Hey, what's a good tool for checking for throttling? a friend of Mine has a S478 3.4Ghz Prescott, and the thing's hitting 80C.

He's recently been having a few - fairly minor - performance drops, whereby it just seems to hang there for ages and do nothing before coming back to life.

The only thing that's changed is that he's recently started doing a lot of video encoding, so is obviously stressing the system a bit more.

If I run MBM5 or CPU-Z on a P4 that's throttling itself, does it report a lower speed, or not? I would guess not, since the 'throttling' just consists of it skipping cycles - not actually going any slower.

Are there any other tools around to check for throttling?

The idea that a friend of chipdeath's has a scotty @ 80c is not about to cheer me up. It's actually depressing.

Reply to endyen

is he using the stock thermal goop on the HSF or thermal paste? perhaps take a look at the condition of the HSF and perhaps re-apply (remove the old goop first ofcorse) some thermal paste like arctic silver v and see how thing go.

Reply to apache_lives

Im sure ChipDeath would have never thought of that one. BTW, their is nothing wrong with the thermal material that intel uses. In fact its very good.

Iv heard its great stuff, im just a little sus how hard it is like if its moved or something it might work against it or not work as it should where as thermal paste is like a propper goo that can be reshaped and wont be bothered by the HSF being moved / removed.

Reply to apache_lives

FYI, the intel TIM becomes more pliable with heat. It is fairly self repairing, and has great thermal conductivity.

Reply to endyen

would you like fries with that, pops?

All i was saying is that it becomes almost useless when the hsf is removed since its been melted into shape and when you reinstall the hsf it wont work as well where as thermal paste can be reworked.

Whats the big deal anyway he wants help not BS arguments - instead of being SHT give someone some help pops.

It's not a PC I've built, or even had much input in. It's a Fujitsu PC that he got through a scheme at work. It was actually an OK deal at the time (basically around 50% off what the price should've been for those components).

Neither he nor I have ever removed the HSF, so I have no idea on the TIM questions. The HS is the same 'radial' design as the one scotty system we have here (at work), so I think it's the Intel stock one. If not, then it's some bulk fujitsu cooler (which would explain the high temp, even for a scotty).

He knows he needs to cool it down. He's going to get a new cooler come payday(end of this week or early next week). Probably an XP-120 or something in that league. He's also possibly getting a new case with better cooling (he could do a lot worse than an Antec P-160 like mine  ) So things will improve. He'll also have me helping for all that stuff, so he's well screwed now.

Anyway, he sent me a IM last nite when I wasn't about, but apparently he's run throttlewatch and it claims that Throttling is 100%. I thought that probably was 'ok', but having just launched it on my work PC (a P4C 2.8) I now realise it's not. Very not in fact. I'm suprised his house hasn't burnt down!

Ive seen temps drop 10c buy changing cases. Also, tell him to order a cheap notebook CPU fan. They are only a few bucks and will fit the NB. It gets hot also.

I know what a decent case can do. My temps have dropped loads now I have the Antec P-160. I used to get between 46 - 50C load with my Winchester @ 2.5Ghz/1.43V, but now get Max of 41-42C @ 2.6Ghz/1.46V. (2.7 may soon be on the cards... )

Will consider the NB fan idea, but since it probably won't be overclocked (BIOS had no options - will see if there's a non-fujitsu BIOS that does at some point) I'm not too concerned about it for the moment.

Oh, and being British, I have an excellent sarcasm-radar, so I picked up on the cooler comment. No Worries

I haven't played with VDD yet. IIRC my mobo/BIOS as it is gives me another .1V To play with.

The one thing I would like is more Vmem. 2.8V is currently max, and the board undervolts slightly so it's about 2.78 or so :frown: . Not sure if a new BIOS is available to fix this.

I haven't gone soft, but I have gone a little more lazy  .. I like to just use it normally for a week or more after passing all the 'normal' stability tests, before I push further.

Normal thermal paste, sure. Advanced stuff like the Arctic Silvers, to my knowledge, you'd be suffering if you reused them. The Arctic Silvers go through a setting process where the conductive molecules in the paste align themselves for optimal thermal conductivity. So should you try to reuse the paste after that, you've lost that advantage and might as well be using any cheap TIM at that point.

Well, he's basically decided on a Scythe Ninja Cooler and an Antec P180 case. Looks like a pretty good (if a little expensive) Solution. I'll need to tell him to get some fans too.

Here's a Review with this combo, if anyone's interested. I'll have to look into whether he'll have issues with routing the PSU cables properly though - I don't know how long his cables are, and his main 20-pin connector is up on the top-right of the mobo so it might be a stretch. He is intending to get a new PSU, but of course it'll be nice to get it working with his current one first.

Due to the 2 separated chambers in the case, I think it may be very worthwhile to switch the fans over, so the intake is at the back/top, and exhaust at the front (that way HDDs can be mounted in the bottom chamber with air flowing over them and out past the PSU). I'll test that I think. I know mozzy uses this config, but I've always preferred the 'classic' scenario, as the HDDs get the cool air first. With this case though, I can see it giving real benefits with no drawbacks.

I'll be interested in seeing the differences between the P-160 and the P-180...

On a side note, god all this green underlining shit is irritating. I might have to actually download the firefox plugin stuff to make it leave me alone...

Expensive, but stylish and sweet. I love Scythe. They're a pretty cool (all puns intended) company. For me it was a real toss up between the Scythe NCU-2K series or the Thermaltake SonicTower. (Though in the end I went with the SonicTower.)

Not to mention that if you've got a case with air filters, reversing the air flow not only makes them useless, but if you don't remove the filter it can even hinder your exhaust as it fills up with dust. :O Bad bad bad. Of course, if you don't have filters...

Further, I have been providing actually informative information in comparison to your disinformation. you can install the Adblock extension and ad some filter, its really easy.
Tools->extension->get more extension.
On this page AdBlcok is among the first, most popular extension.

You can add all these!

And adBlcok actually supports wildcard so *.vibrantmedia.com / *.intellitext.com would do it!

Other extension I reccomand:
IEView, customize google and mouse gesture!

Well its pretty clever hehe. Usually, the way it works, when there is a DNS request, It first look in the cache to see if it already translated this address, if its not there, then it looks into the HOSTS file, if its not there than it ask your specified DNS if they know the address, then if they dont know it, they go ask the top domains DNS and so on...

So you really stop them at the source wich is rather nice and really fast! And I never got any errors since its like if the intellitext server was not responding so it just doesnt highlight any stuff and the job is done!

I really suggest AdBlock, really nice extension, everytime a ad pops up, there's a little AdBlock tab over it and if you click on it, you can specify to block it! And the use of wildcard stop their other vairants to popup really slick!

Just work for a little company. My job officially is a Software developer, but I'm also in charge of hardware (troubleshooting, speccing new hardware, upgrading/building customer Systems...), Network and Server Administration (Router Configs, Wireless stuff, etc), do quite a bit of support...

Quite varied really. I've been here so long, and have my hand in so many different aspects of the job that I'm almost irreplacable. Certainly the company would suffer badly were I to leave...

Damn my loyal niceness that stops me from saying "And extra £15K, or I go, and you're screwed" to the boss... But then it's not like they pay me badly I guess.
