Looks ok, not really a fan of the whole Alien thing, but not bad overall. It's overpriced (big surprise there) and it comes with Alienware's support which can be questionable at times. Still has the Dell M1730 beat. :D

I meant on looks, because IMO the Dell is @ss ugly. If I was going to spend that much on a laptop, I think I would just suck it up and get the Clevo D901C. Call me a Clevo/Sager whore, but my laptop has me sold on the company should I ever need to buy a laptop again.

Yeah Desktop CPU + Dual 8800M GTX + 4GB RAM + 3xHDD +1920x1200 res
Its a solid laptop and cheaper than M17x and M1730
if i had the money i would definitely go for a SAGER NP9262 and i would even sell my PC for it because i would get something faster than my current Desktop which has E6600+8800GTX+4GB RAM + 500GB HDD
Sager NP9262 is really a beast

Alienware and Dell can both DIAF as far as I'm concerned. Bad customer support. Overpriced product. My buddy shelled out $2300 for a laptop, the video card literally melted, with liquid coming out if the memory chips. Alienware would not stand behind their product and couldn't give him a good answer as to why it was burning up. They sent him a new videocard, which he installed himself, even though its under waranty. He tried playing some different games, laptop started to over heat, so he quit. Called Alienware back, they will NOT fix his laptop. Laptop is still under warranty, but it used for nothing a web browsing machine as the video card will literally melt if he tries to do anything other than desktop stuff.

Sager 9262 is a far better machine. Just as fast. Better customer support. And probably somewhere around $500 cheaper in cost. Sager also sells a 5793 which is nothing but a non-SLI, non-RAID version of the 9262. Great machine under $2500 with a 3 year warranty.

Hell, I think the Gateway for what, $1500-1600 with the 8800 video card in it, is a better deal than the Alienware or Dell.

People need to stop being sheep.

Kind of hard to pit Alienware vs. Dell, isn't it? They both fall under the same parent companies: Dell.

It's like arguing about a GM truck vs a Chevy truck...pretty much all have the same look, guts and performance when you click the same check boxes.

I bought an Alienware back in 2001. Great machine, great service, not a bad price at all. You got to pick out almost everything back then, even the case. Now all that's changed and I would touch an Alienware, unless it was given to me. I suppose if someone liked the new case style they could pick one up on ebay for a couple hundred dollars and rebuild it. I wouldn't, but someone else might.

I talked to Alienware when I was looking for a laptop. I had some questions regarding the highend notebook they had at the time the 9750 and the response was basically "unless you are willing to shell out some cash, I don't feel like talking to you". Major turn off IMO.

It's nice to see some of the mainstream enthusiasts start to frequent the laptop section now. I like the company :)

Rubix: You can compare them when they are technically still two separate devisions, shelling out the same basic product for a bloated price. The only thing I was comparing the Dell to was in terms of looks. The M1730 is ugly. <-------That's PERIOD. lol

Way overpriced. They charge over $1500 for 8800GTX SLI. Way overcharge on memory and hard drives as well.

Id like to see the manufacturers sack up for a change. Get all these so-called high performance, high dollar notebook producers together once, and then benchmark them against each other. Get a Dell, Alienware, Falcon NW, Hypersonic and any other of these other high dollar laptop companies together. Throw a couple of lower buck laptops with the same specs as the above machines into the mix. Then say "Ready - fight"

I think the boutique machines would be faster, but not $1000 faster. Id rather take a 2% performance hit than get ripped off. Companies like Alienware make their money off of morons with too much money that are too lazy to go ask some questions somewhere.

Keep it up sheep! You further the business of companies like Alienware, Dell and Apple.

Falcon-NW and Hypersonic use Clevo units...they would perform about the same. But they would beat the Dell and Alienware due to lack of bloatware and higher grade parts (better memory, etc). I would love to see Dell and Alienware get their @sses handed to them by a cheaper unit from a lesser known company. I would laugh and laugh and laugh.

Yup, I know the Falcon and Hypersonic laptops are Clevos. The point here would be to show how bad Falcon and Hyper are hosing their customers against say a company like Powernotebooks or Xotic PC that are selling a Sager for $1k less.

