to get PC2100/PC2400 memory and an Athlon-C processor. The A7A266 is based on the ALi MAGiK 1 chipset; while it's generally slightly slower than the AMD761 chipset, it has the advantage of not containing any VIA hardware (like the buggy VIA686B southbridge).

I would have to recomend the AMD 760 chipset if you want to get the full performance out of a DDR solution. The Via chipset, and the ali chipset just don't give the best performance for DDR ram. I currently own an Asus A7M266 which is rock solid, and good for people that don't want to overclock.
I currently read a review on a Chaintech motherboard that has the AMD 760 chipset and it uses a different southbridge than the Via one so it shouldn't be prone to the same rare problems.
This board out performs the A7M266 in many benchmarks which is nice to see, AND this board also features overclocking capabilities through the front side bus, and through multiplier adjustment.
But for a simple DDR machine your best bet is almost any motherboard with AMD760 chipset, and CAS2 DDR ram. I currently own a Tbird 1.33 GHz with A7M266 and Corsair PC2400 ram, and it runs PC2100 CAS2 very nice. For a tiny performance boost I run my memory at 136 MHz so I get a tiny boost in system performance and still run CAS2.

I BOUGHT AN FIC AD11 AT GPS COMPUTER SYSTEMS FOR ONLY $105. IT HAS DIP SWITCHES FOR THE MULTIPLIER AND VOLTAGE, AND COMES WITH THE AMD 761 CHIPSET. I GOT MY 1.2 (BOXED) ATHLON TO OVERCLOCK TO 1.33 BY SIMPLY CHANGING THE MULTIPLIER JUMPER AND SETTING FROM 9 TO 10. IT ALSO HAS A JUMPER FOR FSB 100 OR FSB 133. I WAS ABLE TO RUN THE CPU AT 1380 (138 FSB) BY RAISING THE VOLTAGE, BUT THE CPU TEMP GOT TOO HIGH, SO I CHANGED BACK TO DEFAULT FOR FSB AND VOLTAGE. IT HAS 2 DDR SLOTS. I ALSO BOUGHT KINGSTON DDR MEMORY, AND IT WORKS GREAT. YOU CAN FIND GPS COMPUTER SERVICES BY USING THE GOOGLE SEARCH ENGINE. YOU WILL NOT FIND IT LISTED UNDER YAHOO.
