Hi,please forgive me as I know little about computers,so bare with me. I am looking at buying a laptop and I was in formed that nVidia GPU Geforce 8600m cards had serious problems with overheating,do the 9600m gt also have the same issues? any advice on this and some recommendations on a good laptop 17" and above would would be greatly appreciated appreciated.

They don't have problems overheating, they just can't take heat-cool cycles for an extended period of time.

The 9000 series chips, though, do not have this problem.