Most entertainment notebooks (17'' ones at least) have them. Mine does, my brothers Inspiron 9300 does. They are still laptop speakers though, and generally suck.

Kaldor: I agree that those companies can be rip offs. People buy from them though for the 1) name and 2) purchasing experience and support. Small boutiques tend to have better sales and service compared to larger companies. There are also companies like Killernotebooks, who add mods to the laptops to help them run cooler and better. You just have to ask yourself if it's worth it.

I know you probably know all this, just making my point.

Yup I like to keep up on my hardware. I just wish that people would wise up. But I guess "theres a sucker born every minute" definitely applies.

Im praying that AMD/ATI can pull it together and make a decent mobile chipset. Would drive down the costs of high performance laptop quite a bit. Nvidia has been the king for 3 years now.

actually for an alienware this isnt tat expensive. remember the old sli 7950 gtx with a single core turion cpu costed around $4500. I was looking at the m17x and built it to $3500 (sli 8800gtx, and t9300) didnt buy the extra ram, $150 for a xtra 1gb? no thanks! ill buy 2x2gb from newegg for around $100. The dell xps1730 is also cheap, $3300 (after a $300 off coupon, the 25% off xps was expired.) its still expensive but not like b4, maybe dell figured out that moms are tired of paying $4k+ for a laptop for their spoiled brat kids. I just saw sager and tats a bit expensive too, but it can carry a q6600.

gaming laptops are the biggest rip off ever you pay 5 grand and get ramd up the butt by alienware then you have 20min battery life and overheating problems. whats the point of a gaming laptop if you can only use it 20min unplugged

Reply to cal8949

Not all of them are 20min for example M15x has a very good config + good battery life

Or HP HDX (20" ) has a reasonable batter life although its 20"

Battery life isn't all that bad on these high power machines. Most of them are around 2:30. It's not a business-class 5 hours or anything, but it's good enough to watch a movie. And really, think about it, I hardly ever use my laptops without the power supply.

I wish more companies would do this. There was a guy from Dell that was on here for a while, but he seems to have vanished. XFX is the only other one I know of here. It's kinda like newegg allowing companies to post feedback on user reviews. Shows that they actually care about their customers problems.

Will shoot you an email tonite Steve. State of WI gets a little ornery when I try to use webmail at work and our enterprise anti-spam is stopping 1500+ spam an hour, so no giving out my state address. I will also contact my friend about this. Havent talked with him in awhile. Last I heard he said he was going to dump it on Ebay and build a desktop. If thats the case, I dont think he really cares anymore, but the person he sold it to may care. And Im sure he would like an explanation why the 8700 GT mobile literally melted so bad he had liquid on the memory chips when he pulled the videocard. I wont go into anymore detail here on these forums and will contact you this evening via email. Will also direct my friend to this thread and have him get ahold of you. But like I said, he may not give a crap anymore.

I will give thumbs up for at least trolling the forums and working at getting the problem fixed. Companies need to pay attention to their image a little more.

Well thought Id throw an update out there a sec. Steve may be bogus or Alienware really doesnt care. I figured as much. They may have seen the host of problems my buddy was having and decided that it was simply easier to ignore than take responsibility for a faulty product.

Reply to Kaldor

Sucks to hear that, though it seems to fit with quite a few comments about Alienware's customer service. Too bad, considering Alienware used to be at the forefront of the gaming PC sector.

the best way you should shell out to buy whatever laptop has been good heat-relieving system, alot of issues come from heating. Alianware use 2 heatsink for 2 video cards, its too closer with botom door but bottom door has no large gap to heat go out, alot of customer mail in for this problem, it make your video card die soon if u got a recycle card :D

another issue with M9750 was rebooted by itself or couldnot boot and you are not able to know what going on :D, can u guess it?

on the whole ( i dont deal with prices :) ) it's realy strong and fully power almost same with desktop that same specs, 2 harddrive run on raid ( double or 2 double speed to access data) and ect...i'v checked the whole unit, good speed, worth to try :)

4GB DDR2 800 RAM(although this doesnt make a difference but M17x and M1730 both have 667 )

I have bought a maxxed out Alienware M17x, nearly £4000.00 paid three weeks into the system and this is the result, it has major problems and flaws, and Alienware/Dell have confirmed this machine is not all powerfull as it is advertised or made to be or at least at this moment in time it is not, not sure why they are selling it as I am on the verge of wanting to return it for either a proper working replacement or a full refund.

