Hello.

I am trying to help someone in configuring his VersaMail for POP3 and
SMTP with SSL support. His school requires it SSL as of yesterday for
e-mail access with security reasons. I found out VersaMail that came
with his Tungsten C does NOT support SSL for outgoing e-mails (only
incoming e-mails) with SMTP server. POP3 access and download were fine
with SSL.

Since VersaMail doesn't have this SSL outgoing support, then I need to
find him another easy to use simple e-mail client that can handle POP3
and SMTP with SSL. It doesn't need be a fancy program, but it does need
to be easy to use since he is not computer and PDA experts. Free or
cheap price is preferred if possible.

Thank you in advance. :)

Hi,

I know free is nice . . . but if you want an easy, flexible and
reliable e-mail client for a Palm I would strongly recommend
SnapperMail. At $50US it is NOT cheap for a Palm program, but man
does it work. Once I got it configured it has been trouble free. I
tried a number of e-mail clients including VersaMail and Eudora and
am very glad I spent the money on SnapperMail.

I had a feeling that would be case (not free). I am used to open
source products and thought there would be a freeware simple e-mail
product for PalmOS 5. I don't own a PDA myself so I wouldn't know
much about programs in the PDA world. :)

I looked at http://www.snappermail.com/ and it seems like SSL is
only available for Premier and Enterprise versions according to the
FAQ: http://www.snappermail.com/wireless/email/faqs.cfm ... $49.95 -
$59.95 according to http://www.snappermail.com/store/ ...

I will put in my list as a possible product to buy. I see that the
free trial is 30 days and has SSL support. It sure looks fancy
(maybe too fancy).

Hi Ant,

I don't know that I would say it is to fancy, just feature rich. I
can do things like check my GoogleMail, work with Microsoft Office
attachments, have multiple accounts and more. Since I use all three
of the listed things every day, it seems like just the right balance
of cost vs features.

I user Chatter Email:
http://www.imchatter.com/products.shtml
Chatter Email is a powerful IMAP email client for the Treo 600/650, providing
true "push" email for users with compatible servers. All network communication
in Chatter Email is done asynchronously, meaning that email is received and
sent "in the background", so there's no waiting for connections to be made or
messages to be delivered. Chatter Email works whether you're actually "in" C
Chatter Email or in other Treo applications; while your Treo is "awake" and
while it is "sleeping".

Does that product support POP3 and SMTP? He does not need IMAP support.
Also, does it work with Tungsten C? It says Treo only.

Thanks Squirrel! [hands you a nut] :)

http://www.eudora.com/download/eud [...] readme.txt and
http://www.eudora.com/products/uns [...] /download/
say this product was last updated on 4/2001. Does anyone know if this
is safe to install and use in PalmOS 5 on a Tungsten C? I don't want to
hose the PDA and Windows XP Media Center SP1 (all updates). ;)

I also assume Eudora program is not required on Windows to use EIS. I
see the product is free (good thing). Lastly, I see SSL option for both
POP3 and SMTP (screen shots too) for
http://www.eudora.com/download/eud [...] IS_2.1.pdf (yes!).
However, since this program is old. Does anyone know what the latest
version of SSL is used today? I have no idea what versions most mail
servers with SSL requirements use. If I use this program, then I hope
I don't run into incompatiblities.

Thank you in advance. :)

Ahh. Yeah, he only needs it for email checking and composition.
Basically, quick e-mail checks without his computer/laptop. He might
have to get SnapperMail since the options are limited.

Here's a link to Eudora Internet Suite for Palm OS 3.0 or higher:
http://www.eudora.com/products/uns [...] rnetsuite/
It's no longer supported, and it's a free download. Description mentions
SSL in the first sentence.

I've used (and registered) their PC email programs, several versions
over the years. I prefer them to MS Outlook (at work) and OE.

Same here. Eudora is not plagued with the "issues" that seem to be
accepted with the use of Outlook.

John, Squirrel posted a reply about EIS as well. I asked him about its
compatabilities, but did not receive a reply yet. Maybe you or someone
know the answers? I copied and pasted from my yesterday's post:

http://www.eudora.com/download/eud [...] readme.txt and
http://www.eudora.com/products/uns [...] /download/
say this product was last updated on 4/2001.

Forgive me for not replying. I have not used Eudora on my Palm in a
few years... I keep a copy of it there in case I go out of town. I'm
still using a TRGpro so I'm a poor source of information with respect
to newer devices. I'm also a very-not interested person when it comes
to Windows XP. :)

You should have read the replies to the original posting. EIS has been
suggested by three people before you.

Versamail v2.6.1 supports SSL in both directions - works fine with Gmail.

SSL v3 or just SSL v2 (which recently has been found to have several
security flaws)?

Yeah, but the question is it safe to install and use in PalmOS 5. :) I
might get SnapperMail to be safe.

Yeah, but v2.6.1 doesn't work with other PDAs beside Tungsten T3 and E
models. The one I was referring was to C. It's not that old. :P

It doesn't? I thought it only was *supported* for T3 and E, but would work
on other devices too?

Did not blow up my Palm W with PalmOS 4. Not likely to cause problems with
your C.

Correct.

I can tell you it will NOT work with Gmail, more's the pity.

However, there are commercial e-mail clients for PalmOS which will.

Well, 5 is newer than 4. ;) I am hoping someone is using 5 or higher with
EIS!

Are those clients for Gmail free? I doubt I will be needing it though.

Uhh, please reread my reply. I said it only works for T3 and E models.
Other models, no way.

It *does* indeed work on several other PDAs. I gave you a chance to get out
of your error, but instead you chose to be rude. The net result is that you
made a fool out of yourself, cause your claim is dead wrong, even the second
time around. What's your basis for the "no way", by the way?

To clear up any confusion: Versamail 2.61 is *supported* on Tungsten T3 and
E models, but *works* on several other models.

Other models meant beside T3 and E are the only ones supported. That is
what I meant. I apologize if I was being rude. I wasn't trying to be
rude.

Hmm, this is confusing then:

From http://www.palmone.com/us/software/versamail26/ ...

Handheld Requirements
-Tungsten T3 handheld
OR
-Tungsten E handheld
-with approx. 1.5MB of available RAM

From http://www.palmone.com/us/software [...] 6/faq.html ...

What Palm handhelds does VersaMail 2.6 support?
VersaMail 2.6 supports only the Palm Tungsten T3 and Tungsten E handhelds.
It does not work on any other handhelds.

Does VersaMail 2.6 work on the Tungsten T2, C, or Zire 71?
No. VersaMail 2.6 ships with those handhelds.

Have you actually used the newest version with a Tungsten C? I don't
want to risk the chance of breaking the PDA. Remember, it is not mine
and I am still learning PDA as a newbie.

No, but I'm using it every day on a Sony UX50. The "auto-fetch every ..."
part doesn't work, but otherwise it works flawlessly.

In case anyone wonders, I've bought and paid for Versamail (twice, as Palm
doesn't sell upgrades for it), in addition to it being bundled with the
Tungsten E, and even though it's probably technically illegal to use the
2.61 version on the Sony despite all the bought and bundled licenses I have,
I am unable to feel bad about it.
