I am planning on buying a new notebook. Let's say that I finally decide to buy a Dell Latitude notebook, using a Pentium M 1.4GHz processor, will I be able later on to upgrade only my CPU to a 1.7GHz CPU for example, or are any upgrades on laptops impossible?

It is possible, just as some notebook manutactors will let you upgrade the video. Still you shouldn´t count on it, unless they tell you that it´s possible. The new notebooks from Alienware (Area-51M) will let you upgrade both video and CPU, but most manufactors won´t! I know HP and Alienware is selling notebooks that´ll make you able to upgrade later on, but with AOpen, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu-Siemens, Medion and Toshiba, it might be possible, but don´t count on it!

I just visited Alienware's website and I was VERY surprised to see that they also ship internationally (I live in Eastern Europe). This way it would be MUCH cheaper for me to buy a notebook from the USA, instead of where I live. Has anyone had any experience with Alienware? Are there are any problems with their products or everything is good ? What's their reputation ?

What's the problem to buy a Pentium M 1.3GHz now when is cheap, and then later on upgrade to a Pentium M 1.7GHz when it will be cheap ?

Not a problem as long as you have an upgradeable socket.

As with a prebuilt 1.7, it will draw more power and reduce battery life. It will also run a bit warmer, which could result in noisier operation as smart fans run faster to compensate.

Do you think that this is an upgrade I can perform myself (by buying the CPU from a store), or should I return the laptop back to where I bought it in order to upgrade the processor?

You can upgrade an upgradable Notebook CPU yourself, simply remove the CPU cover on the back, then the heatsink, then the CPU, put the new one in, and put it back together.

Much of notebook bios out there are specifically configured to the original equipment.
