Hi,

I'm planning to get a PC Card SD card adapter for an aging laptop that
doesn't have USB ports. However, the card adapters I found announce
that they support Windows 98SE or higher. I'm using Windows 95. Will
I be able to use one of these things on this computer, or am I forced
to troll EBay for any older models? All I'm doing is transfering
files from computer to SD card. Thanks.

No it won't work.

Here's a long shot for you - it looks to me like it might work but I'm sure
others more knowledgable than me will soon say if I'm talking rubbish.

If the laptop has a parallel port then this drive plugs in that. You'll need
the optional PC Card Type II to MultiMediaCard and SDMC Adapter (listed at
the bottom of the page) so you can plug the SD card in, and they say it
supports Win95.

Only downside, at $269 + $22 for the adaptor, you are better off putting
that towards a new laptop instead.

Cheers, JL

A probably less expensive and simpler option:

http://www.mittoni.com/securedigital/adapter.html

It adapts SD cards to CF (compact flash). Stick this in a CF-to-PCMCIA
adapter and it should work just fine even under Win95. CF is just PCMCIA
with fewer pins, the CF-to-PCMCIA adapter is almost entirely passive, so
it's dirt cheap (~$5 off ebay).

The real magic is in the SD-to-CF part. If it works with digital cameras
as it claims, there shouldn't be any problem with Win95.

To expand on Jim's rather terse and unexplained answer:

Most PC SD or Compact Flash card readers connect to the computer via a USB
port. Windows 95, in spite of Microsoft's claims, does *NOT* support USB.
Oh, sure, a few items can be tricked into working. But it is nowhere near
the simplicity of plugging a USB peripheral into a Windows 98 machine.

So a USB card reader isn't going to function for you.

Even better, why not get a SD/MMC-to-PCMCIA adapter and cut the number of
items needed in half?

http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=HSSDPCADPT

Or even the one from the same site Ray suggested.

Darn! That was I was looking for in the first place! All I found were those
4-n-1 PCMCIA adapters that took lots of other cards other than SD, but those
seem to require Windows 98 or greater. I 'll check these out, since I only
need it for SD cards anyway. Thanks for your replies.

Somehow, I just knew there would be a better option than the one I found.

Oh, there's always a better option than the one you found. It's just that
frequently, it costs twice as much and is currently backordered. ;)

Not even close.
I meant that if the device manufacturer says it won't work with Win95,
it won't work with Win95. The manufacturer knows his product better than
you, me or DC.

Actually, you're entirely correct. But not because my answer is totally
wrong.

The laptop in question is USB-less. So my answer regarding USB card readers
is inapplicable. I should have read the original post TWICE.

What I said is true for USB card readers. But USB isn't an option in this
case.

The driver mean for everything.
You might have problem if the said reader don't provide driver for your
OS.