My system has the Vista 64bit, Dual Geforce 280M cards, QX9300 Quad Core 2 Extreme 2.53ghz , 1TB 7200rpm HDD in Raid & 1200p resolution on the screen with 4GB DDR3 ram (opted for 4 rather than 8GB at the moment, as I intended to wait for prices to drop, everything else maxxed out with all options).

Problems so far : (Which Alienware/Dell have acknowledged as follows)

1. Dual Geforce 280M graphics cards do not work properly in SLI mode appears to be a driver issue and fault, the onboard integrated card kicks in when in boost mode with one of the Geforce 280M cards hitting 70C + on temperature, whilst the second 280M sits idle at 35-45C. My benchmarks graphics test cannot hit more than 8-9 fps under DirectX9, forget DirectX10 benchmarking so far cannot get the system to do anything properly in DX10 mode just a blank screen, although when running dxdiag.exe the system reports upto date with DirectX10. Microsoft FSX cannot achieve more than 5-9 fps in boost SLI mode when maxxed out on settings (see other users on You Tube with similar maxxed out settings on other systems with Ati Crossfire and or desktop systems using the same Geforce 280/295 graphics cards in SLI mode). According to the norm with the setup working properly, one should be able to achieve at least 25-30 fps easily with capacity to hit the 60's with further testing and tweaks.

2. The quad core 2 extreme QX9300 chip tends to push all the workload onto one core running at 80+% again temps hitting the 70C's whilst the other three sit at 15% workload and temps of 35-45C. There is some flaw which is causing this and it is pointless having all this power and not being able to utilise it properly.

3. HDD, due to having carried out some changes i.e. disable GPU's in BIOS under Alienware instructions to alter the hybrid SLI mode so that one can manually control the save and boost modes i.e. integrated GPU and Dual Geforce 280M mode, the machine began to suffer blue screen crashes, after having gone through approximately 20 odd crashes I reverted back to the enable GPU's in bios settings. The HDD's since are knocking so loud that one can hear it across a noisy room. I believe the crashes have damaged one or both of the hard drives somehow and in order to reduce the sound, I had to go into Vista settings and disable "Superfetch", this reduced the knocking sound but as soon as the hard drive is accessed the knocking is there, again not sure how long this will carry on for before a failure occurs.

4. Alienware/Dell at this moment in time are working on the solutions but do not have one to give to customers so for those like me having paid out a fortune for something that is supposed to be the most powerful laptop in the world are left with a machine that just is the most expensive desktop led lightshow on earth, that is fact, I can give them that credit. At least I have managed to get it to flow slowly through all the rainbow colours across the lit keyboard. 4 weeks in and I have not been able to use the machine at all as intended apart from surf the web looking for solutions. I dont think the Alienware reps know what to say and so far no one can advise what status I hold, I may have to complain to the Credit Card company to seek some form of compensation, either I have been sent a dud of a machine or Alienware/Dell need to let the consumers know the reality.

Anyone wanting to know more, I am more than happy to comment and take things further specially if there are other M17X purchasers out there. Just my input to add to all the hype around this machine which I admit I fell for...................

I'm thinking of purchasing an Alienware M17x with
PROCESSOR Intel® Core™2 Duo P8600 2.4GHz (3MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
OPERATING SYSTEM Windows Vista Home Premium (64 bit) + Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Coupon
VIDEO CARD Single NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 260M, 1GB
LCD PANEL 17-inch WideXGA+ 1440x900 (900p)
MEMORY 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz
HARD DRIVE 1TB - 2x 500GB 7,200RPM - RAID 0
INTERNAL OPTICAL DRIVE Slot-Load Dual Layer Blu-ray Combo (BR-ROM, DVD+-RW, CD-RW)

Does it sound like I'll have very many problems. I figured since you guys are talking about fully overclocked pc's, i'd ask if you believed the same problems would carry over for something a little less powerful.
