Whew, reading some of this is a bit discouraging. I finally broke the
screen on my old Handspring Visor and thought I ought to upgrade
anyway. I used a character input Chinese dictionary on that thing
daily, written for Palm OS. I also am on a Mac OS 10.3.7. Palm says
Tungsten T5 is only for PCs. True?
Suggestions on other PDAs? I really dislike windows and don't want to
go that route.

T5 is not for PC only, I use a Macintosh and it works fine.

Cheers.

Where does Palm say that? On their specifications page
<http://www.palmone.com/us/products/handhelds/tungsten-t5/specs.epl> they
say "supported desktop system requirements": "Mac OS X, version 10.2.6 to
10.3 (Mac OS X also requires admin rights to install.)"

Should also work with a number of Linux applications, but that's supported
by third-party software.

Not true. The T5 runs quite well with a Mac.

My T5 also works reasonably well with MacOS 9.1. Problems in this case to
consider are:

1) You must upload the Palm Desktop from the Web (the supplied CD only
installs the desktop on MacOS X).
2) My first dozen hotsyncs caused a Fatal Exception error on the T5 that
could only be circumvented by a soft reset from the back. This problem has
since disappeared, perhaps because I removed an offending app left over
from my Palm Vx use. The Fatal Exception during hotsync problem also
stopped happening right after I installed BackupBuddy and did a backup, so
who knows.
3) Some files may still not sync right (Font databases from FontBucket
gave me problems).

Since your on MacOS X.3.7, you should not have any of the above problems!

unfortunately, I bought a T5 here in China and the CD that came with it
has NO Mac info. The Asia support people say to exchange CDs but I
can't find another one in this city. The PalmOne website says you can
download the desktop, but it is a dead-end--not that it won't download,
but they actually say there IS no download.
