I don't know how common a feature this is, but I have a Sanyo phone from Sprint that can accept a lockout code remotely. If my phone gets stolen, all I have to do is text my lock code to it, and it will lock the phone out, rendering it useless to the thief. The code must be typed in again from the handset itself to unlock it. Pretty handy, I think. But it's so obscure that I wouldn't have known about it had I not read the manual.

I figured it out by exploring the phone itself, as every user should. Then you don't have to ask so many questions, or look in the manual to find out where the alarm clock is ;)

I just put a lock code on startup. That way, if the thief/person who finds the phone turns it off thinking it's going to ring or GPS will track them, they just basically locked the phone on themselves. Also, some phones, like the krzr, has a feature that enables you to lock text messages, and I'm sure other things too.

Granted I don't want anyone to be able to use my now stolen phone. But I think the point is moot because most thieves would just smash the damn thing if they can't unlock or use it.

Theft sucks but I think putting a msg about a reward in the thing is a good idea because you might just get it back. I would think that the current service provider would blacklist it anyway.
