I am suddenly having a problem with my Nikon Coolpix 8700

When I turn it on it suddenly goes to half zoom and if i push the "Click" button to take a pic it goes to full zoom. i can adjust the menu settings but i cant take pics and they camera is not changing the zoom settings. Also in the display window where it shows my setting (fine, # of pics... it is now only showing "Scene 6" and nothing else. When i click the button to go from camera mode to "Check pictures already taken mode" nothing happens.

I am about to leave for a trip for a month throughout SE Asia and NEED my camera. I am thinking that a setting is wrong or I have accidentally hit a wrong button or something. I am not sure. But I desperate for some advice.
