At work I was asked if i could make a PC that ppl would be restricted to one program. Keep them out of the control panel, media player, internet.---everything would be off limets!
I guess so???
Its for security gate officers. I think that there has to be something better then a PC used as a Rolodex. Some new note pad etc....
WE want these ppl to have access to all 178 residents, which will have info on who can just come right in (friends and relatives etc...) , who has to be called in first, deliveries ETC,,,
Taking a PC and making its users have all kinds of restrictions, attributes, seems like overkill?
What would be most efficient?
thanks a mill, I appreciate it.

To give you an idea of what I am talking about;
A guard sits in a little box of a guard house. They have a phone and a stack of papers, with resident info, and a Rolodex to go by. A person pulls up to gate, "I am her to see bill gates", guard has to ask name. "Hey whats your name?"
"Steve Jobs", he replies.
Guard looks in paperwork and sees no Steve Jobs. "Sorry bud, ya gotta go, hit da bricks.

Or he calls Bill, and asks if Steve can come in? If he is nice, Bill says.
In comes Steve.

I'm sure you get a picture. So maybe there is a machine that will hold all the names and phone numbers etc...
Maybe is hooked to phone so guard can call the resident right up ans ask.
Again, any help I am great full for.
Brian

Having worked 'Access Control' during my early student years, I'd say your answer is pretty simple. Get them a DAMN OLD PC/Laptop that's a 286 and run very primitive software on it with allther database info, but on a 40-100MB, yes that's MEGAbyte drive with like a few megs of RAM. It should give you all the information you want using a dBase program or early spreadsheet program, but make surfing impossible, and restrict internet use to something like Gopher, FTP, and e-mail and usenet. No worries about USB ports, nor worries about possible bootable CDs, there's nothing anyone could do with these anyways.

IMO that's the easiest way to accomplish your task with limited investment, easy replacement costs, and maximum effect.

Don't bother integrating the phone it's an un-needed next step, don't overcomplicate or over-analyze it.

BTW, send your check or money order for my fee to charity. :hello:

PS, I would also suggest posting your question in the Homebuilt section if you want more suggestions, although of course I think my answer is the perfect solution. :sol:

Hey, so do I. Simplicity at its best!!!!!
I actually happen to have a couple older PC's. Even a 386, though that may be to old. But I think your idea will work out fine, and I don't have to worry about the PC itself.
Thanks. Its appreciated.

Glad the info was helpful. It's fun when the 'unusual' seemingly backwards thinking solution really does fit the bill, and it just so happens this is one of those rare occasions.

Good Luck, eh !!
