Google Inc. is set to offer its free Android mobile-phone operating system for computers, opening a new front in its rivalry with Microsoft Corp. by challenging the dominance of the company’s Windows software.

Acer Inc., the world’s second-largest laptop maker, will release a low-cost notebook powered by Android next quarter, Jim Wong, head of information-technology products at the Taipei- based company, said yesterday. Asustek Computer Inc., pioneer of the sub-$500 laptops known as netbooks, also has developed a model that runs on Google’s software, Chairman Jonney Shih said.

I wonder how Microsoft will respond? (Source)

They probably push Windows 7 Starter Edition even more? Also, IMO, Android's still a beta OS; they'll need to fix it up a bit for laptop use, which again gives MS more time to adapt.

Probably kind of late to add on to this post but I recently read about that new OS they were making. Cant exactly remember what it was called right now and I'm a little lazy to go check. But I read that it had partially Android and partially its own new stuff. They are trying to make it more like a linux system I believe with not necessarily high end performance but more speed and reliability. A big part of it is aiming towards the netbooks I think.

You are probably talking about Chrome OS. To me it sounds like it is basically Google Chrome web browser as a shell over the linux kernel. Frankly it doesn't sound too exciting aside from it may make drivers and software more available for Linux, that is if it becomes popular.

I am lover of linux. Given a choice i would use linux to any machine. I have felt the freedom always in there. But i wonder if the android will make dent to the windows market.

The primary market for google os would be netbooks. But i wonder how big is this market when compared to pc and laptops
