II am building a Server utilizing an ASUS DSBF-DE Dual LGA 771 Intel 5000P MCH SSI EEB 3.61 Server Motherboard Model #: DSBF-DE Item #: N82E16813131169 purchased from Newegg. The CPU I ordered to go with this motherboard is the Intel Xeon E5320 Clovertown 1.86GHz Socket 771 80W Quad-Core Active or 1U Processor Model BX80563E5320A Model #: BX80563E5320A Item #: N82E16819117115 but unfortunately it is "out of stock".

What would be a good Intel Xeon substitute / upgrade to move up for this “out of stock” CPU, compatible with the motherboard of course, and I am willing to pay a few dollars more. I have ordered the Antec True Power Trio TP3-650 650W ATX12V Power Supply with Three 12V Rails Model #: TP3-650 Item #: N82E16817371001 if that affects your recommendation.

I am considering the Intel Xeon E5410 Harpertown 2.33GHz LGA 771 80W Quad-Core Processor. Would that be a good choice?

Thank you,

Is this server going to be folding full time?

Yup, and glad to do it. My Quad has all ready completed 10 cores before the other two have completed any.

Can't wait till the SMP client is no longer in beta, that or the nvidia gpu client :)

Are they even officially working on a nvidia client? I mean, I hope so, I just haven't heard anything yet..

Aw, I just searched around..looks like the nvidia client will only be for the next generation of cards (GTX280, etc.).

Looks like they claim inaccuracies when using the G80/G92 core as well.. :(

Well that sucks now doesn't it.

*Thinking of a way to afford a new card, entailing the least amount of effort*

BTW My Q6600 has completed 15 WUs before my other machines have completed any, and it' almost done 2 more. LOL What's even funnier is the Quad is running the BIG Advanced WUs and the other two are running the small stuff. I also had to drop my OC to 3.375ghz to insure stability. I would have upped the Vcore instead, but at 100% Load things get pretty hot. With these settings i'm currently at 61,61,54,55 at Full load.

The P4 3.4ghz is at 57%, and the 1.4ghz is at 44% complete on their first Core.

Update:

My Quad has now finished 24 WUs before either of the other two machines have completed 1.

The P4 1.4ghz is at 69%, and the P4 3.4ghz is at 84% LOL. You'd think the faster P4 would at least have finished a couple by now. Especially since they're not the BIG WUs like my Quad is doing.

Yea the new quads pump out WU's like nobodies buisness, but they do run a bit hot.

Used to F@H, but has lost touch. I will be getting back to F@H when they release the F@H client for nVidia GPUs, which should pwn PS3/CPUs. :sol:

Yeah i decided to stop Folding on my quad, at least for the time being. I'm having a bit of a Northbridge heat thing goin' on, so i keeping heavy cpu load to a minimum. If i remember to i'll fire it up on a cooler day though.

T8300 = Intel Core2 Duo T8300 2.4GHz 3MB L2 Cache Socket P 35W Dual-Core Processor

Make sure when you set up a laptop, with any client, that you set it to turn off on battery power. Otherwise, your battery won't last very long. So, if you copy and paste your client.cfg file from a desktop to new installs, edit the "battery=no" to "battery=yes"

It should look something like:

Code :
  1. [settings]
  2. username=cunninglinguist
  3. team=40051
  4. passkey=
  5. asknet=no
  6. machineid=2
  7. bigpackets=yes
  8. local=117
  9. [http]
  10. active=no
  11. host=localhost
  12. port=8080
  13. usereg=no
  14. proxy_name=
  15. proxy_passwd=
  16. [core]
  17. priority=0
  18. cpuusage=100
  19. disableassembly=no
  20. checkpoint=12
  21. ignoredeadlines=no
  22. [power]
  23. battery=yes

To answer your question:

This machine will run the SMP client, if it's plugged in and turned on 24/7. Otherwise, it won't make the deadlines.

If this gets used like a normal laptop, you are probably better off to install two console clients.
Just put the files in different directories ( like FAH/1 and FAH/2) and edit the client.cfg for "machineid=1" to "machineid=2" on one of the files. That way each client runs on a separate core.

One other note on laptops, some of them get real hot. I would keep an eye on a new laptop running full tilt for a couple of days, and especially the first few hours. You don't want it to melt.

Good luck.
Happy Folding.

I've got a PS3 here I might put to work 24/7. I'm just wondering does anyone think this is a bad idea concerning temps etc? My room temp is probably 23C.

EDIT: I also have a quad core Xeon E5440 (2.83GHz) with an nVidia Quadro FX570 here, how would this fare in folding?
