I might consider upgrading my old Palm VIIx to a Tungsten E. But I
need some help first.

Questions

1) I have an old World Mac running OS 9.1. I do have USB access with
my PCI card, and am using Office98. Will such a unit work?

2) Can I transfer photos, videos, music, sounds and such back and
forth, or does this require a later os?

3) The website says this unit will work with my OS, but perhaps some
features will be missing.

4) I need a unit that can do color graphics, music, video, and be able
to record audio. Will the Tungsten E work?

Will the transition from the VIIx also work? I will need to transfer
all my data and programs. I know I will lose the Palm.net apps (which
do not work anymore anyways).

Thanks,

John

No. Office 98 will not work on the Mac. (Where'd that come from?!)

Otherwise, Mac OS 9.1 and USB access on a PCI card will work with the
Tungsten E and its version of the Palm Desktop.

Depends on the application and whether it runs on Mac OS 9.1.

OK. I'm running my T|E with Mac OS 9.2.2. (I'd recommend you upgrade to
that since it's the highest version of Mac OS 9 that will ever come out,
but check that it works with your Mac first.)

You need to be more specific. What do you mean by "do"? Are you willing to
buy peripherals, e.g., a microphone?

Some apps were not written properly for the Palm OS and may not transfer.
You should check with the developers. Otherwise, all "well-behaved" apps
should transfer over.

Oops, my bad! Office 98 for the Mac works on the Mac. For some reason, I
read "Windows 98."

But what has that to do with the T|E?

If you're asking about using Office 98 with Documents To Go, which is
packaged with the T|E, sorry, Docs To Go is Windows only.

There is a Mac version of Documents to Go. I even was able to switch a
licence from windows to a mac when I switched over at work. Check with
the Documents to Go people they were very helpfull.

You can use just about any Palm for your Macintosh, whether it is OS 9 or OS
x.

Documents to Go works on Macintosh, so do not worry there.

There are some concerns, some applications do not support Mac 9.

I recommend you look at the applications you want to use and see what it
supports.

Cheers,
PQ

I use a USB card with my G3 Powerbook and my TE and it works fine (os
9.1 or OS 8.6)

Sure, no problems and no special software needed assuming you already
have software that will let you make a .jpg on your Mac. Just use the
included "Photo" app on the TE to view them on the TE.

Use a Mac app called Kinoma Producer to change a AVI or Quicktime video
to paly on the TE using the Kinoma app for the TE.

You can use the software that comes with the TE for playing audio or
download an inxpensive commercial app such as PocketTunes (that's what
I prefer) and then you can change Quicktime audio to OGG audio and
hotsync it to the TE.

I use my TE with both my G3 powerbook running OS 9.1 and now with my
iBook G4 running OS X. I use Office 98 for Mac on both these computers
and use the Documents to Go software that came with my TE to put Word
and Excell documents created on the Mac, onto the TE. You can also
create them on the TE and transfer them to the Mac

The TE does NOT have an audio input port. It has a USB 'slave' port. If
there is a way to connect a microphone to the TE I am not aware of it,
although that does not mean that a way does not exist, I just don't
know of it.

Thank you. Perhaps I should look at the Zire or whatever model has a
built in mic and works in OS 9.1.

I was thinking PocketPC, but I have so many Palm apps and data. Been
using Palm since 2000.

Why do some Palms say OSX only then?

Because OS 9 has been obsolete (even though I still use it) for how many
years now?

The reason is that some applications sync with the computer, such as
SplashID, MarkSpace and etc... Some of them only work on OS X.

Of the 9 products currently sold by PalmOne, only 3 of them won't work
with Mac OS9 - the T5, Treo 600 and 650. [1]

IMHO, the answer to your question is related to the fact that these
are 3 of the newest Palm Products. Unlike other Palms, if you try to
download a version of PalmDesktop for them, you're either told to use
the one on your CD or you're asked for your serial number to download
a special version of PD for the Treo 600. They're "special".

The way the devices sync with the computer has changed, and unlike
Windows where both 98 and XP can run the same version of newer
conduits, making them available for Mac would require writing two sets
- one for OS9 and another for OSX. And Palm simply chose not to write
new conduits for an OS that hasn't been updated in 4 years.

---

[1] I know that the Tungsten C specs say it'll only work with OSX, but
there's a knowledge base article that says to upgrade to version 4.1
of Palm Desktop for Mac and it'll work.

what's wrong with using the ipod as your palm?

what about some of the newer phones out there - they sync up to
Entorage just fine for me (I've got a Sony T616)

No, data entry isn't very easy - but who cares. It keeps me on
schedule and has all the contact info on the phone.

Yes, I am still sending THREE GMAIL invites to anyone who sign's up and
complete's an offer... Heck, I'll even send you the $1.00 to cover
whatever you signed up for! There are many items that are FREE, and a
few that cost only $1.00. (Please email me to discuss)

It doesn't do anywhere near what a Palm device does.
