first laptop - sub 1k

I have never bought a laptop before, so I don't know what to look for. No brand preference.

1 What is your budget?
$1000CDN, preferably as cheap as possible

2 What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
15.4" is fine.

3 What screen resolution do you want?
1280x800/1024?

4 Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Desktop replacement.

5 How much battery life do you need?
It'll be plugged in most of the time.

6 Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games.

7 What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop?
Playing music (external speakers), HD video (xvid), MAME.

8 How much storage (H.D.D Capacity) do you need?
There is no need for a large HDD, even a solid state drive would work just fine. I suppose the more space, the merrier.

10 How long do you want to keep your laptop?
As long as it still boots up

11 If you would like to mention some other things about purchasing your ideal laptop, post them.
S-Video output or similar would be great to have.

13 What country do you live in?
Canada.
