I am looking for recommendations for laptop coolers. I have read through several reviews on newegg and bestbuy's website but I do not like what I am seeing.

 

Several reviews with low ratings and people saying that one of the fans have already gone out on their unit. I am confused now on which unit is really worth paying for. I am looking to pay up to $80 for a cooler.

 

The laptop that I have is the Gateway FX P-7805u. Thanks.

Looks like one of the view that has good reviews. I'm surprised that I didn't get a reply to this. I would have thought there would have been plenty of people who use this forum that have laptop coolers.

Well you posted it in the General Mobile Computing forum, you might now notice it gets about 1/10 th posts and 1/50th the traffic of the Laptop section. That likely would've garnered more posts, but if people don't have experience they don't tend to just google / newegg and answer for you, especially if fan failure is an issue.

My DIY StarTech throw-together is still working fine, but if it didn't I'd just get a new StarTech fan or Hub to replace it.

Sorry I'm new to the forum and was unaware of the traffic. Some forums are very strict on where you place your posts. I was trying to be as specific to topic as possible.

Hey,

I think $80 is a lot to pay for a laptop cooler. I've been using the X-pad (http://xpad4laptop.com/) for months and my 3 year old Acer Aspire is running great. The X-pad doesn't use fans at all, making it energy efficient and leaving a USB port available on your laptop. It's patented design allows for heat to escape efficiently, cooling your laptop considerably. It also acts as a heatshield.

I have two suggestions:


1. Antec cooler, it's made for 15.4" laptops. I used it on my 17" HP and it worked very nicely. You can get it on Amazon for $28

2. Cryo LX, This giant cooler has 3 fans compared to 2 in the Antec one. This can fit up to 19" laptop. I just got it recently and my 17" sits on it with plenty of room to spare. It also has a USB hub on the back. I tested this comparing to the Antec and results were very similar. But the Cryo LX has much bigger potential because it runs on 3 120mm fans, these fans can be powered by 12v for a much faster speed. (you will need to buy a separate adapter thingy to power it, the USB hub only gives 5v of power. The fans will spin more than twice as fast but will be louder too). This one is priced at $70 on amazon. but you can probably get it cheaper on ebay. Cryo LX can also be modded easily to replace+clean the fans because it uses traditional 120mm fans found in desktops. The Antec cooler is very hard to open.

So in conclusion... If you are just looking for a cheap simple cooler that gets the job done, then go for the Antec. Or if you want an extreme cooler with plenty of upgrades, then go for the Cryo LX
