I'm running PalmOS v.3.3 on a PalmPilot.
When I set an alarm for an event, it rings for a for
short while (maybe 1-1.5 seconds). About 3 beeps.
Is there a way to prolong this to, say, 20 seconds?

Hi, Jim,
I found the options that specifies how many times the reminder
repeats. I didn't even know it repeated until then. So the
fact that each reminder only lasts 1.5 seconds is less of a
liability now.
About the geek sounds, I'm going to hold off doing anything
unconventional with the Palm until I get more familiar with it.
I'm also partial to "boring" alarms that are distinctly noticable
but not distracting. But I'm curious if you ever tried those
sounds before? Do they actually last longer than 1.5 seconds
per reminder?

Been using GeekSounds for years.
I have the theme from the Lone Ranger (full song) for tasks I need to do
alone.
Theme from the A-Team for team meetings.
Reveille for Alarm clock
Mission Impossible for Group meetings
Monty Python for meetings with Human Resources
Star Wars Imperial March meeting with the Boss
No hack manager needed and it has never crashed any of my PDAs

Hope this helps.

I don't seem to be able to choose different themes for different
events. There is only one setting: Datebook->Menu->Options->Preferences.
Are you using the same OS?
The fact that your songs lasts longer than 1.5 seconds is appealing.
(I assume that's what you meant when you mention that the whole Lone
Ranger song was played -- though I'd be concerned about battery life).

I took Jim's advise on this in an earlier thread. Hint: In noisy settings,
pick longer tunes and/or things with higher notes (Funky Town can be heard
better than James Bond's intro notes).

Since Jim's gone and I'm up early, I'll try this one.
Each event can have its own alarm tone. Event, as in a reminder for a Task,
or reminder for Calendar event, etc. When you see the list, there are
several tones. If you add Geek Sounds, you see those, and more. Plus, you
can reverse the process (sort of uninstall).
I put in another sound scheme and wasn't satisfied. When I added Geek
Sounds, I had those, and more. Or I can go back to the original database of
sounds, but there is no need.

Don't fear the GeekSounds. No harm can be done. There is even an
uninstall.pdb in the zipfile that you can hotsync to put you back to
the basic default alarms if you decide you don't like the additional
GeekSounds. <g>

I have Geek Sounds installed, but I can't find a way to set
different alarm sound for different events. I don't see any way in
the settings to do this; I can set a global alarm sound but not
special ones for individual events. Can you describe, step-by-step
as for a not-too-bright child, how to do this? Are you sure there
isn't a hack involved? Or are you using a different application
besides the Datebook?

I forgot to say I use DateBk5 to replace Palms Calendar application,
many more options including each appointment can have a different alarm
sound.
Battery life- You don't have too listen to the whole song, tap the
screen and it stops.

You may want to steer away from *Greek* sounds. j/k
Using my T|E...Let me see...From the main menu, tap Calender. Tap the Menu
thingie (are they called Icons on Palms?) in the lower left side of the
screen, by the Graffiti area. Tap Preferences. There's a triangle by the
"Alarm Sound" area, tap that. When you select different ones, you get a
preview of the sound. Select OK or Cancel.
Select Tasks. Essentially the same as above, selecting Options and then
Preferences. Alarm sounds is at the bottom. I have the theme from Airwolf,
plenty of high notes to get my attention, and a bit longer playing. BTW, you
have to have a "due date" for the task to get the alarm to sound. This is
fun on shopping day, having the alarm go off. 'Scuse me while I whip this
out...

I think you may be encountering a different environment than the
base apps that come with PalmOS v.3.3. The "main" menu seems to
be the "Applications" button, and Menu->Options->Preferences does not
give any sound-setting options. Furthermore, we have a To-Do list
rather than Tasks. Can't seem to set an alarm for To-Do items. As
Jim suggested he did, I suspect many people have moved on to more
embellished replacements for datebook. Thanks for the heads up on
that, anyway.

It's not actually fear of GeekSounds that holds me back, it's lack
of time to get involved in many new things at once (the move to the
PalmPilot is itself kind of a big step). But it is certainly nice
to know that GeekSounds is available and uninstallable. Thanks for
that.
