I have a Dell Latitude D610 with XP professional. I have a number of programs e.g. MS Office, Adobe programs, etc. etc. I have 1 GB RAM. Problem is that it can take up to 15 minutes, or more sometimes, to boot up. I know this is a difficult issue without much more info about my laptop. However, does anyone have some gereral solutions/comments re this bootup time?
Check the BIOS (f8 on startup) to make sure quick boot is enabled, the hard drive is the 1st boot device, and there is no hard drive delay set.
Start-->programs-->startup folder-->remove any programs you don't want starting with windows.
When windows is started, look down by your clock. All those icons are programs that started with windows. If there are any you don't want to start, open the program and go to the preferences, and tell them not to start up with windows.
Start-->run-->msconfig-->startup tab-->uncheck any program you don't want starting with windows that you didn't disable already through the above methods.
It is likely you have additional issues - some device driver issues other conflicts.
If you still have problems after following Afford's suggestions, and if you have any usb devices attached, disconnect them and see if it makes much difference.
Check Device Manager and see if all your devices are working correctly. In the main window listing all devices, there will be a yellow question mark or such by any device not working correctly. If no marks they should be OK.
I suggest you go to a site like PCPitStop and let them check your system - you get a free scan and it will report if you have outdated drivers. I suggest getting the latest. It will also show you what programs are running at start and which are required, optional, and which should be closed. You mgiht be surprised at how many programs are running - required and otherwise. It will also check the speed of components. We have been assuming that the problem is all the data being loaded by too many unnecessary programs or bloatware, when it might be caused in part by a slow performning computer. But the PCPitstip reports should reveal if CPU memory or HD are not operating as they should.
Also, have you run a virus scan lately to ensure that is not the issue?
If you work through the above and still have issues, does the computer seem to operate normally once beyond start up or does it seem to lag in programs?
